Football: Sterling hits hat-trick as England thrash Czech Republic

LONDON (AFP) - Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick as England started what they hope is a road back to Wembley for the Euro 2020 final with a comprehensive 5-0 win over the Czech Republic to open their qualifying campaign.
Harry Kane was also on target from the penalty spot as England carried the momentum from a run to the World Cup semi-finals and qualification for the last four of the Nations League into the Euro qualifiers.
England have stormed to the top of qualifying Group A ahead of Monday's trip to Montenegro, who drew 1-1 at Bulgaria.
Jadon Sancho is one of the new additions to Gareth Southgate's squad since that revival for the Three Lions in Russia and was handed his first competitive international start.
The 18-year-old, who has shone in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund this season, gave England fans further cause for excitement, with his potential added to that of Sterling and Kane coming into their prime.
Sterling had scored just two goals in his first 45 caps, but the Manchester City winger now has five in his last three England games as he begins to come of age on the international stage.

Comfortable England

After a lacklustre start in which the hosts dominated possession without threatening much, one move of genuine quality opened the scoring on 23 minutes and the way to a comfortable night for Southgate's men.

Kane showed his ability is not restricted to finding the net with a wonderful pass inside Filip Novak to free Sancho, who squared for Sterling to tap home on the stretch.
Another burst of inspiration from Sterling made the game safe in first-half stoppage time.
He wriggled around four Czech defenders before a combination of Pavel Kaderabek and Tomas Kalas hauled him down.
Kane maintained his flawless record from the spot for England and scored his 21st international goal, firing his powerful penalty past Jiri Pavlenka despite the Czech stopper getting a hand to it.
The Czechs already had bad memories of Wembley as the scene where they lost the Euro 96 final to Germany in extra-time before this mauling.
Gone are the days where they are contenders to win the Euros, but Jaroslav Silhavy's side did at least spark briefly into life after the break.
Tomas Soucek headed inches wide and David Pavelka forced Jordan Pickford into two routine saves before England went through the gears to give the scoreline a fairer reflection of the gulf between the sides.
Sancho should have scored his first international goal after more good work from Sterling and Kane, but could not force the ball past a desperate challenge from Novak, and Sterling showed Sancho how it is done with a fine curling finish into the top corner just after the hour mark.
However, England's hat-trick hero had luck on his side for his third goal as a huge deflection left Pavlenka in the Czech goal flummoxed.
That was Sterling's final act as he made way for another precociously talented 18-year-old, Callum Hudson-Odoi, to make his international debut, while Declan Rice was also handed his England debut after switching allegiances from the Republic of Ireland.
And Hudson-Odoi had a big part to play in England's fifth as his shot was parried by Pavlenka into the onrushing Kalas, who haplessly turned the ball into his own net.

Football: Five-star Manchester United rediscover their swagger but City are stunned by Crystal Palace

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester City stumbled to the most sensational defeat of the Premier League season on Saturday (Dec 22) before neighbours Manchester United began their brave new world under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a glorious reminder of long-forgotten attacking swagger.
After City’s sensational 3-2 reverse against Crystal Palace at their Etihad fortress, United seemed liberated and re-energised after Jose Mourinho’s midweek sacking as they romped to a 5-1 win at Cardiff City – the first time they have hit five in the league since their golden Alex Ferguson era.
A remarkable 30-metre thunderbolt from Andros Townsend adorned Palace’s remarkable comeback from a goal down in the rain as Pep Guardiola’s champions City saw their 100 percent league home record this season shattered.
So, what recently looked like an imperious title defence now looks problematic as City lie four points behind leaders Liverpool, who had thrown down the gauntlet with a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.
There was more good news for the Reds as fourth-placed Chelsea also squandered their unbeaten home record with a 1-0 defeat by Leicester City.
Arsenal kept up their pursuit in fifth, thanks to a double from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a 3-1 home win over Burnley that put the Gabonese striker top of the league’s goalscoring charts.
After 18 matches, Liverpool are now the only unbeaten side left in England’s top four divisions on 48 points, with City on 44 and Tottenham Hotspur, who visit Everton on Sunday, third on 39. Chelsea and Arsenal both have 37, while United are on 29.

On a remarkable, rain-sodden afternoon at the Etihad, Manchester City, who had lost their season’s unbeaten record at Chelsea two weeks ago, seemed predictably dominant when striding into a first-half lead through Ilkay Gundogan.
But Palace responded quickly with a Jeffrey Schlupp strike and three minutes later a wondrous volley from 30 metres from the mercurial England international Townsend, which will be a contender for goal of the season.
Luka Milivojevic put the visitors further clear with a penalty after the break before Palace survived a late onslaught that saw Kevin De Bruyne score five minutes from time.
“It’s complicated but we fight until the last second. We are in December and we will try and recover and try and win games again,” shrugged Guardiola, conceding that his side needed to “recover mentally and recover physicality”.

UNITED REBORN

In stark contrast, after a traumatic week which saw the end of Mourinho’s two-and-a-half-year reign, Manchester United seemed mentally and physically re-born, playing with verve, pace and attacking intent that reflected the smile of their still fresh-faced caretaker boss and old club hero, Solskjaer.
He was beaming after three minutes when Marcus Rashford’s free kick put United ahead and further goals before halftime from Ander Herrera and Anthony Martial – after a dazzling passing interchange – and a second-half double from Jesse Lingard made it a perfect start for the Norwegian.
United, with Paul Pogba back in the fold, poured forward in a free-spirited manner rarely seen under Mourinho and Lingard’s last-minute goal ensured they netted five in a league match for the first time since Ferguson’s final match in charge in 2013.
Chelsea’s loss at Stamford Bridge seemed almost as unlikely as Manchester City’s with Leicester facing the prospect of a third straight defeat but Jamie Vardy’s first-time finish soon after the break brought much-needed relief for the Foxes’ manager Claude Puel.
At the Emirates Stadium, the predatory Aubameyang took his season-leading tally of league goals to 12 with his double in the win over Burnley, one more than Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
Fulham earned a goalless draw at Newcastle United but remained bottom of the table on 10 points alongside Huddersfield Town, who were beaten 3-1 by a Southampton side that look rejuvenated under new Austrian manager Ralph Hasenhuettl.
Watford moved into seventh place with a 2-0 win at West Ham United, thanks to goals from Troy Deeney and Gerard Deulofeu.

Aubameyang sets sights on Europa title

LONDON • Arsenal were able to count on a team of superheroes as they overturned a two-goal deficit to reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League, but their next opponents are unlikely to allow them the same luxury of drawing on their powers of recovery.
They were yesterday paired with Napoli in the pick of the ties following the draw, with Unai Emery's team playing at the Emirates in the first leg on April 11 before the return leg in Italy a week later.
The winners of that tie will go on to a semi-final clash against the victors of the all-Spanish meeting between LaLiga teams Valencia and Villarreal. Peter Lim-owned Valencia were on their way out before Goncalo Guedes struck a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser against Krasnodar on Thursday to progress 3-2 on aggregate.
Chelsea, Europa League winners in 2013, will fancy their chances of advancing against Czech side Slavia Prague after smashing Dynamo Kiev 5-0 for an 8-0 aggregate win, while Eintracht Frankfurt will next take on Portuguese outfit Benfica.
While Emery's men have arguably a harder path to the May 29 final in Baku, with Napoli currently second in Serie A, the Spaniard feels pressure brings out the best in his team as "the difficult moments give us our best performance".
Speaking after the 3-0 second-leg win over Rennes during which Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang celebrated his brace with a mask from the film Black Panther, he said: "I'm excited (about) this competition.
"It's exciting not only for the possibility to go to the Champions League, but also because it's a title.
"Today, Inter (Milan), Sevilla are out, a big surprise. The last teams, they're all very important, and it's going to be very difficult. We're going to think the same before every match. The next match is the most important for us."
After Arsenal became only the second Europa League side to come back from 3-1 down after Fulham in 2010, Aubameyang tweeted his delight at the draw, claiming he was looking forward to meeting his friends, Napoli defenders Kevin Malcuit and Faouzi Ghoulam.
He also told reporters the mask "represented him", adding: "In Gabon, we call the national team the Panthers."

Heartbreak for Hougang again

Heartbreak for Hougang again

SINGAPORE PREMIER LEAGUE

Tampines Rovers 3
Hougang United 3
Tampines Rovers trounced Hougang United 5-1 at Jalan Besar Stadium on March 3, when Hougang's Justin Hui was sent off in the 50th minute.
Yesterday, the two Singapore Premier League (SPL) teams served up another six-goal feast at Our Tampines Hub.
It was another red card early in the second half which opened up the game and, once again, Hougang left the pitch wondering what might have been.
The Cheetahs had to settle for a 3-3 draw, despite having twice led by two goals and an extra man after Stags midfielder Yasir Hanapi's red card in the 51st minute.
A frustrated Hougang coach Clement Teo said: "We took our foot off the pedal a little and, psychologically, we were not strong enough.
"We knew we were 3-1 up and playing against 10 men and, if we switched off, we would be punished by a team like Tampines."
The first half was akin to a cagey game of chess with both sides wary of making a mistake.
Hougang drew first blood through South Korean defender Kong Ho-won, who headed home from a corner in the 30th minute.
Following Yasir's second yellow card for a needless tug on Muhaimin Suhaimi, Faris Ramli made it 2-0 with a beautiful curler in the 56th minute - only for Shah Shahiran to reply a minute later with a shot that went in off the post.
Faris then restored Hougang's two-goal advantage in the 64th minute when he turned home Muhaimin's pinpoint cross for his eighth goal of the season.
But Tampines refused to roll over even with the numerical disadvantage. First, Zehrudin Mehmedovic swept home in the 67th minute before another substitute, Khairul Amri, completed the comeback in the 70th minute when he tapped in a cut-back by Jordan Webb.
On losing their two-goal advantage twice, Teo said: "Definitely, this is not something the players are proud of and neither am I."
Tampines coach Gavin Lee was "massively proud" of his charges, particularly after a difficult midweek AFC Cup game, where they beat Myanmar champions Yangon United 4-3 in added time.
"The second half was an emotional roller coaster but, as coaches, we have to stay calm and do what we have to," he said. "We came out with a plan to attack and, even though we were a man down, that strategy didn't change.
"We were confident in what we wanted to do, and we just had to take a little more (risk). To go toe-to-toe over 90 minutes with a fresher side is really good."
In yesterday's other match, Albirex Niigata beat Geylang United 2-0 to leapfrog Hougang into second place on 17 points, six points behind leaders Brunei DPMM.
Third-placed Hougang have 16 points while Tampines (13) are fourth.

'Remarkable' ten Hag brings Ajax to the brink of history

'Remarkable' ten Hag brings Ajax to the brink of history

AMSTERDAM • There are few clubs with a history to match that of Ajax, and they are aiming to add a new chapter with their first treble since the days of Johan Cruyff.
The first leg, the Dutch Cup, was secured with a 4-0 Sunday stroll over Willem II.
Then there will be a battle for the Dutch league title that resumes this weekend. They are deadlocked with PSV Eindhoven on 80 points with two games left.
Before that, Ajax could be through to their first Champions League final since 1996.
They take a 1-0 lead into today's semi-final second leg against Tottenham, with young stars like Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Donny van de Beek mesmerising Europe having defeated Real Madrid and Juventus.
Those players have dominated the headlines, but the work done by coach Erik ten Hag, 49, has been remarkable.
His career as a player was unremarkable by comparison, with the 2001 Dutch Cup the only major trophy he won on the field.
"He loved the game and he loved talking about the game," Scott Booth, who played in that Twente side, said of his captain.
Ten Hag the midfielder was close to Fred Rutten, his coach at Twente and, after ending his playing career at the age of 32, later became Rutten's assistant at PSV.
Before that, he had a spell as an assistant to Steve McClaren at Twente, helping the Englishman to win a first Dutch title in 2010.
These days, ten Hag's playing style draws comparisons to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
"When we lose the ball, we must win it back immediately," goalkeeper Andre Onana said.
"He is focused on that, he is always telling us that if we have control of the ball, we have the ability to push back any opponent."
In his first season as a coach in his own right, ten Hag won promotion with Go Ahead Eagles in 2013, but he left them for a job with Bayern Munich's reserve side.
His time in Bavaria coincided with Guardiola's first two years as Bayern coach.
"I still remember very well that when I quit the Eredivisie to go and coach in the German Regionalliga (fourth tier), lots of people in the Netherlands were sceptical," ten Hag told German daily Bild.
"I never regretted that decision. To work at a club as big as Bayern was like winning the lottery."
He lapped up the opportunity to watch Guardiola's training sessions up close before returning to the Eredivisie with Utrecht in 2015.
After two top-five finishes and a Dutch Cup final appearance, Ajax saw ten Hag as the ideal man to take over midway last season.
Ajax, the Europa League runners-up in 2017, were knocked out of both European competitions in the preliminary rounds last term, but ten Hag steered them to a second-place finish in the league.
The foundations were laid for this season's run.
"What he is managing to do with such young players is remarkable," former striker Pierre van Hooijdonk told TV station NOS.
"The likes of de Ligt, de Jong and van de Beek have only just come out of the academy and are already playing like veterans. Ten Hag deserves huge credit."

Football: Late Morgan header earns 10-man Leicester win at Burnley

BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Wes Morgan's 90th-minute header earned 10-man Leicester City a 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Burnley at Turf Moor in the Premier League on Saturday (March 16).
Chasing a second successive win under new manager Brendan Rodgers, Leicester's task was made all the more difficult when Harry Maguire was given a straight red card for fouling Johann Berg Gudmundsson in the fourth minute.
But it was the 10 men who took the lead in the 33rd minute, as James Maddison curled a brilliant free kick into the net, becoming the first Leicester player to score two goals from direct free kicks in a Premier League season.
Jamie Vardy almost doubled Leicester's lead before Burnley drew level through Dwight McNeil, who swept home Charlie Taylor's pull-back in the 38th minute to score his second Burnley goal.
Leicester dug in after the break, keeping plenty of men behind the ball to frustrate the hosts, as Ashley Barnes missed the best chance to give Burnley the lead.
However, Leicester snatched all three points through Morgan, who rose highest to ensure Rodgers' winning run continued Leicester opened up a three-point gap over Bournemouth in 11th place in the table while Burnley remained 17th, only two points clear of the bottom three.
"We stayed calm," Rodgers said.
"When we were down to 10 men, it was about having that energy and positive attitude. We have the resilience and spirit in this squad."
Burnley came into the contest on the back of three successive defeats, which have kept them embroiled in the relegation battle, but the home fans must have thought their luck was changing when Maguire fouled Gudmundsson.
That red card - the quickest in the Premier League in four years - did little to galvanise the hosts though, with Maddison's superb free kick adding to the woe on the Turf Moor terraces.
McNeil's fine finish five minutes later lightened the mood, but Burnley struggled to find that second goal, with Barnes' miss from close range late on proving costly before Morgan met Youri Tielemans' cross for the winner. Burnley have now conceded a league-high 10 goals in the 90th minute or later this season.
"We are in a tough spell now and you want to come away with something especially against 10 but it is no 'gimme'," Burnley manager Sean Dyche said.
"We did a lot right, but you have to score goals, simple as that."

Football: Rampant City crush Schalke with magnificent seven in Champions League

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City powered into the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday (March 12) as Sergio Aguero's double paved the way for a 7-0 rout of hapless Schalke in the last 16 second leg.
City had snatched two late goals to win the first leg 3-2 and they made the most of that fightback with a ruthless demolition job at the Etihad Stadium to clinch a 10-2 aggregate victory.
Aguero's penalty opened the scoring at and the Argentine forward netted again before Leroy Sane, who also contributed three assists, struck against his former club.
Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus all scored after the interval to complete City's biggest home win in the Champions League.
Pep Guardiola's side, who lifted the League Cup in February, remain on course for an unprecedented quadruple, sitting one point ahead of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League before this weekend's FA Cup quarter-final at Swansea.
This emphatic victory was the joint-biggest ever Champions League knockout stage win but won't linger long in the memory given Schalke's total lack of resistence. However it could be a good omen as City beat Schalke en route to winning their only European trophy in the 1970 Cup Winners' Cup.
Twice a Champions League winner as Barcelona boss, Guardiola claimed this week that City are "teenagers" in the competition compared to the more established European powers.
They have never won the Champions League, with their best performance a semi-final appearance in 2016 under Guardiola's predecessor Manuel Pellegrini.
But City are one of the favourites to claim the trophy after Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain crashed out and, on this evidence, Guardiola's players are up for the challenge of showing they are more mature than he believes.
It seems only winning Europe's elite club prize can make City fans fall in the love with the tournament.
Once again they loudly jeered the Champions League anthem, this time in frustration at UEFA's recent investigation into the club over allegations of financial misconduct.
Guardiola had claimed it would be a "dangerous situation" to underestimate Schalke, but the struggling Bundesliga team were never a realistic candidate to spring a surprise.

FLOODGATES OPENED

Sprinting onto Kyle Walker's pass, Sterling crossed for Aguero to shoot against a post in the opening moments.
Guardiola's men monopolised possession and their territorial dominance finally paid off in the 35th minute.
Ilkay Gundogan clipped a pass into the Schalke penalty area and Jeffrey Bruma bundled over Bernardo, with the spot-kick awarded after being checked by VAR.
Aguero stepped up to nonchalantly chip the penalty down the middle as Ralf Fahrmann dived the wrong way.
Aguero has now scored in four successive Champions League games for the first time.
That opened the floodgates as Aguero quickly put the result beyond doubt three minutes later.
Sterling was the provider as he raced onto Gundogan's pass and pulled the ball back to Aguero, who squeezed his shot past Fahrmann from a tight angle for his 27th goal of the season.
An interminable VAR delay of several minutes while Sterling was confirmed as onside drew more boos from City fans.
But they were celebrating again in the 42nd minute.
This time it was Sane who ripped open the shambolic Schalke defence, the German winger sent clear on goal by Oleksandr Zinchenko before driving a clinical strike into the far corner.
City were streets ahead of Schalke in every phase of the game and Sterling maintained his sublime form with a cool finish from Sane's majestic pass in the 56th minute.
Bernardo made it five in the 71st minute, netting with a first-time shot from Sane's pass.
There was still time for Foden to bag his first Champions League goal as the young midfielder took Sane's pass and slotted home in the 78th minute.
Jesus beat Fahrmann's weak attempted save with six minutes left to complete City's perfect evening.

Keiji Shigetomi knows the magnitude of his task in his first senior appointment as head coach of reigning Singapore Premier League (SPL) champions Albirex Niigata.
After three seasons of sweeping all competitive silverware, anything less than complete dominance this term might be considered a failure.
But the White Swans coach is unfazed.
"Of course, I'm excited for the upcoming season," Shigetomi told The Straits Times. "I'm a little bit nervous too, because last year we were champions for everything.
"But I'm enjoying myself and I'm having fun. I feel fantastic."
He is not one to shy away from challenges. He had no qualms speaking to ST without a translator - which was not often practised by his predecessors - even if he admits his command of English is "not so great".

Just one match into the new season, he is already feeling the heat.
Shigetomi's introduction to Singapore football ended in defeat as Albirex failed in their bid to lift a fourth successive Community Shield - a non-competitive trophy - after losing on penalties to Home United last Saturday.
The loss has raised questions whether the new-look squad, with only four players retained from last season, can match up to their predecessors.
One of them is attacking midfielder Hiroyoshi Kamata, who said: "We could not win the Community Shield, but we are still aiming for success in the SPL and Singapore Cup.
"It has been said that we are weaker this year than last year, but I think this target can certainly be realised."
Skipper Kyoga Nakamura, a new arrival who represented Japan at the 2013 Under-17 World Cup, added: "Now that we have played our first official game, we understand our places in the team better. We are working seriously to correct and modify what we have to."
Shigetomi, who arrived in Singapore in 2014 to lead Albirex's soccer school and stepped up to assistant coach for the SPL team last season, is keen to continue with the slick football of predecessor Kazuaki Yoshinaga's team.
The new man in the hot seat, however, realises that this is not a straightforward task.
Other than having to integrate a new-look side, Shigetomi also has to contend with new SPL rules which require Albirex to sign at least four Singaporean players, with at least two playing the entire first half.
The club missed out on several targets in the close season, but still managed to sign six local players.
"Six local players joined, but three are students, so they can join our (usual) morning training sessions only one or two times every week. So it is a bit of headache for me," said Shigetomi, with a wry smile.
The difference in culture will also take time to bridge.
The coach cited how his local players would arrive less than 30 minutes before training sessions.
In contrast, the Japanese players would report for training more than 90 minutes earlier to do proper stretching.
"But I have seen improvement and these days it is OK," said the 39-year-old.
The former head coach of the Sanfreece Hiroshima Soccer School in Japan is optimistic his side will gel and grow as the season progresses and can challenge on all fronts.
"Yes, it is so difficult to do," he said. "We need to have more quality in our passing and our defending.
"But I think over time, the players will understand each other more and we will get better.
"So our target is still to win all (the competitive) trophies."

Football: AFC Wimbledon humble West Ham in FA Cup shock

LONDON (REUTERS) - AFC Wimbledon delivered an FA Cup fourth-round shock as the League One strugglers humbled Premier League West Ham United 4-2 in a gripping tie in south-west London on Saturday (Jan 26).
Wimbledon, bottom of England's third tier, took full advantage of a lacklustre West Ham display with Kwesi Appiah putting them ahead before Scott Wagstaff's double either side of halftime saw them lead Manuel Pellegrini's side 3-0.
West Ham, who made six changes from their last Premier League game against Bournemouth, responded with goals by Lucas Perez and Brazilian substitute Felipe Anderson.
After Wimbledon had absorbed some intense pressure from West Ham, Toby Sibbick headed past Adrian in the 88th minute to send them into the fifth round for the first time since the club was formed in 2002.
West Ham are 58 places higher than AFC Wimbledon in the English football pyramid.
AFC Wimbledon were formed by fans of former FA Cup winners Wimbledon who controversially uprooted from London to Milton Keynes in 2002 and became MK Dons.

Pochettino loses cool as Spurs lose ground

Pochettino loses cool as Spurs lose ground

LONDON • When the whistle blew for full time yesterday at Turf Moor - and perhaps also signalling the end of Tottenham's Premier League title chase - Mauricio Pochettino lost his cool and confronted referee Mike Dean.
The Spurs manager was presumably arguing that Burnley's corner which led to their first goal should not have been given.
But Dean saw no wrong in the decision and even the return of Harry Kane, after missing seven games through ankle injury, could not save Tottenham as they crashed to a 2-1 defeat.
The loss also meant that Pochettino's men (60 points) remain five points behind leaders Manchester City and Liverpool, who have a game in hand and will leapfrog City should they win or draw at Manchester United today.
Essentially, though, Tottenham's title challenge has suffered a huge blow with just 11 games remaining.
Speaking after the match, Pochettino admitted that Spurs are unlikely to be contenders now.

"It was an important game, we needed the three points to fight for the Premier League. It is difficult for us to be a contender now," the Argentinian said.
"We made mistakes but we don't deserve the defeat, but that is football. In my mind we needed the three points to put the pressure on.
"We cannot blame anyone other than ourselves, because we were unable to win.
"I am going to accept everything (a likely punishment for confronting Dean) from the FA, but I hope nothing will go further."
Burnley striker Chris Wood opened the scoring in the 57th minute but the home side's lead did not last long. Kane showed no signs of rust and displayed great composure to net Spurs' equaliser just eight minutes later.
Tottenham had stolen late winners in three of their last four league games, but it was Burnley who finished in the ascendancy in the 83rd minute.
Johann Berg Gudmundsson drove into the Spurs area and smashed a shot towards the far post and, with Jan Vertonghen unable to clear, Ashley Barnes tapped into the empty net to seal victory.
"We made it hard for them and that was what the game plan was," said Barnes. "We need to keep being resilient and compact. That's what we did."

Football: Osako double saves the day for Japan in 3-2 Asian Cup win over Turkmenistan

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Yuya Osako netted a quickfire double as former champions Japan survived a scare to beat Turkmenistan 3-2 in their Asian Cup opener on Wednesday (Jan 9).
The Blue Samurai reached the last 16 of last year's World Cup but they had to fight back from a goal down at halftime in their Group F clash in Abu Dhabi.
Turkmenistan captain Arslan Amanov put the underdogs ahead after 26 minutes, unleashing a ferocious long-range drive that arrowed into the top corner.
But Osako produced a smart turn and finish inside the box to equalise for Japan 10 minutes into the second half after sustained pressure from the four-time Asian champions.
The Werder Bremen striker put Japan in front four minutes later, tapping into an empty net after Yuto Nagatomo's dinked pass over goalkeeper Mammet Orazmuhammedow.
Ritsu Doan added a deflected third after 70 minutes, but Ahmet Atayev smashed in a penalty 11 minutes from time for the Emeralds to ensure a nervous finish for the Japanese.

Young Lions pull out of AFF U-22 c'ship
The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announced yesterday that the national Under-22 team will not be competing at next month's Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-22 Youth Championship.
A packed schedule in the opening months of this year has meant that Fandi Ahmad's Young Lions are unable to commit to the regional competition.
FAS general secretary Yazeen Buhari said: "We have taken into account the quality of preparation and the availability of our young players. For this year, our focus will be on AFC (Asian Football Confederation) U-23 qualifiers in March and the South-east-Asia Games in November.
"In addition, centralised training camps are also being planned for as part of the team's preparations for these tournaments."
The second edition of the AFF U-22 tournament will be held from Feb 17 to March 2 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The first edition was contested 14 years ago in 2005 before being revived again this year.
Singapore were originally drawn in Group B, alongside Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia and the host.
Fandi's team are currently in Kuala Lumpur for pre-season training to prepare for the upcoming Singapore Premier League season, which is set to kick off next month.
The team are also committed to the AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers from March 22-26.
Singapore are in Group G, alongside host Mongolia, North Korea and Hong Kong.
The top team in each of the 11 groups and the four best runners-up will join host Thailand in the finals to be played next year.
The top-three finishers at the U-23 finals will also qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Football: Man City fan 'critical' after alleged assault in Germany

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AFP) - German police confirmed on Thursday (Feb 21) that a Manchester City fan is in a critical condition following an alleged assault after the Premier League club's Champions League match against Schalke.
Police in Gelsenkirchen say a 32-year-old male City fan was allegedly punched at Schalke's Veltins Arena, near the away fans section, and suffered a "massive traumatic brain injury" after falling.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where his condition is described as "critical".
Local police are investigating a clash between two Schalke and two City fans, which led to the injury, and have called for witnesses.
City issued a statement on their website on Thursday saying they were "aware of an alleged assault after the match".
"The club are working with Greater Manchester Police and German Police to ascertain more information," it said.
"Club staff have remained in Germany to support the family of an injured City fan who is currently in a critical condition in hospital."
Pep Guardiola's Premier League leaders sealed a dramatic 3-2 win in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday despite being down to 10 men after Nicolas Otamendi was sent off.
The victory in the first leg of the last-16 tie leaves the English club firm favourites to progress to the quarter-finals with the return in Manchester on March 12.

LEICESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Newcastle took a huge step towards securing their Premier League survival as Ayoze Perez sealed a 1-0 win against Leicester on Friday (April 12).
Rafael Benitez's side moved 10 points clear of the relegation zone thanks to Perez's first half header at the King Power Stadium.
Newcastle's first away league win since December ended a run of four games without a victory which had threatened to drag them into the relegation dogfight.
They should be assured of maintaining their top-flight status after a difficult season tarnished by Benitez's discontent over a lack of backing in the transfer market from controversial owner Mike Ashley.
"It's massive for the team. You have to give credit to the players who worked hard," Benitez said.
"We were playing against a good team. We needed to do almost everything perfect and we were close. It's easier with this commitment from players." Amid rumours he might not be in charge next season if Ashley won't promise more investment, Benitez added: "We have to have a team who can compete.
"This city, the club has potential. It's massive. I'm not looking to spend £200 million, but doing the right things.
"You can do everything right with your tactics, but the other team has one player that can make the difference."
Leicester remain seventh after a first home defeat for boss Brendan Rodgers since his move from Celtic in February.
Salomon Rondon almost gave Newcastle the lead midway through the first half with a ferocious 30-yard free-kick that cannoned back off the woodwork.
Leicester went close when Ben Chilwell exchanged passes with James Maddison before hitting a low strike that Martin Dubravka kept out.
Miguel Almiron spun away from the Leicester defence and forced Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel into action with a powerful effort.
Harvey Barnes was a constant threat for Leicester and he surged past two defenders for a shot which Dubravka was equal to.
But it was Perez who broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute as the Spanish winger met Matt Ritchie's cross with a glancing header that flashed over Schmeichel.
Perez wasted a good chance to double Newcastle's lead early in the second half when he volleyed wide from Rondon's cross.
Almiron fared no better after Fabian Schar carried the ball out of Newcastle's defence and picked out his team-mate with a superb pass that demanded a better finish than the hurried shot that cleared the crossbar.
The last time Leicester won a Premier League game in which they trailed at half was in October 2015 against West Bromwich Albion.
Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers would have settled for even a draw as time ticked away, but Barnes could only head across goal from Chilwell's cross.
Perez was denied by a fine save from Schmeichel in a frantic finale.
Leicester striker Jamie Vardy had struggled to penetrate Newcastle's well-drilled defence and when he finally got a sight of goal he misfired, lifting his shot over from Youri Tielemans' pass.
The last opportunity for a Leicester leveller came and went in stoppage-time when Tielemans appealed in vain for a penalty after going to ground when a cross reached him at the far post.

Stronger action to fight racism

Stronger action to fight racism

PODGORICA • European football's governing body Uefa yesterday charged Montenegro over racist behaviour by their fans towards England players during their Euro 2020 qualifier.
Gareth Southgate's men were irrepressible as they ran out 5-1 winners. However, the rout was soured by the prolonged racist abuse, leading to calls for stadium bans.
Defender Danny Rose was subjected to monkey chants while forward Raheem Sterling, who called for Montenegro supporters to be banned from matches, was also targeted on Monday night.
Calling the abuse as "not acceptable", England manager Southgate told TV channel ITV Sport: "I definitely heard abuse of Danny Rose when he got booked at the end of the game. There's no doubt in my mind that happened."
And Uefa has taken action by starting disciplinary proceedings, with the case set to be heard on May 16. Montenegro could face a partial or full stadium closure for their next qualifying match.
But Southgate, whose side ran riot on the night through Michael Keane, Ross Barkley's brace and a penalty from Harry Kane before Sterling added gloss to the scoreline, felt "sanctions are worthless if there is nothing alongside that to help educate people".
The 48-year-old added: "There's an innocence about young people that is only influenced by older people. We have to make sure the education is right for everybody, in our country, the same."
He also said he had yet to talk to Sterling, who responded to the taunts by cupping his hands to his ears towards a section of Montenegro fans when he scored late on.
The Manchester City player told Sky Sports after the Group A game: "I didn't hear (the chants) personally, but Danny made it clear and (made me) aware that's what they were doing, so I just wanted to show them they were going to need more than that to upset and stop us.
"It's a shame to see this keep going on. It's now time for the people in charge to put a stamp on it. You can fine someone, but what's that going to do? You've got to punish the fans who can't come to the games.

A SERIOUS PROBLEM
You can fine someone, but what's that going to do? You've got to make it a bit harder. You've got to punish the whole fans who can't come to the games... because if their team can't play with fans, it's going to be difficult for them.
RAHEEM STERLING, who was targeted by Montenegro fans, urging stronger measures against racist abuse.

"You've got to do something that will really make them think twice because if their team can't play with fans, it's going to be difficult for them."
He later took to social media to revel in the resounding victory, tweeting: "Best way to silence the haters... (and yeah I mean racists)."
Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi, who became the second-youngest England player to start a competitive game at the Podgorica City Stadium, also felt the provocative goading was "not right".
Admitting it had marred his career milestone, the 18-year-old told beIN Sports: "You are trying to enjoy the moment but, when you are hearing stuff like that from the fans, it's unacceptable.
"I don't think discrimination should be anywhere - we are equal. Me and Rosey heard it, the 'Oooh, Oooh' monkey stuff.
"Hopefully, Uefa will deal with it."
The unsavoury scenes drew swift condemnation from other parties, with football's anti-discrimination group Kick it Out tweeting: "Disgraceful to hear racist chants directed at black England players this evening.
"As we've argued countless times, it's time for Uefa to take strong, decisive action - fines won't do. Extended stadium bans or tournament expulsion are what's needed."
Pundit Ian Wright agreed, claiming that a slap on the wrist would be little deterrence. The former Arsenal striker told ITV: "They (Montenegro) will be fined a pittance, and we'll get the same thing again here the next time or somewhere else. It's not going to stop them."
