Football: Injuries no excuse for quadruple chasing Man City, says Guardiola
MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has warned his players not to use injuries and fatigue as an excuse as the English champions chase a historic quadruple of trophies this season.
City secured the first of a potential four-trophy haul by beating Chelsea on penalties on Sunday in the League Cup and entertain West Ham in the Premier League on Wednesday just a point adrift of leaders Liverpool.
Guardiola's men also face Swansea in the FA Cup quarter-finals and are well set for the last eight of the Champions League after winning 3-2 away to Schalke in the first leg of their last 16 tie.
However, injuries to Aymeric Laporte and Fernandinho blighted victory on Sunday with John Stones and Gabriel Jesus also unlikely to return before an international break in mid-March.
"I don't want to see excuses from my players about tiredness, fixtures, schedules, the number of games. That is nothing," said Guardiola on Tuesday (Feb 26).
"When you have the opportunity to fight until the end, to fight for the title, then the power, the energy that gives you that is higher than any excuses you find.
"We have to run and beat them (the opposition), then beat them again. In the last two months of the season, the mentality makes the difference.
"I don't care about the way we play. I want the smell in the locker room, I want to smell at the beginning of the game and during the game, that we can win.
"When one competition is over I want to see that we want to win this title. I want to see it on their faces they want to win the title and I hope that after I will be able to tell you I saw something special."
Fernandinho's absence was strongly felt when City lost to Crystal Palace and Leicester in December to cede Liverpool an advantage in the title race, while Laporte has made such a big impression in just over a year in England that the Frenchman was rewarded with a new contract last week.
"People say: Without this player, they are not the same. It doesn't matter," added Guardiola.
"We have a good squad, a good second team, and I want to see the desire that we want to win the title."
A run of three draws in four Premier League games for Liverpool has allowed the champions back into the race, the latest of which came in a 0-0 draw away to Manchester United in the hours before the League Cup final.
And Guardiola wants his side to continue applying pressure with Liverpool desperate to end a 29-year wait to win the title.
"When I've said that we focus on our game, that's because it's the truth, but of course we look at what they do, and when they don't win we are happy," he said.
"We have the difference of one point between us and we have 33 to play for so it's in our hands. It's in their hands but our hands too.
"The only thing we can do is put on pressure, to feel we are not to drop points, but to win. Every game is the same, when you are on top you can drop points but when you are behind, you cannot."

Football: Barcelona sign Colombian defender Murillo on loan
BARCELONA (AFP) - Barcelona have signed Colombian international centre-back Jeison Murillo on loan from Valencia until the end of the season, the two clubs announced on Thursday (Dec 20).
The La Liga leaders have struggled defensively this season, conceding 19 goals in 11 league games before a run of three consecutive clean sheets, while also losing defenders Samuel Umtiti and Thomas Vermaelen to injuries.
Barcelona said that they will have an option to make the deal for Murillo permanent in June for €25 million (S$39 million).
Spanish media reported that Barca coach Ernesto Valverde had made a special request for the club to sign Murillo, despite the 26-year-old having played only one La Liga match all season.
Murillo has played 27 times for Colombia and has previously spent two years at Inter Milan.

Real's woes compounded by Bale's latest injury
Real's woes compounded by Bale's latest injury
VILLARREAL (Spain) • Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari believes losing his star forward Gareth Bale to injury midway through his team's LaLiga match at Villarreal cost his side victory.
The European champions endured a frustrating start to the new year on Thursday as they drew 2-2 at struggling Villarreal and were left seven points behind leaders Barcelona.
"We had the victory in our hands and wanted to kill the game. But they came back and got the equaliser," Solari told Movistar.
"They pressed a lot, were playing at home and needed the points.
"Gareth leaving like that cost us as he had a problem and we missed that counter-attacking edge, and Gareth is a specialist at just that. He got a bang and felt something and was not able to continue."
Former Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla gave the home side the lead in the fourth minute of the game which was rescheduled due to Real's participation in last month's Club World Cup. He bent a wonderful shot into the bottom corner of Thibaut Courtois' goal.
But Real struck back three minutes later with a headed goal from Karim Benzema.
Raphael Varane then gave the visitors the lead in the 20th but it was 34-year-old Cazorla, having overcome a terrible run of injuries to resurrect his career in Spain, who had the final say with his second goal.
Real have not won their opening away game of a new year since 2014, and Cazorla's late strike prevented them from going level on points with Sevilla, keeping them in fourth place after 17 games.
Apart from conceding early, Real were impressive in the first half but lost their grip on proceedings after Bale was substituted with a knock.
Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric, who helped set up the equaliser, followed Bale off the pitch midway through the second half and Villarreal, spurred on by their supporters, showed more intensity to regain control of the play.
Villarreal, who have reached the last 32 of the Europa League despite a dire domestic season, clawed their way out of the relegation zone to 17th in the standings, level on points with 18th-placed Athletic Bilbao.
"This result will give us strength," said Villarreal coach Luis Garcia, who has taken two points from two games since succeeding the sacked Javi Calleja.
"I imagine that every game from now on will be a battle, a war to survive. But hopefully we'll come through it, and this point gives us a big emotional boost."

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City players will pay for 26 coaches to take fans to Wembley next month for the FA Cup final, the club announced on Friday (April 19).
"The support from our fans throughout the season has been nothing short of incredible. Travelling to so many games in league and Cup competitions, both home and away, is not easy to do and is something that every player in our squad values and appreciates," said captain Vincent Kompany.
City, who have already won the Community Shield and League Cup at Wembley this season, will face Watford in the FA Cup final at the London venue on May 18.
By that time, they may also be Premier League champions although their hopes of winning the Champions League were dashed in an epic quarter-final loss to Tottenham in midweek.
"Although the result was not the one that we had hoped for, it was very special to hear our fans in full voice for ninety minutes backing the team," added Kompany.
"We still have so much to fight for this season, and this is our way of saying thank you to them for being with us every step of the way."
The coaches for the 680km round-trip to London will be funded by each of the 26 players in the first-team squad.

NYON, SWITZERLAND (AFP) - Liverpool will take on fellow five-time winners Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League, while Jose Mourinho's struggling Manchester United face French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
Holders Real Madrid were paired with Ajax in Monday's (Dec 17) draw in Nyon as the Spaniards attempt to lift the trophy for the fifth time in six seasons, while Lionel Messi and Barcelona will play Lyon.
Both Liverpool and Bayern have a rich tradition in the competition, each winning it five times and Liverpool were beaten finalists last season.
Liverpool are the current form side of the two and sit top of the Premier League while Bayern, under new coach Niko Kovac, have been far short of their own high standards in the Bundesliga this season.
"That's the team of the hour, the league leaders in England, they are playing really good football, very physical, really stepping it up. We are looking forward to it," Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said of the tie with Liverpool.
"A tough cookie, but that's something to look forward to as a player."
Liverpool boss Klopp added: "It will be a tough one, an interesting one, and I am looking forward to it." .
Pep Guardiola's Manchester City take on German side Schalke 04 while Atletico Madrid, beaten finalists in 2014 and 2016, come up against Cristiano Ronaldo and Italian heavyweights Juventus.
"A very difficult match, with few goals," Juve vice-president Pavel Nedved predicted.
"No doubt Cristiano is the man of the Champions League, he has always shown that, with goals and victories. Our team is very strong and we can be calm and confident."
Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund will meet Tottenham Hotspur for the second season in a row, having faced each other in last year's group stage, while Roma meet two-time former champions Porto.
"We've already met them (Tottenham) twice. A strong opponent, the chances are at 50-50. The team has top players. We are also strong, it will be interesting," Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told Sky.
Meanwhile, United go into a first ever meeting with PSG trailing Premier League leaders Liverpool by 19 points following Sunday's 3-1 defeat at Anfield, and face a formidable task against a side featuring Neymar and Kylian Mbappe - the world's two most expensive players.
"It's always difficult to play Manchester United," said PSG boss Thomas Tuchel. "They have lots of experience in this competition, they've won it numerous times. It's always difficult to play at Old Trafford, it's always a big challenge.
"It's the same thing against Mourinho. He has lots of experience in this competition and you must have respect."
Manchester City's director of football Txiki Begiristain warned the English champions will not have it easy against a Schalke outfit languishing in 13th place in Germany following a nightmare start.
"Teams that have been struggling in their leagues have still they've done very well in the Champions League," said Begiristain. "Schalke will be difficult. After a winter break, German clubs are always very dangerous."
Lyon coach Bruno Genesio says his team can draw on their group stage displays against City - a 2-1 win and 2-2 draw - ahead of their clash with five-time European champions Barca.
"We'll need to pull off two big performances, in the first leg and in the return, but we can do it. We did it against City," said Genesio.
"It's tough. They are a team that Lyon has already played against but never beaten. Barca are more experienced and stronger but over two matches anything is possible," Gerard Houllier, who holds an advisory role at the French club, told RMC Sport.
"The first match is key and we are playing at home. Barca are potential champions. We have nothing to lose. Everything is a bonus for Lyon."
Teams that finished in second place in the group stage will host the first legs on Feb 12-13 and Feb 19-20 with the return matches scheduled for March 5-6 and March 12-13.

LONDON • Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes it is down to Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku to be self-motivated and follow Paul Pogba's example by proving their worth again at the club - because this should be the "best time of their lives".
Chilean forward Sanchez has scored only one goal in the English Premier League this season with injuries and patchy form restricting him to five starts, while Belgian striker Lukaku has not fired on all cylinders with six goals in 16 appearances.
Ahead of today's home league game against Bournemouth, Solskjaer was asked if he could have an impact on his front men just like he has done with midfielder Paul Pogba, who scored twice and made two assists in the last two games under the Norwegian.
"I don't agree I've done that with Paul and I can do that with Romelu and Alexis. It's up to them when they get a chance," the 45-year-old said during his press conference on Friday.
"That's the name of the game when you're a footballer. You've got to do it yourself. Yes, you want help from your manager and your teammates.
"I gave some guidelines of course on expression, freedom of expression, but that's how I've always been as a manager. You can't tell the players what to do in this position. Just enjoy playing for this club - that's the best time of your life."
Pogba struggled to influence games under former boss Jose Mourinho this season amid a reported rift between the pair but the France World Cup winner has played with more freedom under Solskjaer, who has frequently backed his team to express themselves.
"They're here for a reason - they're good players. It's up to them to use their imagination and creativity," added the former United striker, famed for his winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final when they beat Bayern Munich 2-1.
Lukaku, Sanchez and Anthony Martial all trained on Thursday after missing Wednesday's 3-1 league win over Huddersfield Town.
It also means that Solskjaer will now have a selection headache of having six forwards, including Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata, all raring to go.
He also gave 18-year-old forward Angel Gomes an outing as a late substitute against Huddersfield and has repeated his vow to use youngsters in his temporary spell in charge at Old Trafford.
Midfielder Jimmy Garner, who travelled to Cardiff last week, and forward Mason Greenwood - both 17 - are also prominent in the manager's thoughts.
"As Sir Matt (Busby) once said, if they're good enough, they're old enough," said Solskjaer.
"We're built on that tradition, we need young players coming through, it's important in the academy."
Despite the emphasis on youth, there is still a role for a nine-year veteran at the club, Antonio Valencia. Solskjaer said that the Ecuador international is "one of the best attacking right-backs in the world" and confirmed that the 33-year-old will remain captain during his rein.
Valencia had previously considered leaving United after starting only four league games this season under Mourinho.

Ikhsan opens account for new club
Ikhsan Fandi took all of two minutes to net his first goal for his new club, Raufoss IL, and helped them beat Elverum Fotball 6-1 early yesterday morning (Singapore time) at the Raufoss Storhall indoor arena in Norway.
The 19-year-old, who became the first Lion to join a European team in 30 years when he signed a two-year deal with the Norwegian second-tier side earlier this month, was brought on with fellow forward Thierry Dabove in the 59th minute of a pre-season friendly against the third-tier opponents.
The duo combined to deadly effect shortly after, when Dabove's shot was parried by former Raufoss goalkeeper Andreas Heggen, only for Ikhsan to show his predatory instincts by beating two defenders to thump the loose ball home with his right foot inside the six-yard box and make it 3-1 for Raufoss.
The new Raufoss No. 18 also displayed his willingness to run at the defence before he recorded his first assist by picking out Ryan Doghman with a through ball in the 84th minute to increase the lead to 5-1.
Ikhsan told The Sunday Times: "I'm glad I got the first goal out of the way quickly, but there are always things to improve on.
"The coaches were happy with my 30-minute performance. I just wanted to express myself and show the people here I can play football.
"But this is only a friendly and I still have to improve my fitness. I also want to link up play better and make more runs behind defences to create trouble for the opponents and opportunities for my team."
Raufoss and Ikhsan will face a sterner test when they continue their pre-season preparations with a friendly against top-division club Odds Ballklubb on Thursday.
They will kick off the new season at Nest-Sotra on March 31.
Meanwhile, 2014 S.League Coach of the Year Marko Kraljevic has left Balestier Khalsa to join Malaysian Premier League's Kelantan on a two-year deal.

They will kick off the new season at Nest-Sotra on March 31.

Football: Rashford can be as good as Kane, says Man Utd boss Solskjaer
Football: Rashford can be as good as Kane, says Man Utd boss Solskjaer
MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Marcus Rashford has the potential to be as good a centre-forward as England teammate Harry Kane as the pair prepare to face off in the Premier League this weekend.
Rashford is expected to line up as the spearhead of United's attack when they face Kane's Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday (Jan 13) with both the team and striker on a hot run of form under the interim manager.
Rashford looks reborn under interim coach Solskjaer, scoring three times in the centre-forward position as United have rattled off four straight league wins since the Norwegian took over from the sacked Mourinho in December to close in on the Champions League places.
"He can become a top, top striker," said Solskjaer. "We can talk about Harry Kane and his class and I'm sure Marcus as well. He's got the potential to get up there.
"He's got frightening pace, he's now become stronger and can hold the ball up for us. He's a great link player."
Kane, 25, has set the goal-scoring standards in English football over the past three years - he was the league's top scorer in 2015/16 and 2016/17 before finishing runner-up to Liverpool's Mohamed Salah last season.
He won the Golden Boot at last year's World Cup and this season is joint-top scorer alongside Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on 14 goals.
Rashford, 21, scored four goals in his first two senior matches for United after being been given his debut by then-manager Louis van Gaal in February 2016, and established himself as a regular squad member at Old Trafford.
However, he was regularly restricted to substitute appearances after Jose Mourinho replaced Van Gaal as manager later that year, and was often asked to play in a left-sided role, with Romelu Lukaku as the central attacker.
Since returning to United, where he played as a striker between 1996 and 2007, Solskjaer has spoken repeatedly of the need to return to the attractive, attacking football that they played for much of Alex Ferguson's reign.
A central part of Ferguson's philosophy was the development of players from the club's academy, which Rashford joined at the age of seven.
United have a proud history of producing their own talent, having included at least one youth-team graduate in every first-team matchday squad since October 1937.
Solskjaer sees Rashford's academy background as valuable, suggesting the forward has learned from a young age about the attacking style traditionally associated with United.
"Marcus has been brought up here," he said. "There were a couple of training sessions here (I watched) with the young kids, and Chongy (Tahith Chong) and Angel (Gomes) and him and Jesse, they played together in a certain way. He's a very exciting player to work with."
Solskjaer, loaned to United by Norwegian club Molde for the rest of this season, reiterated that there have been no discussions with United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward over the permanent job despite his desire to take the hot seat.
"No, we've not had that conversation," said Solskjaer. "You don't plan five or six months ahead and then suddenly change that after two weeks. No, nothing's changed. We just keep working every single day on improving the team here.
"I work with a fantastic coaching staff, I have to say. We'll put a plan together on how we want to look the next few months."

Old Trafford no longer a 'scary' place to go to, says Pep
LONDON • Pep Guardiola believes that Manchester United have lost the fear factor and that his Manchester City side are not afraid to go to Old Trafford any more in recent years.
For City, the Premier League title is at stake with Guardiola's men needing to win their remaining four matches to be sure of becoming the first side since United a decade ago to retain the title.
Those days of dominance are long gone for the Red Devils with just a place in the top four and Champions League qualification their target this season.
United, sixth in the standings, will also have to restore some sense of pride after a 4-0 thrashing at Everton last Sunday.
Ahead of today's Manchester derby in the Premier League, Guardiola said: "This club (City) in the last decade grew a lot, it's not scary any more to go to Old Trafford, but we have to play at our best.
"Four games left and we have to win our four games to retain the title. It is not an easy place to go but, at the same time, it is a nice place to go.
"We know exactly what we have to do and we're going to go there to do a big game.
"It's true that we've done better than them over the last three years, but it is about winning titles, not beating United."
Â
Â
Â
Should City fail to win at Old Trafford, Liverpool - historically United's fiercest rivals - will be just three games away from a first league title in 29 years.
The Reds have already set their highest ever points tally in the Premier League era of 88 to lead City by two points.
However, Guardiola's men have a game in hand and, should they move top once more with a win today, they would just need to see off Burnley, Leicester and Brighton to guarantee the title.
City could not have picked a better possible time to face United, but Guardiola also insisted that he is not getting carried away by their rivals' poor form of late.
"I expect the best United tomorrow, I am sure. They are proud. Prepare the game as always, their strong points, their weak points and try to win the game," the City manager added.
"It is a derby and, all the times we play against United, the derbies are always special games and the players do their best for the fans and the club."
The Spaniard also expressed his support for United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, saying that managers do not have it easy when things do not go their way.
"I am close to Solskjaer, I understand his position perfectly," he added. "I understand his position because it happens to all the managers around the world.
"It is the reality, we have to accept it. If not, stay at home. I understand him perfectly and I am with him."

BERN (REUTERS) - Two goals from striker Guillaume Hoarau led Young Boys to a shock 2-1 Champions League win over already-qualified Juventus on Wednesday after Ronaldo missed several chances for the Serie A side and Paulo Dybala had a stoppage-time goal disallowed.
Dybala, who had pulled Juventus back into the game with a goal in the 80th minute, thought he had equalised with a long-range shot, but it was chalked off for offside when Ronaldo leapt at the ball in front of goalkeeper Marco Woelfli but did not make contact.
Juventus finished top of Group H despite the defeat after Manchester United also lost to Valencia. The Swiss side finished bottom despite notching their first-ever win in the Champions League group stage.
Hoarau opened the scoring with a penalty on the half hour and struck again in the 68th minute in a match which will long be remembered by the Swiss club.

Football: Man United game is 'like a final', says Chelsea's Pedro
LONDON (Reuters) - Chelsea's crucial Premier League clash at Manchester United on Sunday (April 28) is "like a final" for the London club as both sides seek a top-four Premier League finish, winger Pedro has said.
Chelsea are currently fourth in the standings with 67 points, three points ahead of Manchester United.
With Arsenal separating the two clubs in fifth place with 66 points, neither side can afford to drop points with three league games to go.
"It is like a final for us," Pedro told Sky Sports. "It is so important to reach the top four. We need to win in Manchester but we know it is difficult to play there.
"They have very good players and are a very good team.
"Maybe they are not in a very good moment, or in very good form, but we need to fight together to win this game."
However, Chelsea are yet to win away at a top six club this season. They have lost four games, conceding 13 goals and scoring only one, and face a United side hurting from a 2-0 midweek humbling at the hands of neighbours Manchester City.
Â
Â
Maurizio Sarri's side were also handed a blow when impressive young winger Callum Hudson-Odoi ruptured his Achilles in the 2-2 draw with Burnley, prematurely ending his season.
But Pedro said he was ready to step up.
"It's a pity for us. He (Hudson-Odoi) is a very good young player for us and is important for us," Pedro said.
"I can only hope that he gets well as soon as possible. Now we have to continue without him until the end in these five games.
"I feel good. I might not start on Sunday but the result is the most important thing. I'm so focused on this game, I want to win. It's the only possible result for us."

Football: Liverpool recover from shaky start to beat Palace 4-3
LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Premier League leaders Liverpool recovered from a poor first-half display as they came from behind to beat an impressive Crystal Palace 4-3 in an enthralling clash at Anfield on Saturday (Jan 19).
The win, secured by late goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, moves Juergen Klopp's side a provisional seven points clear of second-placed Manchester City, who face bottom club Huddersfield Town on Sunday.
Palace won at City last month and at times looked as though they could produce another upset but while this was far from vintage Liverpool their prolific strikers helped them avoid a slip-up.
Trailing 1-0 at the break, two Liverpool goals inside the opening eight minutes of the second half changed the momentum of the match.
"The result is massive, we have 60 points now, it's crazy, it's an important number," said Klopp.
"I'm really proud, a few things happened that we don't really need, we're a bit short now on players but we have a few days and need to use the time now for recovery."
Palace, the last team to win at Anfield in the league back in April, 2017, took a shock 34th minute lead, against the run of play, when Andros Townsend slotted home a fine pull-back from Wilfried Zaha.
Liverpool equalised 47 seconds after the interval when the ball looped high into the area where Salah skilfully converted with the outside of his left foot after Virgil van Dijk's long-range effort was blocked.
Suddenly Liverpool were buzzing and it was no surprise when Brazilian Roberto Firmino put them ahead, collecting a pass from Naby Keita and beating veteran Palace keeper Julian Speroni with a slightly deflected low shot.
But the visitors were not about to roll over and they fought back to level at 2-2 in the 65th when James Tomkins was left unattended to head in a Luka Milivojevic corner.
Â
Speroni, Palace's 39-year-old third-choice, then gifted Liverpool a goal when his one-handed waft at a harmless-looking James Milner cross fell for Salah to tap in after 75 minutes.
Salah now has 50 goals in his 72 Premier League appearances and is the current top scorer in the league with 16.
Milner was sent off in the 89th for a second yellow card after a late challenge on Zaha before Mane added the fourth for the hosts with a solo strike in stoppage time.
There was still time for Palace to strike again with Max Meyer beating Alisson Becker with a low shot which the Brazilian keeper would have expected to save.
Liverpool's back line then handled some late pressure from Palace to seal the three points.
"It's a massive relief," said Klopp.
"We knew for different reasons the game would be difficult. Crystal Palace traditionally do well against Liverpool and with the physicality it was clear it would be like the first half was.
"We had to stay positive, being one down is not a massive blow, we just needed to win the second half and did what we had to do," he added.
Hodgson, whose side are hovering just above the relegation zone despite excellent performances against some of the top clubs, said he felt a mixture of pride and disappointment.
"I'm very proud of the team. You know they have extremely good players, you know it will be a hard task and it will require a lot of discipline and we did well to come back to 2-2 and 4-3 at the end after conceding a very unfair goal.
"You need character and personality and good team spirit, people prepared to stick to the game plan even when it's not going your way.
"We knew if we deviated from the plan we could find it very difficult but we stuck to our way of playing and really I should be stood here congratulating the lads on getting something out if it," added the former Liverpool and England manager."

LIVERPOOL BUZZING
MASSIVE RELIEF

Europa League may grant Emery reprieve
LONDON • Arsenal will face Belarusian outfit Bate Borisov after yesterday's Europa League round of 32 draw and Unai Emery knows the tournament may just be his side's best chance of qualifying for next season's Champions League should there be more defensive horror nights like Sunday.
The Gunners' 22-match unbeaten run in all competitions ended after a shock 3-2 Premier League loss against struggling Southampton, falling three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
Right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner, midfielder Granit Xhaka and a half-fit Laurent Koscielny, playing only his second game after seven months out following Achilles surgery, formed a makeshift backline that struggled to cope with the Saints' aerial bombardment.
They conceded three headed goals at St Mary's and the Spaniard conceded afterwards his side had to defend with more composure if they were to clinch a place in the top four to end their two-season Champions League absence.
"If we won't win like today, we cannot be in the top four. Other teams, usually they are winning," he said after a sloppy display capped by an error by goalkeeper Bernd Leno for striker Charlie Austin's 85th-minute winner.
The Arsenal manager, however, refused to blame the one-game suspensions of regular centre-backs Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, as well as the injury to right-back Hector Bellerin, who went off at half-time, for the error-strewn performance.
He said: "We haven't conceded a lot of chances but today, they (Southampton) scored three goals. We need to do some analysis on how we can improve and do better. We need to continue taking responsibility for the 90 minutes."
Â
Â
Â
Bellerin would likely be out for "some weeks" after suffering a calf strain and Emery admitted he might move for players in the January transfer window if Arsenal fall further behind in the top-four race.
He added: "Only if we think the players can't help us with a good performance. January is not a good transfer window for this reason, but we are going to look and the club is working on transfers in January."
However, the club also have a Plan B as winning the Europa League represents a direct route into European football's premier competition and they were given a boost after a comparatively easier draw which also saw the Blues paired with Sweden's Malmo.
The pick of the round was the tie between five-time champions Sevilla and Italian side Lazio. The first legs will be played on Feb 14, with return legs a week later.

Football: Birmingham fan jailed for pitch attack on Villa's Grealish
LONDON (AFP) - A Birmingham fan who punched Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish during a highly-charged derby in the English Championship was jailed for 14 weeks and banned from football stadiums for 10 years on Monday (March 11).
Grealish was attacked by Paul Mitchell in a shocking incident during Sunday's clash between the bitter local rivals at St Andrew's.
Mitchell sprinted onto the pitch in the 10th minute of the derby, punching Grealish from behind and sending him sprawling to the turf.
The 27-year-old was eventually led away by stewards, while the visibly shaken Grealish was able to continue playing and eventually scored Villa's second-half winner.
On Monday, Mitchell pleaded guilty to assault and invading the pitch when he appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court.
As well as his prison sentence and stadium ban, Mitchell was ordered to pay £100 ($178) to Grealish as compensation for the pain, discomfort and shock caused by the assault.
Passing sentence, magistrate Alison Fisher told Mitchell: "This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable - a view shared by your own football club.
Â
Â
"Mr Grealish has stated that he was shocked and scared and feels lucky that it wasn't worse. Players such as Mr Grealish are entitled to protection. We have therefore gone outside of our guidelines in the interests of justice."
Birmingham welcomed Mitchell's sentencing and confirmed he has been banned from their stadium, and from buying tickets for away games, for life.
Another Birmingham fan who tweeted abuse at Grealish has also been banned.
"Birmingham City Football Club welcomes the sentence handed down to Paul Mitchell by Birmingham magistrates today. What he did was unacceptable and has no place in football," a club statement read.
"The club can confirm that Mr Mitchell is banned from our home ground, the St. Andrew's Trillion Trophy Stadium, for life. And nor will he have access to purchase tickets for away games involving Birmingham City Football Club, or have tickets purchased on his behalf.

The 60-year-old Italian said his side were "lucky" to beat City in December when they ended the champions' 21-match unbeaten run with a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
But Sarri said his fourth-placed team are not in the title picture, even though Guardiola said Tottenham, Chelsea or even fifth-placed Manchester United could not be ruled out.
City lead the table on goal difference from Liverpool, with both sides 12 points clear of Chelsea.
"I think we will be able to fight for the top four this season. No more, I think," Sarri said at his pre-match press conference on Friday (Feb 8) ahead of the trip to the Etihad Stadium.
"We can win something of course, but in the Premier League there is a fight between Liverpool and Man City. At the moment Man City is the best team in Europe."
Sarri was also asked again about Eden Hazard, saying he wanted the Belgium forward to be "happy" wherever his future lies as speculation continues to swirl over a potential move.
Hazard this week admitted to having made a decision on his future, with his Chelsea contract expiring in June 2020 and amid repeated links with a move to Real Madrid.
"I speak every day with Eden, but I speak with Eden about his position on the pitch," said Sarri.
"I will be really very happy with him if he will want to stay because in my opinion he's the best in Europe.
"But it's up to him, I think. I want to see him happy. And so, he has to decide."
Sarri has previously suggested he does not expect Hazard's decision to be known until the end of the season.
The Chelsea boss and Guardiola share a mutual admiration for their similar playing styles, but Sarri said they tend to pick former AC Milan boss Arrigo Sacchi's brains when they meet socially rather than sharing their own secrets.
"We have a good relationship. Very, very good," Sarri said.
"Usually during the summer we have dinner together. I hope he speaks very well about me as a coach, as a friend.
"Usually we learn from Arrigo Sacchi. Because Arrigo is always with us. So it's very interesting to speak to Arrigo."
