Football: Kane making 'fantastic' recovery, says Spurs boss Pochettino

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino says Harry Kane is making a "fantastic" recovery and could be back in action ahead of schedule following the ankle injury he suffered last month against Manchester United.
Kane was initially ruled out until March, but Spurs boss Pochettino said the England captain could feature in his side's Premier League match at Burnley on Feb 23.
"Now he is here, he is doing well, he is doing fantastic. You know very well we need to stop him every day because he wants to be ahead of his recovery," Pochettino said on Friday (Feb 8) ahead of Tottenham's clash with Leicester on Sunday.
"He's very optimistic and determined to play as soon as possible - it's unbelievable but he's doing well.
"If you see him he's nearly ready to play but we need to be realistic too and of course in between all the areas to take the best decision.
"He's so close to coming back again. Not for Sunday, not for Wednesday but we will see after."
Pochettino, whose side are third in the Premier League, five points behind Manchester City and Liverpool, spoke of his disappointment that their clash with Leicester has been moved to Sunday for television when Spurs face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The Argentine also said he felt it would be "tough" for Tottenham to move into their new stadium before the end of the season.
The club announced another delay to the grand opening earlier this week, confirming that the north London derby against Arsenal on March 2 will now take place at their temporary home of Wembley.
Spurs were originally due to move into their new 62,000-seater White Hart Lane stadium for the start of the current campaign.
The move has been put back on numerous occasions and now, with the Arsenal game confirmed as being played at Wembley, there are just five home games left.
Asked if he still expected to relocate before the end of the season, he said: "My gut feeling (is that) it will be tough but I hope and I wish to be in the new stadium."
Pochettino also denied that he and assistant coach Jesus Perez had a secret dinner date with David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane during the week.
With Beckham and Zidane both having played for Real Madrid and Pochettino heavily linked with the managerial post at the Bernabeu, the rumour mill was sent spinning when all were photographed leaving the same London restaurant on Tuesday.
"I was with Jesus and another person. We were three and there was a table. We met by coincidence with (Beckham and Zidane) and that is all there is to it," Pochettino said when quizzed over the incident.

AMSTERDAM (REUTERS) - More than 100 Juventus supporters were detained by Dutch police on Wednesday (April 10) before their Champions League quarter-final first leg match at Ajax Amsterdam while home fans were also arrested as a water cannon was used outside the ground.
Amsterdam police said the water cannon was used to put out flares and fireworks as home fans were gathering outside the venue.
They also arrested several fans with fireworks after warning in the days leading up to the fixture that they would not allow supporters to let them off outside the stadium in what has become a traditional pre-match gathering.
Earlier, police said two separate groups of Italian supporters had been held after searches found them carrying fireworks, sticks, pepper spray, screwdrivers and one a hammer.
A first group of some 46 Juve fans were held at the stadium's metro station in the hours before kick off as Dutch and Italian forces worked together to identify potential troublemakers, the police added.
A second group of 61 were stopped and held in the vicinity of the stadium, they said.
Pictures posted on the police website (www.politie.nl) of confiscated items also included a knife.

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino said on Tuesday (Dec 18) that he was committed to delivering results in his current job, in comments that may do little to quell speculation about him replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
Pochettino has emerged as bookmakers' favourite to succeed Mourinho, with the Argentine viewed as a suitable long-term candidate to deliver attacking football and develop young talent at Old Trafford.
The 46-year-old told a news conference he was saddened by Mourinho's departure, and he dismissed what he described as "rumours" over his own future. But he did not flatly deny any interest in replacing the Portuguese.
"I went to send my best wishes to him, I'm so sorry. I have a good relationship with him... he's a good friend and it's sad news," Pochettino told a news conference.
"The business you know very well - a lot of rumours happen. I think after nearly five years there's a lot of rumours about my position as manager at Tottenham. I cannot answer this type of question.
"It's not my business what happens in another club now. I'm focused on training and delivering my best result in this club (Tottenham)."
Pochettino, who joined Tottenham from Southampton in 2014, has guided the club to consecutive top-three finishes in the Premier League, but he is yet to win a trophy.

Former United skipper Gary Neville pointed out on Tuesday that while Pochettino had not picked up any silverware in England, he had a number of qualities that would appeal to United fans.
"My view is they need someone who meets the three key principles of the club - promotion of youth, entertaining football, and to win matches," Neville told Sky Sports.
Pochettino shrugged off the suggestion lightly.
"Of course I respect the opinion of everyone. But people say different things," Pochettino said.

AMSTERDAM (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen said they threw tactics out the window and relied on grit and heart to come back from 3-0 down on aggregate to beat Ajax Amsterdam on away goals and reach the Champions League final on Wednesday (May 8).
Having lost the first leg in London 1-0, Tottenham got off to the worst possible start in Amsterdam by going 2-0 down on the night.
The second leg turned on its head after halftime, however, as Lucas Moura scored twice in quick succession before netting a 96th minute effort to complete his hat-trick and make it 3-3 on aggregate.
"It was a non-tactical performance, it was more of a fight, more of a heart performance, and that's how we won it," Danish playmaker Eriksen told BT Sport.
"It was a ridiculous game. We were really far down, we tried to fight back and we're just lucky. I feel sorry for Ajax, they played a very good game against us.
"In the end we're just lucky we scored. It's a relief, because we've been fighting for this and I think it's a dream for everyone to be in the Champions League final."
The midfielder revealed that there was no great tactical change at halftime as Spurs simply rolled up their sleeves and went at Ajax in the second half.
"We weren't able to look ourselves in the mirror if we (were to) go down three or four nil today - we had to fight back, there was no other option," Eriksen said.
After Liverpool fought back from a 3-0 first-leg defeat to beat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate on Tuesday, the final will be an all-English affair.

"The gaffer mentioned Liverpool's display at the hotel before the match - the gaffer doesn't mind us losing but we have to lose the right way."
Moura, however, was not prepared to let the match slip, and slotted the winner for Spurs deep in stoppage time.
"It's been a rollercoaster of a season. For him (Moura) to get us in the final, he'll be a hero. I hope he gets a statue in England after this ... I'm blown away, there's really no words for it," Eriksen said.
There was one major tactical shift that did play a crucial role in the victory, however. At half-time Pochettino took out midfielder Victor Wanyama and replaced him with Spanish forward Fernando Llorente.
Llorente, whose main asset is his height and strength in the air, placed himself on Ajax defender Daley Blind and that upset the solidity of the Dutch defence.
The Spaniard's presence caused confusion and created instability which Moura was able to exploit to the full.
With a big man as a focal point for the attack, Tottenham were able to take a more direct approach - with crosses from deep and in the latter stages, hopeful punts into the box.
Llorente would not have been on the field had Spurs' first choice striker Harry Kane been fit but the injured England captain was in the dressing room at the break and he said the focus was purely on effort.
"At half time we said it is 45 minutes to give everything... the lads dug deep, showed passion, showed character, showed heart and that is what it's all about," said Kane.
"Over the two legs we didn't play as well as we would have liked but we found a way to win," he added.
Former England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, in Amsterdam as a pundit for BT Sport, said the Llorente introduction had been key.
"Fernando Llorente - what a substitution. He stood on Daley Blind. Blind couldn't deal with him and the boys came up behind him."

'Completely shocked': Nantes coach, fans in tears over Sala

NANTES, France (AFP) - Nantes coach Vahid Halilhodzic admitted the disappearance of striker Emiliano Sala, whose plane came down in the English Channel, had left him "completely shocked" while fans said on Thursday (Jan 24) they felt as if they had lost "someone from our own family".
Sala had been on his way from the French club to Wales on Monday night where he was due to start a new period in his career with Premier League Cardiff City.
Police said on Thursday that the chances of finding the 28-year-old Argentine alive were "extremely remote" as they announced they were ending their search.
"I had a particular relationship with him because from the moment of my arrival we talked a lot. I spoke with him..." said veteran coach Halilhodzic who started to weep before composing himself enough to continue.
His voice still trembled as he added: "For me, it is perhaps the most difficult moment of my sporting life. I have known others but in terms of sport, this has left me completely shocked."
Sala had been at Nantes since 2015 and had scored 12 league goals this season before signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with relegation-threatened Cardiff in a reported â‚¬17 million (S$26 million) deal.
At Nantes' training centre at La Chapelle-sur-Erdre in western France, the squad and staff met with fans who had gathered to pay their respects.
"Keep hoping," said one poster which contained a picture of Sala and was pinned to the fence of the training centre.
Flowers and candles were also laid out as fans, numbed by Sala's disappearance, held an emotional vigil for their former player.
"We know that he is lost, but there remains a small corner of hope that still exists," 29-year-old Maxime Perrouin told AFP.

'NO MINUTE'S SILENCE, WE STILL HAVE HOPE'

After the Nantes squad had finished their training session for the day, players and staff were applauded by the fans who numbered more than 300.
"We ask you to stand united with us," captain Valentin Rongier told them.

"It is for this reason that we are not going to have a minute's silence or a minute's applause because we still have hope."
Perrouin, who was at the centre with his pet Huskie dog dressed in a Nantes shirt, said fans needed to pay their respects to Sala and support the team who are currenty just six points above the relegation zone in Ligue 1.
"The players really need us. I think it's going to make them happy to see all the people gathered there for them and I think they'll use it as a force to excel themselves on the field," said Perrouin.
"I have tears in my eyes as I am talking to you, looking at his photo - it's like we have lost somebody from our family."
Another fan Andree Guittet, 69, who has supported the Canaries for 35 years, said she originally refused to believed the news of Sala's disapperance.
"Someone phoned me - I thought it was 'fake news', it wasn't possible.
"You couldn't say he was a player like Neymar or Mbappe, but he was a battler, he was a warrior."

MADRID (AFP) - Gareth Bale hit an 11-minute hat-trick on Wednesday (Dec 19) as Real Madrid strolled into the Club World Cup final by beating Kashima Antlers 3-1 in Abu Dhabi.
Bale scored in the 44th, 53rd and 55th minutes at the Zayed Sports City Stadium to put Madrid within touching distance of a record fourth success in this competition, and their third triumph in a row.
Real are currently tied with their La Liga rivals Barcelona, having each won it three times before, but it would be a major surprise if the European champions were not hoisting the trophy again on Saturday, when they face hosts Al Ain in the final.
Bale had missed the 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano last weekend with an ankle problem but he was in irresistible form, albeit against limited opposition.
The Welshman joins Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only player to score in three separate Club World Cup tournaments while his treble, coming either side of half-time, is the fastest in the history of the competition.
"Bale ate everything today, the floodlights, the stands, the nets," coach Santiago Solari said. "He has shown what a player he is and what he can do. So let him rest and eat the nets again on Saturday."
Kashima Antlers, from Japan's J1 League, qualified after winning the Asian Champions League last month but, despite a lively start and a late consolation from Shoma Doi, they were clearly second best.

REAL FIND THEIR GROOVE

They soon found their rhythm, however, with Karim Benzema twice shooting straight at the goalkeeper while Bale had an effort blocked after nipping between the Antlers central defenders.

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola says Manchester City and Liverpool have raised the bar in what is required to win a Premier League title after a blockbuster campaign by both teams.
If both sides win their remaining three games, Liverpool would finish the campaign on 97 points - the third-highest tally in the Premier League era - and still fail to end their 29-year wait for an English top-flight title because City would have 98.
It is a far cry from the 1996-97 campaign when Manchester United won the championship with just 75 points.
That means, according to Guardiola, that future champions will need to be aiming towards the magical century, which City achieved last season, to be assured of lifting the trophy.
"The standards we created last year at Manchester City, people know that you have to be close to 100," he told reporters on Friday. "Before it was 90.
"This standard was last season, we helped Liverpool to achieve it this year and Liverpool helped us to keep going, so thanks to Liverpool we are competing.
"Liverpool know that to win you have to make a lot of points. That's what we communicate to anyone.
"Next season, Chelsea are getting better, Man United, Tottenham. At the end when you are 25 points above United, 22 points ahead of other ones, if they want to stay there you have to improve the standard. It was easier before, everyone can lose to anyone."

TREBLE CHANCE

The demanding City manager, still in the hunt to win a first-ever domestic treble in English football, is already challenging his players to maintain their standards next season.
And he invoked the names of some legendary stars from other sports to try and give them an example of how they must maintain their status at the top of the Premier League.
"You know when Usain Bolt makes 100m race - that's the standard and the others have to achieve it," he said.
"Like, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, that's the same. One hundred points in a season - if you want to compete you have to do that.
"I'd sign to maintain that level, I'd sign to do what we have done again in the Premier League, I don't expect more.
"To push each other, knowing the others are at the same level. Find out what we can do to win the game, after work harder, respect the opponents, improve on what we've done this season. That's the only way I know."
Guardiola, whose side travel to Burnley on Sunday, also explained his decision to leave England defender John Stones out of his squad entirely for the recent 2-0 victory at Manchester United.
Stones has struggled to maintain a regular place in Guardiola's high-flying team this season.
"It depends on the quality of the players and what I see in the training sessions, if they are happy, a bit more down," he said.
"There are many reasons but it's not the quality because I know them and I know that always they compete good."

This is exactly what Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim has done with Salford City, which he co-owns with Manchester United's Class of '92, as the English club earned promotion to the National Football League on Saturday (May 12) after beating AFC Fylde 3-0 in the National League play-off final at Wembley.

A large part of Salford's success is down to the new owners' financial support - the club reportedly received more than Â£2.4 million (S$4.2 million) in interest-free loans - that enabled them to sign key players like striker Adam Rooney, who joined from top Scottish club Aberdeen for a reported Â£300,000, a huge fee in non-league football.
Gary told ST the budget for next season is unlikely to veer much from this season's, adding: "Four promotions in five years. We said we would do it in eight, and we thought that was quite aggressive.
"It is tough, but we have done it and we are so proud and delighted. Five years ago, we had 180 fans, now we have got a few thousand here, so it is amazing.
"The National League is harder to get out of in the sense that League Two has three automatic promotion slots and one via play-off, so we are definitely going for it."

Football: Silverware matters most to Emery as Arsenal aim to win for missing Mkhitaryan

BAKU (AFP) - Henrikh Mkhitaryan's Arsenal teammates stated their determination to win Wednesday's Europa League final against Chelsea in Baku for the absent Armenian star, as Gunners boss Unai Emery told his team to focus on winning silverware rather than worrying about a possible return to the Champions League.
The build-up to this London derby European final has been marred by Mkhitaryan's decision not to travel for the game because of fears over his safety due to an ongoing political dispute between his home country and neighbouring Azerbaijan.
He had already skipped Arsenal's trip to the Azeri capital for a group game against Qarabag last October.
"He is very important for us, on the pitch and off the pitch, and we want to give him as well a trophy tomorrow," said Granit Xhaka, the Swiss midfielder.
Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who previously played with Mkhitaryan at Borussia Dortmund before moving to England last year, posted a picture on Twitter earlier this week of the two in training under the caption "Missing you bro".
"We were five or six years together so I know him very well, we are very good friends. We have to play for him and for the players who are injured and if we win this game it is also for them," he said at Tuesday's (May 28) pre-match press conference.
It remains to be seen if Mkhitaryan's absence will handicap Arsenal on the field at the Baku Olympic Stadium, as the Gunners prepare for a huge twin challenge.
They are seeking their first European trophy in 25 years and also have to win in order to reach the Champions League next season after missing out on a top-four place in the Premier League. In contrast, Chelsea have already secured a return to Europe's top table.
"We have two targets - the first and most important is to win a title," said Emery, who has already won this competition three times with Sevilla.
"Each title is very important for a team like Arsenal or Chelsea, in England and also in Europe."

CECH TO START?

Emery's own desire to win this competition for a fourth time in six years is understandable, but for Arsenal there is also a need - financially and in terms of prestige - to return to the Champions League after a two-season absence.
"For a club like Arsenal we have to be in the Champions League. It's an amazing and important game tomorrow because we want to give us, the fans and the club the Champions League back," said Xhaka.
"I think if you see the season, maybe we deserved to be there in the top four. But this is a big game, a final, we can take a trophy and we can go back to the Champions League."
Meanwhile, Emery refused to be drawn on whether Petr Cech would start in his final game for the club before retiring.
The veteran goalkeeper has been strongly linked with a return to Chelsea, his old club, in an upstairs capacity, which could have a role in Emery's decision whether or not to play the 37 year-old here.
Cech has played most European games this season, while the German Bernd Leno has been the first choice in the Premier League.
"I can speak about Petr Cech a lot, but above all he's a great man, a great professional," said Emery.
"It is going to be his last match tomorrow because he will finish his career and I want to do something important with him, playing or not playing."

With his side seemingly down and out, trailing 2-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate, Lucas produced a career-defining performance as his stunning second-half hat-trick engineered the latest jaw-dropping Champions League comeback to send Spurs through on away goals.
Yet scarcely 18 months ago, he was at a particularly low ebb after finding himself frozen out in Paris despite five trophy-laden years at the club.
Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham offered the Brazilian an escape route in January 2018, and Lucas is close to making good on his promise to take the club to the very top.
Upon his arrival in North London, he said: "I think the team is very, very strong. We can win a lot of things and why not the Champions League?"
Just over a year on and Spurs are one win away from becoming European champions after Lucas conjured up a display at the Johan Cruyff Arena befitting of the late Dutch great.
"They are all heroes but Lucas was a super-hero. Unbelievable hat-trick. He deserves it, he is a great guy," a tearful Pochettino said after Tottenham's 3-2 win in Amsterdam set up a June 1 final with fellow comeback kings Liverpool.
Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen even called for a statue of Lucas, who dragged Spurs back from the brink with what were remarkably his first Champions League knockout goals.

Ajax, 1-0 winners in London, appeared home and dry after surging a further two goals clear in the return leg, but Lucas had other ideas with a quickfire double on the hour.
That gave Spurs hope but they were still heading out until Lucas squeezed a low shot beyond Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana in the 96th minute to earn his place in Tottenham folklore.
"Football gives us moments like this that we cannot imagine," said Lucas. "We need to enjoy it. Look at me - it's the best moment in my life, my career.
"It's impossible to explain what I am feeling. I am very, very happy and proud of my teammates.
"We always believed in this moment, that it was possible. We gave everything and deserved this moment. We are a family. It's impossible to explain - impossible."
He became just the fifth player to score a hat-trick in a Champions League semi-final, after Alessandro Del Piero, Ivica Olic, Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Billed at his PSG unveiling as a talent on par with Neymar, Lucas left France without truly fulfilling his potential, but he has now shown their loss is very much Tottenham's gain.
"It's not a response. Criticism is part of football. I knew I could play for a big club, that I was capable of playing in the semi-finals of the Champions League," he said.

LONDON (AFP) - Eden Hazard's magnificent double earned Chelsea a 2-0 win over West Ham on Monday (April 8) and moved Maurizio Sarri's men up to third in the Premier League.
Reports continue to link Hazard with a summer move to Real Madrid with the Belgian refusing to extend his contract at Stamford Bridge beyond 2020.
And he underlined once more how much Chelsea will miss their number 10 should he depart for the Spanish capital with a dazzling display, capped by a sensational solo goal to open the scoring.
Hazard collected the ball just inside the West Ham half, but strode forward jinking past three defenders before coolly slotting past Lukasz Fabianski after 24 minutes.
The hosts and Hazard had to wait until stoppage time to secure the three points as this time he controlled inside the box and fired into the far corner for his 19th goal of the season.
Victory moves Chelsea two points clear of Tottenham and three ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal in the race for a top-four finish, but both their London rivals and Manchester United - five points back in sixth - now have a game in hand on Sarri's men.
In contrast to Hazard's form, Gonzalo Higuain has managed just three goals since joining Chelsea on loan in January, all against already relegated opposition in Huddersfield and Fulham.
The Argentine stated his desire before kick-off to make his move permanent should Chelsea successfully appeal a one-year transfer ban imposed by FIFA, but he had another night to forget in front of goal.
Shortly after opening the scoring, a wonderful looping Hazard pass picked out Higuain inside the area but a combination of Fabianski and the post denied him a much-needed goal from a narrow angle.
Marko Arnautovic was then fortunate to avoid conceding a penalty for barging into Hazard, but that seemed the Hammers' only way of stopping the Belgian captain.

Hudson-Odoi startsÂ

Callum Hudson-Odoi was handed just his second Premier League start and the teenage England international was only denied his first top-flight goal by a flying save from Fabianski to tip his rising drive over.
Higuain's lack of confidence was in evidence as he passed up the chance to head home N'Golo Kante's cross and instead saw his shot deflected behind after taking a touch to control on his chest.
Hazard on the other hand was demanding the ball at every opportunity and was first to threaten again after the break with a shot that flashed across the West Ham goal.
However, having failed to muster a single attack of note before the break, the visitors sparked into life in the second half and could have made Chelsea pay for their failure to kill the game off.
Arnautovic's clever cut-back picked out the unmarked Manuel Lanzini at the edge of the box, but his shot was too close to Kepa Arrizabalaga before Aaron Cresswell then arrowed a shot inches wide of the far post.
The majority of the chances continued to come at the other end, though, as Ruben Loftus-Cheek lifted his effort into the grateful arms of Fabianski with just the Polish goalkeeper to beat.
Ross Barkley then just failed to reach a dangerous Hudson-Odoi cross and Fabianski denied substitute Olivier Giroud as Sarri grew increasingly frustrated on the sidelines.
The Italian was finally able to relax in stoppage time when Hazard was given acres of space to control Barkley's pass and produced the finish to match his performance.

LONDON â€¢ Cardiff City players have yet to come to terms with the disappearance of Â£15 million (S$26.7 million) club-record signing Emiliano Sala, a week after the striker's plane went missing over the English Channel.
Despite the Argentinian never getting the opportunity to make his debut for the Premier League club - he had been pencilled in to start at Arsenal today - the 28-year-old is still considered "part of the team" and defender Sol Bamba told Sky Sports the squad had been "hurt and affected by it (the tragedy)".
He said: "If you're human, you're going to be hurt by it. If you've got a heart, you're going to be affected.
"Even if he wasn't fully part of us, from the minute he signed for us and came to see the boys to say hello, he was part of us.
"We have to hope because we haven't found his body yet, even if the chances are very slim, but we like to think there can be a happy ending, hopefully. It was a tough week... Everyone was in shock."
While conceding the awful circumstances were far from ideal preparations for their trip to the Emirates, with last Tuesday's training session called off, the Ivorian claimed the team "were going to do the best we can".
Cardiff manager Neil Warnock echoed the same thoughts of finding Sala alive, even though a minute's silence will be held before all league games this week in honour of the player and David Ibbotson, the plane's pilot.
The Bluebirds boss admitted at his pre-match press conference that it had been "the most difficult week in my career by a mile" but said "the players need some sort of distraction".
He added: "I can't get my head around the situation, when I look at (Sala's sister) Romina and the family. Everybody is hoping (to find Sala) like the family.
"I've met the lad and know how he was looking forward to this (playing in England). I've never experienced anything like it... It's been a sombre mood. It's just as well we have a game tomorrow."
Arsenal manager Unai Emery will also be wary of the "knock-on (effect) with the (Cardiff) players", even though Warnock will again be forced to field Callum Paterson, a converted right-back, up front.
The Gunners have conceded 32 league goals this term, and their backline will be tested after captain Laurent Koscielny and Sokratis Papastathopoulos joined Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin - both already ruled out for the season - on the injury list.
Although there were some positive news with Emery confirming Koscielny did not break his jaw and Sokratis was likely to be out for "maybe two or three weeks", Arsenal have only two fit centre-backs at the moment in Shkodran Mustafi and rookie Konstantinos Mavropanos for their "very important match against Cardiff".

LONDON â€¢ Unai Emery said he is not worried that Arsenal failed to keep a first away clean sheet of the season, as first-half goals from Alex Iwobi and Alexandre Lacazatte secured a 2-1 win at Premier League bottom side Huddersfield.
The result kept the Gunners in the thick of the chase for a top-four finish and Champions League football although questions remain about their defensive frailty.
Deep into injury time on Saturday, Adama Diakhaby broke clear on goal, lifted the ball over Bernd Leno and watched as Sead Kolasinac turned into his own goal via an unfortunate deflection.
Not that Emery was too concerned about that late blot on his team's performance.
"A clean sheet is important, but our main worry is to win," he said. "The main thing is to score one more goal than them and, after that, it is to keep a clean sheet.
"Every player worked very well and the last action, unfortunately for us they scored and also maybe they deserved it."
Arsenal have won the joint most points in the final 10 minutes of matches this season, but relying heavily on second-half turnarounds and late shows could only go on for so long.
At the heart of the problem is their defensive record - Arsenal remain the only Premier League team without an away clean sheet.
Emery had cut an increasingly animated and frustrated figure on the touchline as his team failed to kill off Huddersfield in the first period, even surviving a strong penalty appeal after Jason Puncheon's shot struck the arm of Laurent Koscielny after 25 minutes.
"That is me," he said, explaining his antics. "It is my personality. If I am here, it is because in my career I progressed like that. If for one moment I thought it's negative, then I wouldn't do it."
The win moved Arsenal to within one point of fourth-placed Manchester United (51 points), even though Chelsea could regain fourth spot with a draw or win over champions Manchester City in their late match yesterday.
Insisting that a top-four finish was a realistic target, the Spaniard said: "I think it's difficult, but we can (finish in the top four). After 26 games, we are on our way and our motivation is very great and we've brought our target closer."
