Football: Liverpool open up six-point lead as Man City lose again at Leicester

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool moved six points clear at the top of the Premier League as the leaders eased past Newcastle 4-0 at Anfield and Manchester City were beaten for the second time in five days, 2-1 at Leicester.
Tottenham leapfrog City into second after thrashing Bournemouth 5-0, while Manchester United's perfect start under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continued with Paul Pogba scoring twice in a 3-1 win over Huddersfield.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has tried in recent days to stress that it is still far too early for his side to be talking of ending a near three-decade wait to win the title in December.
However, another routine win and a 12th clean sheet in 19 Premier League games will do little to dampen expectations ahead of a huge week for Liverpool with Arsenal visiting Anfield on Saturday before a visit to City on Jan 3.
"We play City soon - if I was them I would think there is only four points because we still have to play them, then we play Arsenal before then as well," said Klopp.
"The only thing that matters to us is the performance and keeping that level of performance. It's good but that's all. Tottenham are flying - they had a difficult summer but they are doing brilliant."
After a slow start Liverpool went in front through an unlikely source when Dejan Lovren volleyed home after 12 minutes.
It was a far more familiar marksman who made the game safe when Mohamed Salah scored from the penalty spot two minutes into the second half to briefly move into a three-way lead as the league's top scorer with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane.
Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho's first Liverpool goal rounded off the scoring.

'FANTASTIC' PEREIRA GOAL

City boss Pep Guardiola made three changes from the side that lost 3-2 to Crystal Palace on Saturday with Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne returning, but even they couldn't prevent a third defeat in four Premier League games.
"We have to accept it, we have to realise that we have to work harder and try to get immediately one good result and get our confidence back," said Guardiola.
Aguero set up Bernardo Silva to give the champions a perfect start, but Marc Albrighton levelled just five minutes later.
City dominated possession throughout, but after Andros Townsend's incredible volley for Palace on Saturday they were hit by another wonder strike when Ricardo Pereira fired home nine minutes from time.
"It was another fantastic goal against us. There are games when your opponents have clear chances and don't score and games when they score goals like this," added Guardiola.
A terrible afternoon for City was compounded late on by a red card for Fabian Delph.

SPURS RUN RIOT AGAIN

As City flounder, Spurs are firing back into the title race as Mauricio Pochettino's men have now scored 11 goals in four days.
"We are in a very good position, but Liverpool and Manchester City are the real contenders," insisted a cautious Pochettino.
"It is one thing to be a point above them, but Manchester City are the reigning champions and Liverpool are doing fantastic. We are between them and there is still a lot of work to do."
Fresh from a 6-2 hammering of Everton, Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura put Tottenham 3-0 up before half-time at Wembley.
Kane then got his goal just after the hour mark before Son recorded his second double in as many games.
Pogba was again to the fore as Solskjaer's dream start continued unabated in his first outing in charge at Old Trafford.
Nemanja Matic tapped home from close range to give the hosts a half-time advantage.
Pogba provided three assists on his return to the starting line-up in a 5-1 win at Cardiff at the weekend after being benched towards the end of Jose Mourinho's reign.
And the French World Cup winner showed the goalscoring threat he also poses from midfield by striking twice in 14 minutes as United moved back to within five points of the top four.
"This is Manchester United. When you score a first, you want a second. When you score a second, you want a third," said Solskjaer, who wants United to take advantage of upcoming games with Bournemouth and Newcastle.
"You need momentum. The next two games will be massive for us. Coming into those games with confidence is great."
Everton bounced back from their Tottenham thrashing by inflicting similar punishment on Burnley with a 5-1 victory at Turf Moor.
At the bottom Cardiff moved three points clear of the relegation zone by holding out for a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.
But Fulham remain rooted in the bottom three as Wolves struck late to secure a share of the points in a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.

Football: Ghana President forces Asamoah Gyan out of 24-hour retirement for Africa Cup of Nations

(THE GUARDIAN) - Asamoah Gyan has made a rapid U-turn on his decision to retire from Ghana duty and will now play at the Africa Cup of Nations, after being told by the nation's President that it is "in the national interest" that he reconsiders.
"A presidential request is one that cannot be disregarded," said the former Sunderland striker in a statement. "I have taken the request of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in good faith and will make myself available for selection by coach Kwasi Appiah to help win the Afcon trophy."
Gyan turned his back on the team only 24 hours earlier after reportedly being dropped as captain but Mr Akufo-Addo was concerned that Gyan's decision had caused such uproar among the Ghanaian public that he personally contacted the striker and used his influence to change his mind.
"President Akufo-Addo spoke on the telephone with Asamoah Gyan, and informed him of the considerable national disquiet over his decision to retire from the Black Stars," the spokesman for the president, Eugene Arhin, said in a statement.
"The President urged him, in the national interest, to rescind his decision to retire from the Black Stars, and make himself available for selection by coach Kwasi Appiah."
Having said on Tuesday (May 21) he was retiring to avoid fuelling "the purported undermining the country has seen under my captaincy", Gyan's love for the national team appears to have been rekindled after Akufo-Addo's telephone call.
"My desire to help Ghana end the over three-decade long wait to annex the Afcon trophy still burns strong, and I remain committed to serving this great nation and the people of Ghana," said the 33-year-old.
Gyan, who played in three World Cups, is Ghana's record scorer with 51 goals in 106 appearances and currently plays for Kayserispor in Turkey. It is unclear whether he will still have the captaincy at the Africa Cup of Nations or, as was widely reported in Ghana, it will be handed to André Ayew.

Football: Aubameyang brace gives Arsenal win over Burnley

LONDON (REUTERS) - Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot to the top of the Premier League scoring charts with two goals in Saturday's (Dec 22) 3-1 home win over struggling Burnley, returning his side to winning ways after two straight defeats.
The Gabon forward gave Arsenal the lead in the 14th minute, knocking in a pass from Sead Kolasinac after a classy ball from Mesut Ozil. He then smashed high into the net in the 48th to complete an impressive counter-attack from Unai Emery's side.
Burnley, 18th in the table and without an away win since September, hit back with a scrappy goal from Ashley Barnes having spurned a good chance to take an unlikely lead at the start of the game when Ashley Westwood was denied by the feet of Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Substitute Alex Iwobi restored Arsenal's two-goal cushion with a simple finish in stoppage-time, helped by another clever move from German playmaker Ozil, who was left out of the team for Wednesday's 2-0 League Cup defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.
Aubameyang's brace moved him on to 12 goals for the season, leapfrogging Liverpool's Mohamed Salah as the league's top scorer and taking fifth-placed Arsenal on to 37 points, level with Chelsea who play Leicester City later.
Arsenal's 22-game unbeaten run in all competitions was halted on Sunday with a 3-2 defeat at Southampton and they were knocked out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage with a painful home loss to north London neighbours Tottenham.
They were given little respite from a highly physical Burnley side but ultimately had too much quality for Sean Dyche's side.
"We expected it to be tough, we prepared the match thinking about what they would do, that they would be strong in the air, so we made sure we won the duels and we also wanted to impose our game plan," Arsenal coach Emery told reporters.
"We could not play as we wanted to for 90 minutes but we are very happy with the victory. Physicality is part of football, you always need to be strong as well as impose your quality, and our victory today is a consequence of this."
Burnley coach Dyche credited his team for causing Arsenal problems, but cursed their own defensive vulnerabilities.
"Overall, I was pleased with the performance, especially the mentality to come here and take on the game," he said.
"A couple of their goals were soft, but attacking-wise we were a problem today for them. We could have got something but we know even with a good performance you can't afford to give away goals like the two we let in."

Football: Portugal draw a blank against Ukraine on Ronaldo's return

LISBON (REUTERS) - Defending champions Portugal were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Ukraine in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier on Friday (March 22) as Cristiano Ronaldo returned to the team for the first time since the World Cup.
Ukraine's veteran goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov kept Portugal at bay with several fine saves in the first hour before the hosts ran out of ideas in the Group B game.
Portugal had an early goal chalked off when William Carvalho's header was ruled offside and defender Pepe then produced an impressive volley which the 34-year-old Pyatov did well to turn over.
Ronaldo, left out of the Nations Cup matches in the autumn by mutual consent with coach Fernando Santos, then sprang into action as he twice got free on the left.
First he cut inside his marker and produced a snapshot which Pyatov saved with his legs and shortly afterwards he opted to go outside Serhiy Kryvtsov and fired in a low, left-foot shot which the goalkeeper again stopped.
The Ukraine captain saved his best for the 56th minute when he brilliantly turned away Andre Silva's goalbound shot with a one-handed save.
With Bernardo Silva repeatedly dribbling into dead-ends, Portugal began to lose composure as both Joao Cancelo and Ronaldo sent wayward crosses straight into touch.

Portugal then had a let off when Rui Patricio blocked Yevhen Konoplyanka's shot - Ukraine's only effort on target in the match - and debutant Junior Moraes saw his shot from the rebound blocked.
A late chance went begging for Portugal when substitute Rafa Silva missed his kick after a low Ronaldo cross found him in the area.

Football: Fulham stun Bournemouth in Howe's 500th game as a manager

BOURNEMOUTH, England (REUTERS) - Relegated Fulham ruined Eddie Howe's 500th game as a manager by beating Bournemouth 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday (April 20) to secure their first away Premier League win of the season.
Aleksandar Mitrovic scored the only goal from the penalty spot after 53 minutes after the striker had been brought down by a careless challenge from Jack Simpson.
The defender would never have been on the pitch had it not been for a bizarre series of injuries as Adam Smith was hurt in the warm-up and his replacement Junior Stanislaus went off after 23 minutes.
The Cherries still started strongly enough with Josh King side-footing over from close range after fine work from Ryan Fraser, who was also denied by a fine save from keeper Sergio Rico.
But the visitors showed great resilience to stay on level terms before showing more of a threat themselves with Denis Odoi's header forcing a fine save from 39-year-old keeper Artur Boruc.
With Ryan Babel heading over when free on goal, the visitors continued to impress although Mitrovic was fortunate to stay on the pitch after clashing with Nathan Ake.
The result gave Fulham, who beat Everton last week, their first back-to-back Premier League wins since April 2014. I Mitrovic paid tribute to Fulham's long-suffering fans, who had seen them take just two points on the road all season.
"It was unbelievable; since we were relegated everywhere we go our stand is full - we have the best fans in the world, we really appreciate this," said the striker.
"This season they were world class and deserve more. We need to keep fighting, playing for us, playing for them, for the club.
"We showed we can play in the Premier League. Of course we are really disappointed."

Football: Solskjaer wants more than caretaker role after 100 per cent start with Man United

LONDON (REUTERS) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reiterated how he wants to be more than a caretaker manager at Manchester United after matching a venerable feat only ever performed at the club by its most revered patriarch - the late, great Matt Busby.
"Of course I won't, I don't want to," said the ever-smiling Norwegian on Wednesday (Jan 2), when asked after United's 2-0 win at Newcastle United whether he would want to leave Old Trafford in May at the end of his planned interim spell.
And after a startling opening to his reign following Jose Mourinho's sacking continued with a fourth successive win - something only Busby, in 1946, could boast among United managers - he is making a compelling application for the full-time role.
Sounding uncannily like his old insatiable United mentor Alex Ferguson, the former striker reckoned he had already consigned to history the idea of having emulated Busby, who went on to win a fifth consecutive game at the infancy of his epic reign.
"That will be in the books, but it's nothing that I'm thinking of," said Solskjaer.
"I'm just thinking about the next game because if you win four, you can win another four at this club. That's the challenge and that's the standard that we're known for.
"The gaffer (Ferguson) used to challenge us on them and of course when we've won four, you can go onto the next four and think about them."
There has been much media speculation that United want Mourinho's permanent replacement next season to be Juventus' Massimiliano Allegri but if he carries on in his current vein, Solskjaer could make life very awkward for the club hierarchy.
For, with United looking reinvigorated and Solskjaer reprising the old Midas touch that famously saw him come off the bench against Bayern Munich to win the Champions League for United in 1999, he must still know the impossible is possible.
On Wednesday, the one-time 'super sub' even showed he still had the knack of recognising exactly the time to strike when he brought on Romelu Lukaku at 0-0 and saw the Belgian score with his first touch within 38 seconds.
Asked if it gave him particular pleasure that Lukaku should strike, gobbling up the rebound after Marcus Rashford's free kick had been spilled, he shrugged that it had not.
"No, I just felt it was time to put Rom and Alexis (Sanchez) on (as substitutes) and of course it was a great hit by Marcus and Romelu does his job as a striker to be following in on the rebound."
Once again, he enthused about how much he was enjoying his role and said there would be space in his United revolution for both the rejuvenated Rashford, who scored the second, and Lukaku to shine.
"It's such a great bunch of players, a fantastic atmosphere, but it's 'the next game, it's the next game, it's the next game' and I'm doing my job as long as I'm here," he said.
If he is to make it five league wins on the trot, like Busby managed back in 1946, Solskjaer's first major test will come when United face Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Jan 13.

Football: Liverpool's TV income may top record 250 million after Champions League victory

LONDON (BLOOMBERG) - Liverpool's victory over Tottenham Hotspur to take the Champions League title on Saturday (June 1) will let the club make another claim: It'll become the first global football team to bring in more than £250 million (S$433.7 million) in a season from broadcast income.
The estimate, according to analyst Swiss Ramble, means the English club's overall revenue is edging closer to its Spanish rivals, Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as Manchester United - the biggest sales generators among European football teams.
Swiss Ramble, an anonymous blogger who keeps a forensic score of football clubs' finances, tweeted a breakdown of club revenue on Monday, updating figures after Liverpool's 2-0 win. The data show broadcast income of £251 million in the 2018/2019 season for Liverpool, with Tottenham at £235.2 million and Manchester City and Manchester United following behind.
Uefa, the regulatory body for the top football competitions in Europe, will not release the final figures for a few weeks. A spokesman for Liverpool declined to comment.
Broadcast revenue for teams has been climbing as intense competition for TV rights sold by leagues has steadily boosted their value. The previous record was held by Liverpool and Real Madrid at £222.6 million in the 2017/2018 season, according to Deloitte LLP partner Dan Jones.
Liverpool came seventh last year among European clubs in Deloitte's Football Money League table, which ranks football teams in terms of their annual revenue. Largely due to the strength of the Premier League's broadcast deals, six English clubs rank in Europe's top 10. But they all come behind Spain's Real Madrid and Barcelona, with revenue totalling €750.9 million (S$1.15 billion) and €690.4 million, respectively.
Liverpool "will surely be targeting the top five" this year, Jones said. "Domestic television revenues are up 8 per cent for the next three-year round, so that will help."

Liverpool has been a sound investment for American businessman John Henry, the principal owner of Fenway Sports Group, which also owns the Boston Red Sox. Fenway Sports bought Liverpool for about US$500 million (S$684.57 million) in 2010 and the club had an enterprise value of around US$2.4 billion at the start of 2019, according to KPMG.

Football: Aston Villa meet Derby in play-off battle for 170 million prize

LONDON (REUTERS) - Aston Villa face Derby County in the Championship play-off final on Monday (May 27) with both clubs desperate for a return to the Premier League in a game billed as the richest in world football with at least £170 million (S$297 million) on the line.
Villa have been out of the top flight for three seasons while Derby have been stuck in the second tier of English football since relegation in 2008.
A 10-match winning streak during the run-in propelled Dean Smith's Villa into the playoffs where they got past West Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion.
"The key thing is momentum," said former Brentford manager Smith, who took over from Steve Bruce at Villa Park in October. "I feel we have a lot of that going into it (the final), given our run towards the end of the season and our two dominant play-off games. We can take it into the final."
Derby produced a brilliant performance with a 4-2 win over Leeds United in their play-off second leg at Elland Road earning them a place at Wembley.
Derby manager Frank Lampard, the former Chelsea and England midfielder who is in his first season as a manager, believes his team are well suited for the high-pressure encounter.
"The 'Cup' football feeling has been good for us. We've had to get results for a while now, going back to probably the QPR game (a 2-0 home win on April 22). We'll need big game mentality on Monday," he said.
Lampard is up against his former club and international team-mate John Terry, who is Smith's assistant at Villa.
The two clubs have proud histories. Seven-time English champions Villa were European Cup winners in 1982, while Derby were twice English champions in the 1970s.
Champions Norwich City and runners-up Sheffield United have already secured promotion to the top flight and the rewards for Villa and Derby joining them are eye-watering.
According to analysis from Deloitte's Sports Business Group, promotion will bring an increase in revenue of at least £170 million, rising to a minimum of £300 million if the play-off winners avoid relegation in their first season.
The £170 million includes £95 million in revenue from playing in the Premier League in 2019-20, mostly from broadcast and commercial revenue, and a total of £75 million in parachute payments in 2020-21 and 2021-22 if they go straight down.
However, the £170 million rises to at least £300 million if they survive their first season in the top flight.

Magic of the FA Cup alive and well

Magic of the FA Cup alive and well

LONDON • Whoever said the magic of the FA Cup was dead should have paid a visit to Kingsmeadow, The Den and the New Meadow on Saturday.
While the competition has taken a backseat to the Premier League and the Champions League in recent years, it still represents the perfect opportunity for English football's lesser lights to have their day in the sun.
And shine they did as AFC Wimbledon and Millwall humbled their top-tier opponents in the fourth round of the FA Cup in raucous post-game scenes at their respective home grounds.
Wimbledon revived memories of their "Crazy Gang" heyday in the late 80s, knocking West Ham out with a 4-2 win at Kingsmeadow.
The shock loss to Wimbledon, who are rock-bottom in League One, left Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini "ashamed" of his players.
He told reporters after his side went 3-0 down before the break: "Was I angry at half-time? Yes of course.
"I didn't expect it, the attitude, playing against a team that sits two divisions below us but, in football, you can lose in two or three balls.
"They started the way we needed to start and, when you have such high pace with the quality of the players... We didn't have the same level."
Wimbledon defender Toby Sibbick, who was born 11 years after the club won the 1988 FA Cup, their only major silverware - told BT Sport scoring the fourth goal had been "one of the highlights for me".
He added: "I thought the boys were excellent. It's a great win, look at the fans, this is what it's about."
Everton were also stunned by Championship strugglers Millwall 3-2 but, unlike Pellegrini, Marco Silva sought to deflect blame by pinning the defeat on the lack of a Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
The Toffees felt aggrieved as their opponents' second goal appeared to go in off the arm of Jake Cooper.
To make matters worse, the strike was shown on a big screen in the stadium immediately afterwards, with the handball obvious to everyone watching at The Den.
Premier League grounds hosting FA Cup ties are using VAR this season but the technology was not installed at Millwall - a situation the Everton manager said was unfair.
Claiming "it does not make sense", the Portuguese bemoaned: "If we are to be fair with all the clubs, you have to be fair with the competition and you also have to do it for all the games.
"Now we go home with big frustration. I am not here just to be angry with the referee but it is true.
"It was a clear handball in the moment. The players, they saw and went to speak with the assistant and thousands of people saw (it) on the big screen."
Shrewsbury Town nearly made it a trio of upsets on a day of surprises and it took an added-time equaliser from Wolves' Matt Doherty to deny them a place in the fifth round.
The League One outfit were leading 2-0 after 70 minutes at New Meadow and Shrewsbury manager Sam Ricketts admitted to "real mixed emotions" after Nuno Espirito Santo's men forced a replay.
He told the BBC: "I base myself on performances and that was very, very good, but I am disappointed not to win the game."

Football: Emotional Diego Godin to leave Atletico Madrid after nine-year stay

MADRID (REUTERS) - Atletico Madrid captain Diego Godin is leaving the club after nine years when his contract expires in June, the Uruguayan defender said at a news conference on Tuesday (May 7), fighting to hold back tears.
Godin, 33, has played 387 times for Atletico since joining from Villarreal in 2010, scoring 27 goals - including famously clinching the club's first LaLiga title in 18 years with a header in a 1-1 draw at Barcelona in 2014.
Godin did not say where he is going, but numerous Spanish media have reported that he is on his way to Italian Serie A club Inter Milan.
"I'm a little nervous, much more than I am before a game, but I have called everyone here to inform you that these are my final days at the club," Godin said.
Atletico president Enrique Cerezo added: "We are here to say goodbye to an Atletico legend. You have been a vital part of this great era for the club, with your efforts and your goals, like the one which gave us the title at the Nou Camp.
"You have fought in a thousand battles and defended the club's shirt in every game and you have worn the captain's armband.
"Wherever you end up, Atletico wishes you a lot of luck. Atletico is your family, the Wanda Metropolitano is your home."

In addition to the LaLiga triumph, Godin won two Europa League titles, one Copa del Rey, one Spanish Super Cup and three Uefa Super Cups with Atletico as well as reaching the 2014 and 2016 Champions League finals, only to lose both times to Real.
Godin's departure will leave another hole in Atletico's defence, with France international Lucas Hernandez already agreeing to join Bayern Munich in June after they paid his €80 million (S$ 122 million) release clause.

Relegation clouded by Sala tragedy: Warnock

LONDON • Cardiff City's relegation fate was sealed on Saturday, but manager Neil Warnock felt that losing their Premier League status paled in comparison with the loss felt by the death of Emiliano Sala in January.
The Argentinian striker, who is the club's record signing at £15 million (S$26.9 million), died after his plane crashed in the English Channel, just days before he was set to make his debut against Arsenal.
Warnock, who saw his side go down with a game to go following their 3-2 home defeat by Crystal Palace, claimed the tragedy "puts it into perspective".
He said: "Yes, we've got relegated, but life is far more important. You can't plan for something like that and I didn't think it would affect the players in the way it did.
"I did think he would score 10 or 15 goals, he was the type we needed. It wasn't to be."
It is the third time the 70-year-old has suffered relegation from the top flight, with previous clubs Notts County and Sheffield United dropping a division in 1992 and 2007 respectively.
But Warnock, who has yet to confirm whether he will stay at the Welsh club after their second top-flight relegation in five years, was adamant his latest setback was different, insisting the home fans were proud of what his players had achieved as "they know we've given it our best".

PUTTING FOOTBALL INTO PERSPECTIVE
Yes, we've got relegated, but life is far more important. You can't plan for something like that.
NEIL WARNOCK, Cardiff manager, lamenting Emiliano Sala's death.

He added: "For a while, it looked like the remarkable resilience showed by everyone at the club following the tragedy might bring its own reward when something approaching normality returned.
"But, no matter what spirit the players showed, deficiencies in quality were clear.
"They (the fans) knew when I took over the club was in a mess, it's been reborn - everybody is singing from the same hymn sheet.
The Bluebirds boss also highlighted their 2-1 home loss to Chelsea in March as the turning point, admitting the "result killed us that night in the dressing room".
Referencing the moment defender Cesar Azpilicueta scored an offside equaliser six minutes from time, he said: "It was really low that night. They have kept fighting, so I have no complaints.
"The problems we have had to put up with throughout the season, I have nothing but praise for everybody. It makes such a difference when you hear the crowd."

Aguero inches City closer to the title

Aguero inches City closer to the title

LONDON • Thirty-six games in, the Premier League title race did stray dangerously close to becoming an ordeal for Manchester City.
For over an hour yesterday, it had looked as though they might blink in their staring contest with Liverpool. Something had to give and Pep Guardiola's players certainly toyed with the emotions of their supporters during those passages of play when they lacked their usual sureness of touch.
Except, this is the team whose fans like to sing how they will "fight to the end" and, lest it be forgotten, once won the league with the final kick of the season back in 2012.
City even have a bar at the Etihad called "The 93:20" to commemorate Sergio Aguero's contribution on that occasion - he scored the winner then - and seven years on, the Argentina striker is still delivering vital goals and showing he remains the man for the big occasion.
His 63rd-minute strike at Turf Moor meant he joins Alan Shearer as the only two players in the Premier League era to score 20 times or more in six different seasons.
City have now won 12 consecutive league games, restoring their one-point lead over Liverpool.

  • 20

  • Sergio Aguero is the second player in Premier League history to score more than 20 goals in five straight seasons, after Arsenal's Thierry Henry (2002 to 2006).

If they can extend that sequence to 14 in their last two games by beating Leicester at home and then Brighton away, there will be nothing Jurgen Klopp and his players can do about it.
Aguero's winner against Burnley was not without drama. He had held off James Tarkowski in the box before striking at goal.
Fellow defender Matthew Lowton blocked the ball on the line and, briefly, play carried on.
But there was a reason why referee Paul Tierney felt a buzz on his wristband. It was the goal-line technology letting him know that the momentum of the ball had taken it over the line. Twenty-nine millimetres, to be precise.
Afterwards, Aguero cheekily referenced how "today I was happy about the technology" in contrast to how the Video Assistant Referee had denied them passage to the Champions League semi-finals almost two weeks ago. He added: "I am very happy with the goal because in the first half, we had a lot of chances and now we have a week to prepare for the next games."
For the first time in months, City's elimination from the Champions League means they will crucially have a free midweek to prepare for those key matches.
By contrast, Liverpool must travel to Newcastle next weekend, either side of the two legs of their Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, before hosting Wolves on May 12.
Sean Dyche's side knew before kick-off they were mathematically certain of Premier League survival, yet played as if they, too, were fighting for the title.
Burnley were tough, obdurate opponents and City did not always look like champions-in-waiting, particularly in the first half when there even a few "Ole" chants from the home supporters during their periods of possession.
But, after the break, the visitors subjected their opponents to a period of concerted pressure and ought to have had a penalty when Ashley Barnes jutted out his arm to stop Bernardo Silva's shot.
With only one goal in it, there was always a certain amount of danger for the away team, yet they held on and two more wins will be enough for City to become the first team to retain the title since Manchester United in 2009.

Football: Mourinho rejects offers, reveals fragile ego at United
LONDON • Jose Mourinho revealed that he has turned down three job offers since being sacked by Manchester United last month, adding he was happy to bide his time before taking on his next challenge.
Speaking in his role as a pundit for broadcaster beIN Sports during the Asian Cup on Saturday, the Portuguese also said rivals Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp enjoyed more support at their clubs.
"I am happy with these three weeks, I am happy with this experience and I am going to have other experiences that normally I cannot have," Mourinho said.
"But I know me and, I know by the end of March, I will be struggling with my happiness.
"I will analyse things, I don't like to speak about it. But I've refused already three options because I didn't feel that it is what I want, so I'm going to be calm in this aspect."
At United, Mourinho was left frustrated in the close-season transfer window when Liverpool, in particular, strengthened markedly and Manchester City added to a squad already deep in quality.
"At Man City in the first season, Guardiola was not a champion. In the second season, Pep made great decisions, but those that were supported. In the same summer, he sold four full-backs and bought four backs.
"At Liverpool, how many players were there before Jurgen Klopp arrived? If you are a manager and you choose the players to follow your idea, that's one thing.
"The other thing is when you are not able to do that."
Mourinho also claimed that modern footballers have such fragile egos that one United player asked not to be criticised in front of his team-mates.
"When I coach on the pitch, I like to see myself free because I am in family and I want to be able to criticise everyone," he said.
"I had one player say, he was very polite and not confrontational, 'Please, when you criticise me, can you do it in private?'.
"I said why and he said, 'Because it's my stature in front of the other players, when you criticise me I don't feel comfortable'.
"He was one of the top players of his generation. Nowadays you have to be very smart in the way you read your players and their personalities."

Veterans can steer PSG to Champions League title: Alves

Veterans can steer PSG to Champions League title: Alves

PARIS • Dani Alves jokes that Paris Saint-Germain are still Champions League "virgins", but the presence of players like the decorated Brazil defender only helps to make them more credible contenders to win their maiden European Cup.
In a glittering career, he has won the Champions League three times with Barcelona, while reaching another final with Juventus.
Alves is a veteran now, his 36th birthday falling several weeks before this season's final, but he is conscious of what players like him and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, 41, can add to a PSG squad comprising football's two most expensive players in Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.
"We know how to win and how to lose. What we try to transmit to the others is that either we all go together in the same direction, or we leave the doors open to a defeat," Alves told Agence France-Presse.
He was speaking ahead of the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at home to Manchester United today.
The mood is relaxed and confidence is high at the Parc des Princes as Thomas Tuchel's players seek to build on their 2-0 first-leg win last month, achieved without Neymar and Edinson Cavani.
While the former has been ruled out through injury and the latter might be fit to make only the bench, Alves believes PSG have proven they can cope with their absences.
"This is not a competition that depends on only one player having a spectacular day," he said.
"When you have experienced players, you don't tremble when it comes to playing in a hostile atmosphere, or under pressure."
In his debut campaign for the club last season, PSG were knocked out at this stage by Real Madrid, the first time Alves had not been involved in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in a decade.
It was a disappointment for the French champions and their Qatari owners, and talk had been rife over a divided dressing room, but Alves insisted there is an "incredible atmosphere" under Tuchel.
He said: "We are lucky this year to have a management team that is liked, respected by everyone. Everything has been put in place to make this a great year for us."
But, while PSG do not want to just get past United - they want to go beyond the last eight, something they have not managed since the Qatari takeover in 2011 - they are still haunted by the ghosts of their collapse at the Nou Camp two years ago despite winning the first leg 4-0.
Reflecting on that humiliation when they lost 6-1 to Barcelona in the second leg, Tuchel said: "It's not good to play with fear, but it's not good to play with too much confidence either.
"We have guys who played in Barcelona, who have that experience. We can't control the result, you never can in football, but we can control our performance."

Reds fired up for run-in

LONDON • With seven Premier League matches left for Liverpool in the season, one would have expected Jurgen Klopp to deliver grand, rousing speeches when his players returned from the international break.
There were none. Instead, it was right down to business at Melwood immediately and the manager even oversaw a double training session on Tuesday.
The message was clear: the German merely emphasised to everyone that they will all be needed over the coming weeks in the Premier League title race and the Champions League.
The true test for Klopp and Liverpool's strength in depth has now come and the arrival of Tottenham today at Anfield presents the first of seven domestic examinations, plus up to five more in Europe. These fixtures demand that the pace has to be picked up immediately.
"The good thing is, do I have to talk about motivation with the boys? Of course not. They are all on fire," Klopp said at a press conference on Friday.
"We had a big training squad. There were 21 players and only two kids involved and usually we have five or six kids involved.

  • Liverpool have lost only one of their past 13 league and Cup games against Tottenham, winning eight of those matches.

"It means they are coming back fighting for minutes on the pitch. It's all there what you need but, on the other hand, you need to be stable and clear and not going nuts, not trying too hard.
"When we have the ball, we try to create a chance, we try to score. When we don't have the ball, then we defend with all we have. The things you did that brought you here, you have to do it again."
History suggests that he will need everybody indeed.
It was on March 31 last year when Liverpool lost Adam Lallana until the final fortnight of the campaign with a hamstring problem. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain then suffered a knee injury from which he continues to recover from and Joe Gomez required ankle surgery that would end his season prematurely.
The strain on resources, coupled with the prioritising of Europe where they went all the way to the Champions League final only to lose to Real Madrid, meant that Dominic Solanke played 219 minutes in the closing weeks, Danny Ings (243), Ragnar Klavan (294), Nathaniel Clyne (184), Alberto Moreno (186) and Ben Woodburn (six).
Liverpool's league record over the final seven games last term read: won three, drawn three, lost one and they clinched a top-four spot only on the final weekend.
It is revealing that Solanke, Ings, Klavan and Clyne have all left, Woodburn would still be on loan at Sheffield United if that switch had worked out and Moreno will depart at the end of the campaign.
In their place, Liverpool have Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi as back-up strikers, Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and, soon, Gomez all vying to partner Virgil van Dijk, while Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri shadow a plethora of midfielders.
While Manchester City boast greater resources, the difference in squad strength between the top two does not feel like a chasm.
Significantly, City's 2-0 win at Fulham yesterday began a crazy sequence of nine matches up to April 28 for Pep Guardiola's side.
Liverpool play seven times and will hope that if their rivals stumble, it is in the league.
Regardless of what happens, van Dijk has told his teammates to have "no regrets" as they try to deliver a first league title in 29 years.
"The most important thing is to enjoy it. You hope to be in this kind of position - challenging for the Premier League title, being as far as we are in the Champions League now," the Dutchman said.
"I think the ultimate thing would be winning something with Liverpool and we still have a chance to win it. So let's just go for it."

Klopp sees no need to panic

LONDON • Liverpool have lost their two games this year but manager Jurgen Klopp believes there is no reason to panic, with his side still four points ahead at the top of the Premier League.
The Reds lost 2-1 to second-placed Manchester City, who are on 50 points, before they lost to Wolves by the same scoreline on Monday in the FA Cup third round.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of today's league trip to Brighton, Klopp said: "So far our season has been really good and now we need to carry on.
"Two weeks ago everyone was so excited about the distance between (us and City). Now we have lost two games, not nice but not a real problem."
Criticism of his decision to make nine changes for Wolves is still fresh in his ears, as the Reds have now been eliminated from both domestic Cup competitions at the first hurdle. But that will be a small price to pay should they land a first league title since 1990.
When asked if there is an advantage now that they can fully focus on the league, Klopp said: "It's my preferred rhythm (having just one domestic game a week).
"It's our situation, it's not that we decided to go out of the Cups. We had to make changes (and play second-string players) because of the intensity of the games."

He called Brighton a good team, adding: "(Lewis) Dunk and (Shane) Duffy are outstanding centre-halves. (Davy) Propper is playing his best season in England and is a good pairing with (Dale) Stephens."
After that, they have another three very winnable home games against Leicester, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth plus a trip to West Ham before facing Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Those five games provide them with a perfect platform to at least consolidate their lead, after the disappointment of losing their unbeaten league record to City to give the champions a foothold back in the title race.
Klopp will recall most of his key players who skipped FA Cup duty, but an injury to Dejan Lovren leaves him short of options at centre-back with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip also sidelined. Fabinho may have to deputise in defence once more alongside the calming presence of Virgil van Dijk.
Brighton, with 26 points, are well-placed to achieve their principal target of avoiding relegation with a 10-point cushion above the drop zone, thanks in large part to a strong home record.
Only Tottenham and Chelsea have been victorious in 10 league games at the Amex Stadium. But Brighton manager Chris Hughton knows he has a tough task.
"I think he (Klopp) has been outstanding. This season shows what a great job he's done. Liverpool are better prepared and it's all led by him," he said.
