Football: 'Brilliant' Reds have belief

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp has described Liverpool as the best team he has taken to a Cup final and believes defeat in Kiev last May focused their mindset on winning this season's Champions League.
The Reds are aiming to become champions of Europe for a sixth time - and their manager to break a sequence of six consecutive final defeats - when they face Tottenham in Madrid on Saturday.
Klopp insists his team are completely different from the one that endured a painful 3-1 defeat in last season's final against Real Madrid, when he claimed Liverpool were happy to simply surpass expectations and reach the Ukraine capital.
Now, the German maintains, his team will be satisfied only with lifting the first trophy of his Anfield reign. And he has the best opportunity to end that wait on Saturday, given the quality and character at his disposal.
"I don't like to blame my other teams. I love them all. They all gave everything, but I have never been part of a final with a better team than this," the 51-year-old told a news conference on Tuesday.
"Our boys mixed our potential with attitude in the best way I have witnessed. That is brilliant, exceptional, and it brought us to where we are. I would say nobody believed more in this team than the team themselves.
"That is why we are here."

REDEMPTION BECKONS
Every team that lose a final think they will put it right. It's like a medicine that tastes disgusting. But it helps you. It can reinvigorate you.
JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, believes his side have reacted positively after falling at the final hurdle last season.

AN EXCEPTIONAL SQUAD
I don't like to blame my other teams. I love them all. They all gave everything, but I have never been part of a final with a better team than this.
KLOPP, bullish about ending his poor record of six straight Cup final losses with Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund.

Klopp has lost all three finals he has reached with Liverpool, in Europe and domestically, and he also tasted defeat in two German Cups and a Champions League final with his previous Bundesliga team Borussia Dortmund.
He noticed a determination to put things right after the loss to Real as soon as the players resumed pre-season training last summer.
"It had a big influence on us," he said. "When we stood in the queue in the airport in Kiev on the way home, all in tracksuits, heads down, disappointed, there were a lot of different emotions. But the plan was, we come again. Now we are there, that is just incredible.
"I think every team that lose a final think they will put it right. It's like a medicine that tastes disgusting. But it helps you. It can reinvigorate you.
"You can use it as extra motivation and that's exactly what we did. If you look at it now, it's not a bad thing that we lost the final last year.
"It was the kick-start for the development of this team. From the first day of pre-season when we were all together, it was a big step for the boys. This team is not even to be compared with the team of last year. Last year, we wanted to be in Kiev. This year, we wanted to win it wherever the final is. There's a big difference just in our mindset."
The Liverpool boss confirmed Naby Keita will miss the final with the groin injury he suffered during the second leg of the semi-final at Barcelona while Roberto Firmino, who missed Liverpool's past three matches because of a muscle problem, is on course to play.
Klopp, who is aware that Spurs are no pushovers, also admitted that a Champions League triumph would rank as the highlight of his career.
"We know it's difficult, Tottenham knows it's difficult, so let's play a game and win it," he said.
"The biggest moment of my career was getting promoted with Mainz in 2004. But winning the Champions League with Liverpool? That would make me think of something new."

Ten Hag proud despite 'cruel' defeat

AMSTERDAM • Praises have flowed for the Ajax academy graduates, who have stayed true to the "total football" philosophy espoused by Johan Cruyff in their rousing run from the qualifiers to the final four of the Champions League.
However, after failing to end a 24-year European Cup drought on Wednesday, the reality dawned on coach Erik ten Hag and his players that his team will now inevitably be broken up in the summer.
The Dutch league leaders were undone 3-2 on the night by a Lucas Moura hat-trick, including his added-time goal that punched Tottenham's ticket to the final on away goals despite the tie ending 3-3.
This season, Ajax have been a butterfly team, here for one glorious summer, but whose wings are already beginning to disintegrate a little in the sunlight.
Yet ten Hag found consolation in their "fantastic" European campaign despite the heartbreaking nature of their semi-final exit.
He said: "Football can be very beautiful and it can be very cruel. We have had to experience that today. We were one second away from the final and for that, our team deserves a very big compliment. I'm very proud of my players."
Despite his pride, he rued the golden opportunity that slipped through their fingers, after goals from Matthijs de Ligt and Hakim Ziyech gave them a commanding 3-0 aggregate lead.
The Dutchman added: "If you're 2-0 up, you have to make sure you win and we failed to do that. In the first phase after half-time, we lost our grip on the game, they played a more opportunistic game.
"At 2-2, we dominated again and we created chances. It's very bitter that none of those went in and they scored a very fortunate goal in the last seconds, maybe even past what should have been the last second."
De Ligt heads a list of names that will likely be sold, including Ziyech, who hit the post; David Neres, who was injured during the warm-up; and Donny van de Beek, the first-leg match-winner. Frenkie de Jong has already agreed a blockbuster move to Barcelona.
While captain-defender de Ligt, 19, admitted he "did not know how to recover from this" and that it was "a dream that went bad", he told Dutch TV channel Veronica that Ajax were still going to fight for a domestic double.
The Dutch Cup winners lead the Eredivisie on goal difference from PSV Eindhoven with two matches left.

Football: Klopp confirms Firmino fitness for Champions League final

MADRID (AFP) - Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino is fit for Saturday's Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur despite missing the end of the Premier League season, manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed on Friday (May 31).
"From his point of view, yes, he is ready," Klopp said at a press conference in Madrid on Friday, just before his squad, with Firmino, trained on the pitch at the Metropolitano Stadium.
However, Klopp refused to say whether Firmino - who has been struggling with a groin problem - would start, joking that he would only do so if Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed his line-up.
"If Poch afterwards says the exact line-up then call me, then you will know. If not, I thought I'd keep at least a few question marks open."
Klopp added: "He is fit, he has trained, you will see him later, he is here, and if nothing happens from the moment when he left the plane to now, then he should be fine."
The Brazilian did not feature in Liverpool's last three matches and before that only came on as a late substitute in their 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the first leg of the semi-final.

Football: Vietnam beat Malaysia at home to claim AFF Suzuki Cup for the second time

Football: Vietnam beat Malaysia at home to claim AFF Suzuki Cup for the second time

HANOI (AFP/BERNAMA) - Malaysia coach Tan Cheng Hoe admitted that the early goal by Vietnam in the second leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup final on Saturday (Dec 15) "destroyed" all his plans for the game against Vietnam.
That goal by Nguyen Anh Duc proved decisive as Vietnam beat Malaysia 1-0 at My Dinh National Stadium to lift the Asean Football Federation trophy for the second time.
The Vietnamese had allowed a two-goal lead to slip in a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Kuala Lumpur last Tuesday.
But Vietnam were determined to press home their home advantage early on and Duc restored their advantage when he volleyed home from close range after only six minutes.
However, they had to survive several scares as goalkeeper Dang Van Lam made a series of fine saves to preserve Vietnam's lead, with Park Hang-seo's men winning 3-2 on aggregate to claim the Asean regional title for the first time since 2008.
Vietnam had the benefit of two away goals from the first leg and they made an excellent start in Hanoi, taking the lead when Nguyen Quang Hai's chip from the left found Duc, whose volley was too powerful for goalkeeper Farizal Marlias to keep out of his net.
Mohamadou Sumareh went close to levelling for Harimau Malaya in the 11th minute with a clever back-heel which went narrowly wide.
Do Hung Dung should have done better for Vietnam in the 33rd minute after he received the ball unmarked on the edge of the box, only to shoot wide.
The hosts had to be indebted to a stellar display from Lam, who was called into action just before half-time to tip Syahmi Safari's first-time effort over his crossbar.
He showed fine reflexes again after the break to claw Sumareh's header away to safety, before making another fine save to keep out Safawi Rasid's free kick.
Ten players - six Vietnamese and four Malaysians - were booked in the scrappy encounter, which culminated in the dismissal of Shahrul Saad in added time when he received his second yellow card after committing a foul on the halfway line to snuff out a counter-attack.
Hai, who scored three goals and was an ever-present for Vietnam in the tournament, was named the Most Valuable Player as Malaysia's dream of their second title since 2010 ended.
Tan, in his post-match press conference, said letting in early goals against Vietnam in three encounters against them in the AFF Suzuki Cup campaign this time around was something which should not have happened.
"Indeed, I am aware that the three times we met Vietnam, we let in an early goal. When it happened tonight, it affected the players' confidence. In the previous match (on Dec 11), we did a comeback, but this time, the players could not score and some scoring opportunities went begging."

Guardiola puzzled why VAR not in use at Swansea

Guardiola puzzled why VAR not in use at Swansea
LONDON • Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he could not understand why Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology was not used at Swansea City after controversial decisions had aided his side's 3-2 FA Cup quarter-final win on Saturday.
City came back from two goals down at the Liberty Stadium to book a semi-final spot for the second time in three seasons and keep alive their hopes of an unprecedented quadruple in English football.
Championship side Swansea were left aggrieved at the awarding of two late goals to City which almost certainly would not have stood if VAR had been in operation.
First, with 12 minutes left, City were awarded a penalty even though Swansea felt Cameron Carter-Vickers had won the ball in the area rather than fouling Raheem Sterling. Sergio Aguero's spot kick then went in via the post and goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt's feet.
In the 88th minute, there was further controversy as Aguero was in an offside position when he headed home the winner.
Yet there was no VAR to turn to for a review, with the English footballing authorities having ruled that only Cup matches at Premier League grounds would have the video technology available. Guardiola, a keen supporter of VAR, does not agree with this policy.
"I'm sorry it was offside," the Spaniard said. "I don't understand why VAR was not used in this competition at this stage. Hopefully, next season this won't happen."
"The penalty was really lucky, but you need it, especially when you're in four competitions."
Guardiola, though, was full of praise for the character of his side, who came from two goals down to win a game for the first time in all competitions since he took charge of the club.
"We spoke at half-time that we need one goal and, after we score one goal, the rest will be easier," Guardiola added.
"After we scored the goal, we created a lot, a lot of chances, but the spirit and persistence helped us to win the game."
Match-winner Aguero said City's chance of winning the Champions League, Premier League and the FA Cup, to go with the League Cup trophy they lifted last month, was "always possible", but Guardiola again played down the possibility.
"Ask me at the end of April, then I will answer," he added.
"I know for people, it will be a big failure if we do not win three or four titles, but being in a position to do it is a huge success for the club."

Football: Yoshida not worried about his lack of familiarity with the Lions ahead of Solomon Islands friendly

SINGAPORE - With just four training sessions before his first game in charge - an international friendly against the Solomon Islands on Saturday (June 8) - Singapore's new national football coach Tatsuma Yoshida admitted there is "not enough time" to fully implement his ideas and philosophy.
However, the 44-year-old said he is not worried. At the pre-match press conference at Hotel Miramar on Friday, he added: "My guys are working hard, and they have good motivation.
"It is my first game and although it is a friendly, it is important for us to play hard and get a good result."
Despite having limited time with Yoshida before tomorrow's game, Singapore skipper Hariss Harun is already noticing the subtle differences.
The 28-year-old said: "He is more in-depth in terms of the finer details when it comes to supporting our team-mates, and things like the angle of the pass, where to pass and where to move.
"It is not that previous coaches didn't work on these things but we spend more time with the new coach on such details as we try to find options to get out of tight situations we will find ourselves in during games."
World No. 160 Singapore will play the 139th-ranked Solomon Islands on Saturday and 140th-ranked Myanmar on Tuesday at the National Stadium but they also have their eye on maintaining their unbeaten run to secure more ranking points for a better seeding in next month's World Cup qualifying draw.

In the last international football window, the Lions beat Malaysia (168th) 1-0 and held Oman (86th) to a 1-1 draw before losing on penalties.
Hariss said: "We don't know much about the Solomon Islands but we respect the fact they are ranked higher than us.
"That being said, they are not miles away from us. We have done well to play attacking football and score goals recently. We have the players to try and continue on this way and against teams that are around our level, we have to play more positively and score more.
"We are happy to play at the National Stadium and we have to make our homeground advantage count."
But the Solomon Islands - comprising footballers who mostly play for semi-professional teams in their home country or Fiji - will not be sitting ducks, after a three-week training stint in the Netherlands where they played against local amateur sides as preparation for the Pacific Games in July.
Solomon Islands coach Wim Rijsbergen, a two-time World Cup finalist with Holland and former Indonesia coach, said: "We had a good camp and hopefully we can give a good game.
"I can't tell you much (about how we play) but we have worked hard. Hopefully we can see the results against Singapore and there will be a surprise in our favour."
His captain Benjamin Totori added: "I have watched clips of Singapore on YouTube and we know it's going to be a tough game. We beat Chinese Taipei 1-0 in March and Macau 4-1 last year, we are confident we can keep winning in Asia."

It captures Nazri Nasir's management philosophy and what he tried to instil during his short stint in charge of Singapore during March's AirMarine Cup in Malaysia.
The former national captain said: "I fully believe in them. I told them when you're selected to be part of this team, it's because I trust you.
"When they're called on in the game, even if it's just five minutes, I trust that they will give their 100 per cent and when they're given a chance, they will do well."
The Lions, their morale low after failing to qualify for the semi-finals of last November's AFF Suzuki Cup, responded with some creditable performances at the friendly quadrangular tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
They beat the hosts 1-0 and held Oman to a 1-1 draw before losing 5-4 on penalties.
Nazri, 48, who was recently appointed assistant to new national coach Tatsuma Yoshida, said: "They responded to me very well and I always try to win the players' trust, that's the most important thing and it showed during the AirMarine Cup.
"I hope they can continue the momentum and that's where I come in also to motivate the players.
"That was a good experience for me to get to know the players better. Now, I can help him (Yoshida) get to know them as well by sharing their mentality, strengths and weaknesses.
"With his coaching ideas and me as I can interact with players easily and understand them better, these will blend together to build a good chemistry in the team."

He and Yoshida face their first test as a partnership in the coming days. The Republic, ranked 160th, face the Solomon Islands (world No. 139) and Myanmar (140) on Saturday (June 8) and next Tuesday (June 11).
The upcoming friendlies at the National Stadium were arranged to help Singapore gain crucial Fifa ranking points for a potentially better draw in July for the World Cup qualifiers.
Singapore captain Hariss Harun said Nazri, who skippered the Lions to victory at the 1998 AFF Championship, is an important presence in the national set-up.
Hariss noted:"His role will be very crucial as the middleman between players and coaches. He also has a lot of experience to impart and with Yoshida's time in Japan with various clubs (Kashiwa Reysol, Albirex Niigata and Ventforet Kofu), we need to adapt as fast as we can.
"Our results at the AirMarine Cup gave us a lot of confidence so we just have to try to continue that momentum. We have a new coach too so the boys are eager to show what we have and I hope this will translate to a good performance in the coming games."
After Nazri retired in 2008, he joined his former club Tampines Rovers as general manager and was later an assistant coach for the now-defunct LionsXII and Young Lions.
He said: "Yoshida brings different ideas and playing styles. He's very detailed and requires high intensity.
"He wants to bring Singapore to a higher level and with his guidance and my local experience, I'm sure we can help the team improve. "

Football: Messi uncertainty does not affect Madrid 'Clasico' plans, says Solari

MADRID (REUTERS) - Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari hopes Barcelona captain Lionel Messi is fit to face his side in Wednesday's Copa del Rey semi-final first leg for the good of the game - but he added that the Argentine's presence would not affect his game plan.
It is unclear whether Messi, the all-time top scorer in Spanish football as well as in the 'Clasico', will be fit for the game after ending Barca's 2-2 draw with Valencia on Saturday with a knock. His club have not given an injury update on him.
"It's always good when the best players get to play every game, but whether or not he plays will not influence the way we prepare for the game at all," Solari told a news conference on Tuesday (Feb 5).
Messi was out with a broken arm the last time Spain's two biggest clubs met, back in October. But Barca barely missed their talismanic forward, thrashing Real 5-1 in what proved to be Julen Lopetegui's last game in charge before Solari took over.
Real, who are third in the La Liga standings but cut their gap behind leaders Barca to eight points after beating Alaves on Sunday, are looking to end Barcelona's run of four consecutive Copa del Rey triumphs and reach the final of the competition for the first time since 2014, when they beat the Catalans 2-1.
Barca's French forward Ousmane Dembele is unlikely to be fit for the game, as he is still recovering from a hamstring injury.
Solari meanwhile has practically a full squad at his disposal, with only little-used defender Jesus Vallejo unavailable.

"It's harder to pick a team when everyone is available, but the important thing is that every player puts their talent, ability and effort at the service of the team," added the coach.

Football: Guardiola tips City as comeback 'heroes'

LONDON • Pep Guardiola believes his Manchester City "heroes" have what it takes to turn things around after two straight English Premier League defeats.
"If you believe I will doubt my players, you are completely wrong," the manager said at a press conference ahead of today's league trip to Southampton. "They are incredible. I never point the finger at one person, never.
"They are heroes for me, nothing is going to change.
"We need to analyse what we have done good and bad and analyse more (going) forward."
The 47-year-old faces a testing week that could prove crucial in arresting his team's slump and reviving the defence of their title. Lose to the Saints today and third-placed City, with 44 points, could face a double-digit gap after hosting leaders Liverpool on Thursday.
Guardiola, however, believes that his men will rediscover their confidence once they start winning.
"We are not in good form and winning will help us a lot. (It) will not come from above. It will come if we do something and that's what we have to try to do.

MOVING AHEAD
I will help them and to help each other and we will come back (to) who we are. We will move forward. I live more in the future.
PEP GUARDIOLA, Manchester City manager, believing that his men will rediscover their confidence once they get back to winning matches again.

"We have belief, whether we are in a winning situation or a losing one. It is a big challenge for me, I wouldn't say I like the situation but I know it's common in football and I like to handle it.
"I will help them and to help each other and we will come back (to) who we are. We will move forward. I live more in the future."
City's sudden collapse, with three defeats in their last four league games, has been blamed mainly on the absence of injured holding midfielder Fernandinho, the continued injury problems of left-back Benjamin Mendy and the recent loss of form of right-back Kyle Walker.
All of which begs the question as to whether the club will invest in the transfer window next month.

Guardiola has always insisted he will do no business in this window, waiting until the summer to strengthen a squad that, until the current run, looked deep enough to cope with any number of injuries or loss of form.
"When we created the squad at the beginning of the season, it was not to go to the January window except if we have problems," the Spaniard said last month.
Now, City appear to have "problems" and there is a distinct possibility that they will move to stem the current "crisis" by signing either midfield cover or a new left-back.
The latest rumour yesterday was that they have already inquired about Atletico Madrid holding midfielder Thomas Partey.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who will captain Southampton today and who played under Guardiola at Bayern Munich, feels that his former boss' obsessive attention to detail is a double-edged sword. It has brought much success but could also be the reason why the champions have suffered a slump.
The 23-year-old Danish midfielder, who joined the Saints in 2016, admires Guardiola but thinks sometimes his analysing of a match is too intense even for the Spaniard.
"He is the most demanding person, not only coach, that I have ever met," Hojbjerg said.
"We sit on the bus after we have won and he sits on the bus watching the game and then he is in his office with two laptops and a television (set) and he is analysing.
"Maybe that's what makes him the greatest. But also maybe that is what makes him lose, because it is too much, he drowns."

Stubborn Sarri unruffled as Blues flop again

LONDON • Maurizio Sarri insists he is not worried about being sacked as Chelsea manager despite his side's lacklustre 2-0 FA Cup fifth-round loss to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Monday.
He endured chants of "You don't know what you're doing" and "You're getting sacked in the morning", as Chelsea fans showed their frustration at the club's fifth defeat in their last 10 games.
Two first-half goals from Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba sealed victory for United as the Cup holders failed to muster a shot on target after the 11th minute, despite having 67 per cent of possession in total.
Asked if he was worried about his job, Sarri said: "It's not my problem.
"I was only worried about my position when I was in League 2 in Italy, not now. I am worried about the results, not about the fans.
"I can understand our fans, because the result wasn't really good. We are out of the FA Cup."
It was the Italian's refusal to change his tactics, even to countenance a Plan B, that angered the Chelsea faithful.
Plan A certainly did not work. His substitutions were like for like, Willian for Pedro, Ross Barkley for Mateo Kovacic, Davide Zappacosta for Cesar Azpilicueta, when he could have sent on Callum Hudson-Odoi for additional firepower.
There was no urgency in their play, no variety beyond long passes from David Luiz, and Jorginho was again a problem rather than a solution as a holding midfielder.

UNCONCERNED
I was only worried about my position when I was in League 2 in Italy, not now. I am worried about the results, not about the fans.
MAURIZIO SARRI, Chelsea manager, brushing off supporters' calls for his dismissal amid an awful run.

The contrast with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was quite the opposite. The Norwegian has morphed from being United's caretaker boss to a manager with a strong attacking philosophy of his own. Crucially, it is an adaptable philosophy.
Missing the injured forwards Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard, Solskjaer played Juan Mata at the tip of a midfield diamond, Herrera and Pogba tucked in with Nemanja Matic holding.
It was similar to their shape that worked so well in the 1-0 Premier League win over Tottenham at Wembley last month.
Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford started up front and the changed formation set the tone for United's more incisive attacking.
Sarri believes his situation will be improved significantly if Chelsea can string together a winning run.
"It's really very easy. If we are able to win three or four matches in a row, it will be easy," he said.
Solskjaer, meanwhile, has urged his men to build on their win and go all the way.
"We want to get to the final," he said. "It'll be a tough away (quarter-final) game against Wolves, but it seems like our fans love the away games with (all) that support behind the goal.

Maurizio Sarri came to Chelsea in the summer with the weight of expectation on his shoulder. The inquest into Maurizio Sarri's reign will be ramped up further over the next few days with Chelsea's top-four hopes having suffered a huge blow. That Gonzalo Higuain failed to open his account for his new side on his Premier League debut, only made things worse.
'Too stubborn' - These Chelsea fans say the same thing about

It will be ironic if Chelsea supporter's stubbornness and unwillingness to embrace change might prove to be the undoing of a manager who is stubborn and unwilling to change. But ultimately whether Sarri gets the time he needs to make this work will, as ever, depend on the patience, or lack of it, from the man at the top; Roman Abramovich.

Last season, Conte was stubborn too. How could you sack Costa for Morata? Again, Bakayoko too was a flop. But he consistently used him. The teams had antidote to his 3 back formation taking advantage of Alonslow but he never changed.

England eased to a 5-1 victory at Montenegro on Monday evening and two Chelsea players in Ross Barkley and Callum Hudson-Odoi were at the heart of it.. Football: Saudi Arabia show title credentials with 4-0 win over 10-man North Korea in Asian Cup opener

DUBAI (AFP) - Three-time winners Saudi Arabia laid down a marker as they ruthlessly dismissed 10-man North Korea at the Asian Cup on Tuesday (Jan 8).
The Saudis, humbled at last year's World Cup in Russia, looked far more at home in neighbouring United Arab Emirates as they tore North Korea apart 4-0 in their opening Group E game.
It was a performance that tagged Saudi Arabia as one of the teams to beat at the continental showpiece along with Iran, who thrashed Yemen 5-0 on Monday.
The Green Falcons attacked relentlessly in the opening stages and Hatan Bahbri put them in front in the 28th minute, turning defender Ri Il Jin inside out and firing into the far corner.
They were 2-0 up nine minutes later when Hussain Almoqahwi's free kick glanced off the outstretched boot of Mohammed Al Fatil and past Ri Myong Guk in the North Korean goal.
North Korea already had a mountain to climb, but their plight worsened just before half-time when Han Kwang Song received his second yellow card for bringing down Almoqahwi.
Salem Al Dawsari made it 3-0 with a smart finish on 69 minutes before Fahad Al Muwallad bagged a soft fourth goal against an exhausted Korean defence three minutes from time.

Football: Hougang United win again, as Brunei DPMM and Tampines Rovers slip up in Singapore Premier League

SINGAPORE - Hougang United enhanced their Singapore Premier League (SPL) title credentials and closed the gap with leaders Brunei DPMM to just two points, with an emphatic 4-2 hammering of last year's champions Albirex Niigata on Wednesday night (April 24).
The Cheetahs were the big winners on a busy evening where four SPL fixtures were played, with DPMM and another title hopeful Tampines Rovers, dropping points.
DPMM were held to a goalless draw by the Young Lions in Bandar Seri Begawan. The Bruneian side still sit atop the SPL with 17 points from seven games.
Tampines, meanwhile, dropped points in their fourth consecutive SPL match, after drawing 1-1 with struggling Warriors FC at the Jurong East Stadium.
A first-half brace by forward Faris Ramli set the tone for Hougang at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
The 26-year-old opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a clinical finish, before stealing in behind the Albirex defence and coolly slotting home his second in the 29th minute.
A first league goal for rookie midfielder Nikesh Singh in the 56th minute then extended Hougang's lead, before Daizo Horikoshi pulled one back for Albirex in the 68th minute.
But any hope of a White Swans comeback was extinguished just two minutes later, when Shahfiq Ghani restored Hougang's three-goal advantage after finishing off a counter-attack.
An injury-time goal by Yoshikatsu Hiraga was scant consolation for Albirex, who have lost twice in the league this season. The Japanese team went undefeated last term en route to a third straight league championship.
A new SPL rule has meant that for this term, Albirex have to sign at least four Singaporean players, with at least two of them starting and playing the entire first half.
At Jurong East, Warriors picked up their first point of the season after holding Tampines to a 1-1 draw.
Tampines had taken the lead in the 23rd minute through Shahdan Sulaiman's superb freekick, only to be pegged back after Sahil Suhaimi pounced on a goalkeeping mistake to equalise for Warriors, who had lost their first five games of the season.
Tampines, touted as one of the favourites for the title this season, have now drawn three and lost one of their last four SPL games, after winning their first three.
And at the Bishan Stadium, Home United interim coach Noh Rahman got off to a winning start as his side beat Geylang International 3-0.
Australian striker Oliver Puflett scored twice, in the ninth and 42nd minutes, before Adam Swandi turned home the ball from close range in the 58th minute to cap a comfortable victory.
Geylang's Dutch midfielder Barry Maguire was shown the red card in the 82nd minute for a high tackle on Home skipper Izzdin Shafiq, who also curiously received his marching orders two minutes later, after a lengthy conversation with the referee.

There is a saying in football - "it's the hope that kills you" - but it certainly did not apply to the 300 Liverpool fans packed into the Jubilee Ballroom at Four Points by Sheraton Singapore as they prayed for a miracle.
They left at the end of the night not with the Premier League title they desperately craved but with renewed optimism that their team have what it takes to get it done next season.
Alan Chng, 45, secretary of the official Liverpool Supporters Club in Singapore, said: "No doubt, we're disappointed, but we're also encouraged by the good results we've got this season. With a charismatic manager (Jurgen Klopp) at the helm and, with supportive owners and the fans behind the team, we'll move on from this."
Before kick-off, the Reds fans knew everything depended on Manchester City's result at Brighton. No wonder a few had one eye on the large LED screens broadcasting their game against Wolves, and another on their smartphones keeping tabs on City's match.
And, for 21 minutes last night, that unlikely scenario played out.
The ballroom erupted when Sadio Mane put Liverpool in front and an even more raucous celebration followed when news trickled in that Glenn Murray had given Brighton the lead. "Blow the whistle now ref!", bellowed a Liverpool fan at the back of the room.
Laughter almost immediately gave way to groans after Sergio Aguero's equaliser, followed soon after by Aymeric Laporte's header which put City 2-1 ahead.
Over at the Thunderbird Bistro along Robertson Walk, about 30 City fans went through a gamut of emotions themselves, particularly in the first half.
Equity sales senior vice-president Vincent Ang, 55, who has supported the Citizens since 1977, said: "The match was nerve-wracking but I was confident. It's a new order and City will dominate for many more years to come, we have an awesome team."

This was City's fourth league title in eight seasons and Manchester native Dave Reade, 37, said the tables have turned on their fierce rivals Manchester United. The tennis coach led most of the chants last night and added: "Once you start supporting a team, you don't stop. There's no changing teams."
It was a sentiment shared by the Merseyside faithful inside the ballroom as they belted out You'll Never Walk Alone in the closing stages of the match.
David King, 37, a fan for 25 years, said: "This season, we've beaten Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris St Germain in the Champions League, and we achieved a record points tally. A lot of this squad is still young too, so I believe we are going to get there (and win the Premier League) eventually."

Football: Liverpool laying groundwork for sustained success, says Klopp

LONDON (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool's Premier League rivals that the leaders are laying the foundations for long-term success.
Klopp's side sit four points clear at the top as they chase Liverpool's first English title since 1990.
But the Liverpool boss does not want this season's potential title triumph to be a one-off.
The German believes the willingness of Liverpool's owner John W Henry to reward star players with improved contracts is key to fulfilling his ambition for sustained success.
Andrew Robertson is the latest to commit himself to the club. His new five-year contract follows long-term deals for Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson.
"In general it's always a good sign to have the opportunity to extend contracts early," Klopp told reporters on Friday (Jan 18).
"If we can keep these boys together, we are in the middle of our development, so it's good news for Liverpool.
"These 17-18 players plus the really young boys, that's the squad of the future. It should be like this. It's investment, the club gave us the opportunity to do it. Really nice."
Klopp is yet to win a trophy since taking charge at Liverpool but there are plenty of signs he is on the verge of ending that drought this term.
While Klopp would not be drawn on just how successful Liverpool can be with their current crop, he agreed they are now strong enough, on and off the pitch, for a period of challenging for major honours.
"Progress is something everybody should expect. The club gave us a fantastic opportunity to bring in outstanding players, to keep outstanding players. My job is to make sure we perform on the pitch," he said.
"Where will we be in two or three years? I have no idea but the age group is good. This season will not finish our development.
"It doesn't look like we'll lose any key player (and) we build a new training ground, another step in the future."
Liverpool are likely to offer promising youngster Ki-Jana Hoever a professional contract after he turned 17 on Friday.
The Dutch youth international became the third-youngest player in the club's history when he made his debut in the FA Cup defeat at Wolves earlier this month.
"He can sign professional now. If you turn 17, life should be really cool, yeah?" added Klopp ahead of Saturday's clash with Crystal Palace.
"There are big steps to make for all of these boys. Ki-Jana will be fine, he is really happy in the moment. We showed him where he will be in the future. Now he has to make all the steps alone, but supported by us.
"Contracts are no concern in this moment - there were plenty of reasons for him to join us. The boys are here, and now we work with them."

Crucial to beat Watford to stop losing streak: Moura

Crucial to beat Watford to stop losing streak: Moura
LONDON • Tottenham forward Lucas Moura has urged his team to get back to winning ways, after Spurs crashed out of two domestic Cup competitions in the past week.
After losing in the League Cup semi-finals at Chelsea via a penalty shoot-out, Spurs also suffered a shock defeat by Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
This means that they are left with two trophies to fight for this season - the Premier League, where they are third and nine points behind leaders Liverpool (60 points), and the Champions League, where they face Borussia Dortmund in the last 16 next month.
Spurs have not won a title since their League Cup win in 2008 and Moura said that it is crucial that the team turn their fortunes around, starting with a home league game against Watford today.
"The most important thing now is to return to a win," the Brazilian said on the club website on Monday, a day after manager Mauricio Pochettino suggested that finishing in the top four in the league should be their priority.
"It is a difficult moment. But we need to stay together, stay strong because we know that we have talent. We need to keep our heads up.
"We have a lot of experience, great players and we will be good for the rest of the season."
Wounded by fatigue and injuries to key attacking players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli, Spurs will at least have Moura to provide some firepower up front.
The 26-year-old returned to the starting line-up against Palace on Sunday after a knee problem.
Forward Son Heung-min is also back earlier than expected after South Korea's Asian Cup quarter-final exit to Qatar, although he may not be ready to feature today after missing three games.
"He's so tired, he played three games. Very tough games," Pochettino said. "We hope he'll be available and ready on Wednesday to help the team."

Football: Hatem wonder strike secures Qatar upset of South Korea in Asian Cup

ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Qatar's Abdulaziz Hatem scored with a stunning late strike as the 2022 World Cup hosts upset Son Heung-min's South Korea 1-0 to reach the semi-finals of the Asian Cup for the first time on Friday (Jan 25).
The defensive midfielder's left-footed shot came out of the blue in the 78th minute and flew past South Korea goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu to decide a largely disappointing contest in front of a crowd of only 13,700 at Zayed Sport City.
Twice former champions South Korea poured forward to try and rescue the match but were unable to produce an equaliser and it will be the Qataris who will face holders Australia or hosts the United Arab Emirates for a place in the final next Tuesday.
The political rift between Qatar and the UAE meant the Maroons were supported by only a couple of hundred Omanis but they celebrated wildly in front of them at the final whistle.
Pre-tournament favourites South Korea, who had been looking to reach the last four for a record-extending 11th time, bow out before the semi-finals for the first time since 2004.
Both teams had played their last 16 matches on Tuesday, which perhaps contributed to a forgettable first half with just one shot on target - Akram Afif's long-range effort after 32 minutes which South Korea keeper Kim safely gathered.
The Qataris came out with more attacking intent in the second half but were almost immediately caught on the break with Hwang Ui-jo forcing a save out of Saad Al Sheeb.
The game was opening up with chance at both ends and Son, who had looked fatigued since joining the South Korean squad for their third group game, started to impose his influence.
The Tottenham Hotspur forward got a low drive on target in the 72nd minute which went straight to Saad and made a decoy run before Kim Jin-su curled the ball onto the outside of the post from a free kick three minutes later.
Just when it looked like the Koreans might be getting on top, though, the ball broke for Hatem in midfield and seconds later it was nestled in the bottom right-hand corner of the South Korean net.
Hwang Ui-jo had the ball in the back of the opposite net two minutes later but was ruled offside, a decision confirmed by the video assistant referee, and Qatar held on to secure a famous victory.
