Ronaldo '1,000%' sure of staying

MILAN • Cristiano Ronaldo said he was "1,000 per cent committed to staying" with Juventus next season as he claimed his first Italian Serie A title and Juve their eighth in a row on Saturday.
Massimiliano Allegri's side had needed just one more point for a 35th Scudetto and their latest title triumph helped ease some of the pain of their shock Champions League exit at the Juventus Stadium to Ajax last Tuesday.
A come-from-behind 2-1 win over Fiorentina was enough to give them a 20-point lead on nearest rivals Napoli with five games to play.
Serbian defender Nikola Milenkovic put Fiorentina ahead, but Alex Sandro's diving header and an own goal from Fiorentina defender German Pezzella after a Ronaldo cross in the 53rd minute sealed another title to ease their European disappointment.
"It was a great season and I adapted well. We won the Scudetto and the Italian Super Cup, which is not easy to achieve," said Ronaldo.
"It didn't go well in the Champions League. Next year is a new page, the fans all want it and so do we. I'm staying at Juve, 1,000 per cent."
It was the 34-year-old's sixth domestic league title, having won three with Manchester United and two with Real Madrid, as he becomes the first player to win the Premier League, LaLiga and Serie A.
Juventus bought the five-time Ballon d'Or winner for €100 million (S$152 million) last summer.
He has scored 19 goals and dished out six assists, and is in the running for the top-scorer award along with Sampdoria's Fabio Quagliarella (22) and AC Milan's Krzysztof Piatek (21).
Juventus have lost only two matches, against Genoa and Spal, with 28 wins and three draws. Their eight straight title also sees them overtake French club Lyon for the record of consecutive victories in the top five European leagues.
"I'm very happy because we've achieved an important goal," said Allegri, who becomes the first coach to win five straight Serie A titles.
He has six in total, having also won with AC Milan, one behind Giovanni Trapattoni, who has seven.
"We had an amazing season and we won 50 per cent of the competitions we participated in. Of course, we are disappointed by the elimination of Tuesday, but a title is celebrated. We won it five games from the end and that's all about what the lads did on the pitch," he said.
Juventus also equalled the record for the earliest the title has been won, with five games to spare, a feat achieved by Torino (1948), Fiorentina (1956) and Inter Milan (2007).
"We were greatly disappointed this week, but now it's time to party," said defender Giorgio Chiellini. "And we have to continue to progress and work, it's the only way we know at Juventus."

Klopp calm for the run-in

Klopp calm for the run-in

LONDON • The Premier League title race is the most competitive it has been for years, but Jurgen Klopp is not having a "heart attack" whenever he hears nearest challengers Manchester City have won.
The Liverpool boss was asked for his take after Pep Guardiola's men edged out West Ham 1-0 at home on Wednesday thanks to a contentious Sergio Aguero spot kick.
The German said: "I don't think you need an answer from me. We only need to play football and to win games, then we will see what happens.
"It's a normal thing. If you are top of the table, it's pretty likely that all the contenders win. That's how it is. I didn't think about City, but it is of course what I expected."
He knows that when his team deliver "a good example of how football should look", they have every chance of ending 29 years of title hurt. The 5-0 mauling of Watford at Anfield to maintain their one-point lead at the top was Liverpool's biggest victory of the season.
Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk both scored twice and Divock Origi was also on the scoresheet, leaving Klopp purring at the team's vintage attacking display.
Challenging his side to "play like this every day", he said: "That is maybe sometimes possible, sometimes a bit less. But you have to be stable, and the boys were always stable and really fluent offensively.

Sadio Mane has beaten his best Premier League goal haul of 13 (2016-17) with his double against Watford.

"Let's try to do it again."
He also hit back at pundits who claimed Liverpool's goals have dried up after being held goal-less in their past two games.
He added: "We draw against Bayern (Munich) and (Manchester) United and everybody talks about, I don't know exactly what about, but things I don't understand.
"It's always about showing reactions, but not reactions of the things we are talking about."
He made a tactical tweak by playing Mane in the middle in Roberto Firmino's absence and it worked wonders as his pace gave the Reds a new attacking dimension.
His second goal - a back-heeled flick - in particular caught the eye and the Senegal forward, who is enjoying his most prolific league campaign with 14 goals, revelled in "one (of the most adventurous goals) I've scored".
He said: "It was my first time since I came to Liverpool I played centrally. I always said I'm here for the team, so I try to play any position the coach asks me to play to help the team."
In contrast, Guardiola conceded City "could do better" but still praised his team for putting on "an incredible performance" despite the only goal being a "soft" penalty.
It was awarded after Felipe Anderson made contact with City substitute Bernardo Silva in the box.
Although the league champions were not at their best, the Spaniard felt it was the result of "tension after 120 minutes (against Chelsea in last Sunday's League Cup final)", before insisting it would be a case of which team will slip up the least in the 10-game title run-in.
He said: "Liverpool is a top side, we know that. Now we have a gap with the first two with the third, we're eight points (ahead of Tottenham), nine points for the leader.
"Many things are going to happen. We are going to drop points, Liverpool are going to drop points.
"It's important now to refresh, good recovery and prepare the game against Bournemouth."
Aguero has now scored 30 goals in his last 24 league starts at home, with every one of them ending in a City victory.

Sarri may turn to psychologist to fix Blues' woes

Sarri may turn to psychologist to fix Blues' woes

LONDON • Maurizio Sarri will consider drafting a psychologist onto his coaching staff after suggesting that his Chelsea players are suffering from a mental block during matches.
The Blues coach had seen his team take the foot off the gas late in the recent win at Brighton and succumb to Wolves in similar circumstances, and last Saturday's 1-0 Premier League home loss to Leicester was more of the same.
Defender Antonio Rudiger branded his team's third defeat in six league games "a disaster" and down to "a lack of mentality".
Urging his teammates to make amends ahead of their league trip to Watford tomorrow, he said: "We don't talk about the title any more. If we can't win these games, we can't compete. We only talk now about top four. Stupid."
Sarri also felt Chelsea's underlying problems could not be pinned on fitness issues, saying: "There is another reason - not the players' physical condition.
"I had a sports psychologist 15 years ago in Italy, but it was really very difficult because the clubs were not ready then. But we can talk about it, why not?
The Italian is expected to shuffle the pack - striker Alvaro Morata remains an injury doubt - at Vicarage Road and he confirmed that midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek would make only his second league start of the season against either the Hornets or at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Hinting that there could be departures when the January transfer window opens, he said: "At the moment, we have too many. We have 28 players and it's impossible to use all of them. 25 is the right number.
"You already know my opinion, because I've told you in the past. We have a lot of offensive midfielders and we have only (N'Golo) Kante as a defensive midfielder so it's not easy now for the midfield to have the right balance."
But, for now, Sarri will have to put all thoughts of transfers to the side and focus on an improving Watford side, now in seventh place and with genuine designs on a Europa League spot.
The last time Javi Gracia's men played European football was in the 1983-84 season, but captain Troy Deeney feels this could be their year as they are "not a bad outfit". He told The Mirror: "I let everybody else do the ambitions. We know what we have got in the dressing room.
"But we've got to keep doing what we're doing, be a bit arrogant in terms of knowing what we have got, but humble enough to know you have to work hard to win in this league."
Teammate Craig Cathcart agreed, insisting the mood around the club was "going really well".
He said: "Since I've come to the club, it's been an uphill scale. We've managed to stabilise ourselves in the Premier League.
"We've added top-quality players since we've been here and it's just a pleasure to play for the club."

Mbappe sent off in Cup shock
PARIS • Kylian Mbappe was sent off for a shocking tackle as Paris Saint-Germain were stunned by Rennes in Saturday's French Cup final, losing 6-5 on penalties after a dramatic game finished 2-2 at the end of extra time.
PSG substitute Christopher Nkunku blazed his sudden-death spot kick over the bar in the shoot-out, sparking scenes of joy among the Rennes fans at the Stade de France as they won a first trophy in almost half a century.
"It has been talked about enough at the club in the last few weeks for us to realise that we have achieved something historic," said Rennes coach Julien Stephan.
It was a remarkable comeback from the Brittany side, who had seen Dani Alves and the returning Neymar give Ligue 1 champions PSG a 2-0 lead midway through the first half. PSG looked poised to wrap up a domestic double, but Presnel Kimpembe's own goal gave Rennes hope and Mexer headed them level in the 66th minute to force extra time.
Penalties were already looming when Mbappe, who endured a frustrating evening, was shown a straight red card in the 118th minute.
He caught Rennes defender Damien da Silva on the knee with his studs, and can expect a lengthy ban.
PSG coach Thomas Tuchel said: "He had a slight muscle injury yesterday, he stopped training early and went to hospital for tests. Maybe that was in his head. You got the feeling he was lacking confidence and didn't feel free. The red card at the end, it's not him."
PSG fell short of securing the double in Tuchel's first season in charge, which will also be remembered for the club's Champions League exit to Manchester United in the last 16.
"I am sad," said Neymar. "We weren't quite up to it, but there is no point crying about it now. There is nothing we can do."

Klopp hails Salah as he targets 97-point total

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp was "blown away" by the brilliance of Mohamed Salah's strike against Chelsea as he urged Liverpool to produce a flawless finish to the English Premier League title race.
The Egypt international struck an astounding goal just two minutes after fellow forward Sadio Mane - his 13th in 16 games - opened the scoring at Anfield as the Reds regained a two-point lead over Manchester City with a 2-0 Premier League victory against Maurizio Sarri's side on Sunday.
While Klopp was thrilled by what he described as a complete team performance, it was Salah's emphatic finish past Kepa Arrizabalaga that left him momentarily speechless.
He said post-game: "I didn't think anything in that moment, but I know I was really happy because I was in line with the ball and maybe I saw first that it would go in.
"It was a really outstanding finish and I don't want to minimise that but I loved the first goal, too. I was immediately reminded of the 4-3 against Borussia Dortmund.
"Hendo (Jordan Henderson) instead of Milly (James Milner) and Sadio instead of Dejan (Lovren), but good team play, good cross, good header. The performance was really good, but you need the goals and we got them."
Salah has 19 league goals, 22 in total, but had been on a barren run by his high standards with one goal in 10 games before he sealed the win against his former club.
Asked about the drought, Klopp said: "The answer in football is always work rate and the work rate of all three up front was outstanding."

Although Liverpool are only four wins from their first league title since 1990 should City slip up in any of their remaining five matches, Klopp has insisted the focus is on finishing the season with 97 points and not on what Pep Guardiola's team produce.
The German added: "The biggest challenge for us is always facing the world outside. We play our game.
"We only try to collect as many points as possible. What is it now, 85? Four games to play, 97. Let's try. If that's enough, then perfect. If not, we cannot change it.
"By the way, on this point, we can finally close the slipping book. Robbo (Andrew Robertson) slipped (during the game) and nothing happened, so it's not a Liverpool thing. Done."
Defender Virgil van Dijk also urged his teammates to take it game by game, despite the red half of Merseyside anticipating they will finally end 29 years of title hurt next month.
He said: "We just focus on our games, we have a massive game next (at Porto) in the Champions League, then to Cardiff which will be tough as well."

Football: Aguero penalty gives Man City 1-0 win over West Ham

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) -Sergio Aguero's penalty gave champions Manchester City a 1-0 win over West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday (Feb 27) to stay a point behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.
The decisive moment came in the 59th minute when Felipe Anderson was ruled to have brought down Bernardo Silva and Aguero coolly slotted home from the spot.
Former City manager Manuel Pellegrini set his West Ham team up to frustrate the hosts and they did an excellent job for most of the game, forcing City into wide areas where they struggled to create openings.
City camped in the visitors' half for the opening 45 minutes with David Silva going close to breaking the deadlock when he hit the post after an excellent low cross.
West Ham went close after the break when substitute Manuel Lanzini found Andy Carroll at the back post, but City keeper Ederson did well to parry the forward's well-struck effort.
City boss Pep Guardiola promptly threw on Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva from the bench and they changed the tempo and flow of the game.
Second-placed City have 68 points while leaders Liverpool are on 69.

Football: Cesc Fabregas completes move from Chelsea to Monaco

MONACO (REUTERS) - Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas has completed his move to French team AS Monaco from Chelsea, the clubs said on Friday (Jan 11).
The 31-year-old, who played for Arsenal from 2003-11 and Chelsea from 2014, won the World Cup with Spain in 2010 and the European Championship in 2008 and 2012.
"Cesc Fabregas has today completed a permanent transfer to Monaco," Premier League Chelsea said on their website as Monaco confirmed he had signed with them until June, 2022.
Fabregas won two league titles with Chelsea and one Spanish La Liga crown during his 2011-14 stint at Barcelona.
"We thank Cesc for his wonderful service and wish him the very best of luck for the next chapter in what has been a fantastic career," Chelsea said in a statement.
Fabregas scored 22 goals for the London club in 198 appearances.
Monaco, managed by Fabregas's former Arsenal team mate Thierry Henry, are struggling second from bottom of the Ligue 1 standings ahead of a crunch game against neighbours Olympique de Marseille on Sunday.
"It is a great pleasure to join Monaco, it is a new project for me. It is a quality squad with young players and a young coach," said Fabregas, referring to former France striker Henry.

Gattuso livid with Milan's shock exit

Gattuso livid with Milan's shock exit
ATHENS • AC Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso slammed his players for "making fools of ourselves" after bowing out of the Europa League following their shock 3-1 loss at Olympiakos.
"We gifted the game," he said after Thursday's Group F defeat in Athens, where all the goals came in the second half.
Pape Abou Cisse opened the scoring for the Greek side, whose lead was doubled after an own goal by Cristian Zapata.
The defender made amends by pulling one back for Milan, but Konstantinos Fortounis' penalty sealed the victory for the home side.
Gattuso also bemoaned the brittle nature of the seven-time European champions, who simply went to pieces after missing several opportunities to score.
"We were too naive and allowed Olympiakos to get back into the game. We are very upset because we always make the same mistakes again and again," he said.
"We had the game in our hands but, if you create seven or eight chances in a stadium like this and then fall apart the moment things go wrong, you deserve to go out."

  • 17

Years since seven-time European champions AC Milan were knocked out of European competition at a group stage (Champions League in 2001) before Thursday's Europa League exit.

The former Italy midfielder, however, refused to blame the hostile atmosphere at the Karaiskaki Stadium, or the refereeing decisions which went against his team.
"You can talk about the referee, about them throwing extra balls on to the pitch and the strange trumpet noise, but we should focus on what we can do to make Milan a better team," he added.
"We have to look at ourselves. They were better than us because they were energetic and determined. I apologise to all the Milan fans around the world for not having achieved our objective."
The last-32 draw will be held on Monday, with Arsenal, Benfica, Real Betis, Chelsea, Dinamo Zagreb, Dynamo Kiev, Eintracht Frankfurt, Genk, Inter Milan, Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli, RB Salzburg, Sevilla, Valencia, Villarreal and Zenit St Petersburg all seeded for the next round.

Facilities at shared league stadiums will be upgraded

As the local football campaign gets under way this weekend with the Community Shield, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announced yesterday some new initiatives for the second season of the Singapore Premier League (SPL).
Apart from a slight increase in subsidies for the local clubs, the biggest change will be the stadium sharing plan.
From this year, four stadiums - Jalan Besar (Young Lions and Hougang United), Bishan (Home United and Balestier Khalsa), Jurong East (Albirex Niigata and Warriors FC) and Our Tampines Hub (Tampines Rovers and Geylang International), will be used to host the eight local clubs. DPMM FC will continue to play their home matches in Brunei.
This has led to concerns that fans of the affected clubs will feel displaced. For example, Hougang are known for their loyal fan base and this is acknowledged by FAS general secretary Yazeen Buhari, who said: "They are ever-present at Hougang Stadium and they have a certain connection with the place.
"But we have explained to them the investment... is to increase the match-day experience.
"Given the infrastructure that exists in Hougang Stadium, it is less attractive to upgrade Hougang as compared to doing it (sharing stadium) at Jalan Besar."
Gerard Christopher, the FAS' deputy director (general secretary's office), added: "While the clubs, like Hougang, play their home matches at a new stadium, it does not mean they will be uprooted in terms of community engagement. They still continue to reach out to the community there and engage with schools."
Infrastructure at the four SPL stadiums will be upgraded.
Although the costs were not disclosed, the shared stadiums will receive bigger LED scoreboards, better sound systems, bucket seats for all spectators, LED billboards and banners as well as renovated dressing rooms in club colours.

Average passing mark of the Yo-Yo test this year. The passing mark was raised from 18.4 to 19.1 this year. The test is a multi-stage shuttle run conducted to increase tempo to gauge players' anaerobic fitness and all players must pass before being registered. No player failed last year.

"It is a great venue, and it will give us opportunities to organise match-day activities, and promote the club on other days, because there are just so many people using the facility," Geylang's general manager Andrew Ang told The Straits Times earlier, when asked about playing their home games at Our Tampines Hub.
The FAS was keen to emphasise that the stadium sharing arrangement is not permanent.
As part of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth's Sports Facilities Master Plan, residents in Punggol can also look forward to a regional sports centre, similar to Our Tampines Hub. It is expected to be ready by 2021 and a northern-based club like Hougang could relocate to the new stadium.
The local SPL clubs, which received $1.01 million each in subsidies from the FAS last season, will enjoy an increase in funding this year.
Although no figures were disclosed, Yazeen said: "There's a slight increase this year that is proportionate to the fact that clubs can sign an extra foreign player."
For the new season, clubs will be allowed to increase their squad size from 25 to 28, with the additional three players not restricted by age.
Last year, the local clubs were limited to two foreign signings, but are now allowed to sign an additional foreigner under the age of 21.
Tampines Rovers chairman Desmond Ong welcomed the changes, and said: "Any additional subsidy is greatly welcomed given the fact that the clubs run on tight budgets.
"But it remains to be seen how the clubs playing in AFC (Asian Football Confederation) competitions will perform if they abide by the SPL rules and take to the field with three local Under-23 players and one foreign Under-21 player."

Barcelona can end Real's title hopes
MADRID • After eliminating Real Madrid from the King's Cup in midweek, Barcelona now have the opportunity to send their arch-rivals packing in the title race, too.
The Spanish champions' 3-0 semi-final, second-leg win means they will go into their LaLiga Clasico clash with a spring in their step, even though Real were the better side in the second leg.
A repeat today at the Santiago Bernabeu would leave Santiago Solari's side 12 points adrift of Barcelona, who also enjoy a superior head-to-head record.
That would be a gargantuan gap to make up with 12 games left.
Atletico Madrid are closer, seven points back, and they still have to play Barca in April, albeit at the Nou Camp, where they have not won in 18 visits.
But there is no doubt bumping Real out of the chase would be a major step for the Catalan giants and they should feel confident if recent form between the two is any guide.

  • Points behind leaders Barcelona if Real Madrid lose the Clasico with 12 LaLiga games left.

The Cup victory was Barcelona's fourth in six games at the Bernabeu and they have scored three or more in each of those matches. Defender Gerard Pique believes his team have Real worked out as they "know how to get at them".
Ernesto Valverde's men certainly taught Solari's players a lesson in finishing on Wednesday, with Luis Suarez notching his 11th goal in all Clasico encounters.
Tipping the Uruguay striker to again make the difference up front, Valverde told Spanish daily AS: "I don't think there are many players capable of scoring three times against Madrid twice in the same season.
"When Luis Suarez is in the area, he is at 200 per cent."
On Thursday, Valencia sealed a 1-0 second-leg victory over Real Betis to book their spot in the King's Cup final against Barca on May 25.
A 2-2 first-leg draw had given Marcelino's men the edge and they put in a solid performance to reach their first major final since winning the competition in 2008.
The Valencia coach said post-game: "We have suffered a lot this season and the team deserved this reward, we have had very difficult moments.
"We deserve better than the results show. There have been many draws, a few defeats. We are always competitive."

Bournemouth 1
Tottenham 0
LONDON • Tottenham are not making things easy in their quest for a top-four Premier League finish.
On a madcap afternoon yesterday at Bournemouth, they played for 42 minutes with nine men, after seeing Son Heung-min and substitute Juan Foyth sent off, and eventually lost 1-0 to a last-gasp Nathan Ake goal at the Vitality Stadium.
Spurs have now lost seven of their last 11 league games and this was surely not the preparation they had in mind for Wednesday, when they travel to Ajax seeking to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit in the Champions League semi-finals.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino said he has accepted the decision of referee Craig Pawson for the red cards, and blamed his side's defeat on not having any luck.
"Everyone saw the game. I don't need to explain too much. We need to accept the decision of the referee," he said.
"We did not have too much luck. We have to move on. For the first 40 minutes we played so well, creating chances. We did not score, sometimes football is cruel.

  • 2

  • Tottenham are the first team to receive two straight red cards in a Premier League match since Manchester City (versus Chelsea) in December 2016.

"And we conceded in the last minutes. Two red cards made it difficult but we fought.
"Unlucky for us, nothing to say. A mad game that you have to accept.

  • 125

  • Number of seconds Spurs substitute Juan Foyth was on the field from the start of the second half before being sent off for a dangerous tackle on Jack Simpson.

"We are third, we are competing for the top four, we are in the semi-finals of the Champions League. I feel proud about our season.
"What will happen, will happen."
Spurs stayed third, two points clear of Chelsea (68), four ahead of Arsenal and five more than Manchester United, with the top-four race set to go to the final day.
A win would have sealed qualification for next season's Champions League, with their three rivals not in action until today.
Spurs dominated early but found debutant goalkeeper Mark Travers, 19, in inspired form for the hosts as he made a string of fine saves. He is the first teenage goalkeeper to start a Premier League game since Manchester City's Joe Hart in 2006.
Spurs' task was made all the more difficult two minutes before the interval when forward Son was sent off for pushing Jefferson Lerma and half-time substitute Foyth lasted just 125 seconds before seeing red for a lunging tackle on Jack Simpson. Bournemouth struggled to make their numerical advantage count until Ake headed the dramatic winner in the 90th minute.
As it stands, unless results involving Chelsea, Arsenal and United go in their favour today, Spurs may need to beat Everton at home on the final day next Sunday.
The double sending-off also prompted a somewhat cheeky response from pundit Gary Lineker, the former Spurs striker who has never been booked in his career.
He tweeted: "May the Foyth be with you in the dressing room Son."
Match-winner Ake felt that his side had the luck which Tottenham were missing.
"When the opposition has two red cards, you are expected to win. We were sloppy. We didn't create enough, so we are happy we scored in the last minute," he said.

Football: Everton set target of winning EPL title within next decade

Football: Everton set target of winning EPL title within next decade

LONDON (AFP) - Everton chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale has set the Toffees a target of winning the Premier League and playing Champions League football in their new stadium during the next decade.
The Liverpool club have never lifted the Premier League trophy - they were last crowned champions of England in 1986/87 when they took the then First Division title to their current Goodison Park base.
Champions League football is also a rarity for Everton fans, with the club presently 11th in the Premier League table and 17 points adrift of a top-four spot that would secure a place among Europe's elite.
But Barrett-Baxendale, who on just the second day of her now eight-month tenure sacked manager Sam Allardyce and director of football Steve Walsh - believes Everton must aim high should they complete a proposed move to their new £500 million (S$865.9 million) stadium at Bramley-Moore.
Barrett-Baxendale, speaking at her first Everton shareholders meeting at Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall on Tuesday (Jan 8), said the club should be "challenging at the top of the Premier League and competing at the highest level in European competitions".
She added: "Ultimately this means challenging for domestic titles and trophies, not only to win cups, but to win Premier League titles too.
"It means competing regularly in the Champions League and it means doing all of this in a world-class, world-renowned football stadium."
Barrett-Baxendale, one of the most high-profile women in the traditionally male-dominated world of English football, admitted: "This is an extremely challenging goal. It is very much a long-term goal for our club but it is vital we are ambitious and that we deliver performances on and off the pitch that drives our club forward to achieve our ambitions.
"I acknowledge our vision is challenging, and the barriers to entry are indeed daunting, but we are Everton and we must all be focused and driven to meet that challenge."

Football: Messi to miss next Argentina match with injury after comeback defeat against Venezuela

(DPA) - Lionel Messi will miss Argentina's friendly against Morocco on Tuesday (March 26) with a groin injury, the South American nation's football association AFA has said.
It tweeted after Friday's 3-1 defeat against Venezuela in Madrid that the superstar has a pubic bone problem which would keep him out of the match in Tangier.
It was not clear whether the injury could also endanger Messi's participation in Barcelona's upcoming Champions League quarter-finals against Manchester United.
The 31-year-old played his first Argentina match since the 2018 World Cup against Venezuela but was unable to prevent defeat in the tune-up match for the Copa America in June in Brazil.
"We will learn a lot from this defeat," coach Lionel Scaloni said, and forward Dario Benedetto stated: "Messi is the best player in the world and we have to adapt as quickly as possible to him."
The AFA said that midfielder Gonzalo Martinez would also miss the Morocco game with injury.

Football: Improved Denis Suarez ready to make impact, say Unai Emery

LONDON • With Granit Xhaka facing a late fitness test and Lucas Torreira suspended, Unai Emery has challenged Denis Suarez to finally make an impact in Arsenal's bid to climb back into the Premier League's top four.
Suarez has struggled since his January loan move from Barcelona and the Spanish midfielder is yet to make a competitive start for the Gunners.
But a series of impressive displays at Arsenal's recent training camp in Dubai could earn the 25-year-old a place in the starting line-up against Newcastle at the Emirates Stadium today (tomorrow morning, Singapore time).
Suarez played the full 90 minutes and created a goal for Carl Jenkinson in Arsenal 3-2 friendly victory over Al Nasr.
Arsenal boss Emery is encouraged by Suarez's timely improvement, saying: "He is okay for starting in the first XI, to give us this impact. We are going to need everybody, every player for the next matches.
"We decided to go away to train for four days and play a match in Dubai. But it's the same idea, the same spirit."
Emery was keen to work with Suarez again after signing him on loan at Sevilla in 2014-15.
Asked about the time it had taken Suarez to settle in north London, Emery added: "It's normal. Now we have a lot of players ready, with a big mentality and with a big performance to play and help us."
Beating Newcastle would give Arsenal a 10th successive home league win, equalling a run they last enjoyed in the 1997-98 season in Arsene Wenger's first full campaign as manager.
A victory is essential after Arsenal dropped to fifth place on Saturday as a result of Manchester United's 2-1 win over Watford.
Emery's men are one point behind United and can't afford to drop points as they battle to qualify for next season's Champions League via a top-four finish or winning the Europa League.
Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has warned his players not to ease up as they inch closer to guaranteeing their safety.
The Magpies are seven points above the bottom three and their 35-point total is just three short of the number Benitez believes will be enough to stay up.
Newcastle have lost only one of their last six league games, but Benitez is taking nothing for granted.
"If you see what Arsenal are doing, they are doing really well, so we cannot expect that it will be an easy game," the Spaniard said.
"We have now 35 and we are fine, but still we have to win. The next game is the most important for us, it's like a final for us and I don't think about what the others will do."

United will attack PSG, vows Solskjaer

United will attack PSG, vows Solskjaer

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer further endeared himself to the Old Trafford faithful after confirming Manchester United would stay true to their attacking ethos and not sit back ahead of the first leg of their Champions League last-16 meeting against Paris Saint-Germain today.
British media reports have indicated that the interim manager will land the job on a permanent basis in the summer after engineering a run of 10 wins in their past 11 games since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho in December.
But Solskjaer brushed off the speculation, which will surely hit fever pitch should the Red Devils get past a PSG side shorn of Neymar and Edinson Cavani - claiming there were still a "few more months for me to do whatever I can do for the club".
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, he was brimming with confidence as he declared: "If ever there was a time for us to play big games, it's now."
Asked if he had any inkling he would be in the dugout when the last-16 draw was made in December, he said: "Of course, I didn't know. I was watching it with my son Noah and said, 'Wow that is a tough challenge'. But we have given ourselves the best possible opportunity in the way we have gone into tomorrow's game.
"When Manchester United ring and ask you to help, you say yes. The Champions League is a fantastic tournament. It is a test for our whole team.
"I have loved every single minute of it. We knew we had a big challenge in front of us because we were far behind in the league, confidence was low after Liverpool, but they have responded fantastically.
"I don't think we could be in a better frame of mind and looking forward to the next few games.
"We are confident. We have found what team we have, we are looking like a team, and we are agreeing on how we should approach games."
France forward Anthony Martial, who sat alongside the manager, agreed it was "easier to play this style of football compared to (the) previous style we were asked to play" in a dig at Mourinho.
Solskjaer warned his opposite number Thomas Tuchel that when United "are on song, not many teams enjoy their nights at Old Trafford", he also revealed the plan to take the game to the opposition.
He added: "It's about always believing in yourself. If you asked other managers who played against Sir Alex (Ferguson's) teams, the pace and the tempo going forward were key.
"I have three good forwards (Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku), as well as (Alexis) Sanchez and (Jesse) Lingard. They can challenge PSG's defence."

THE GOOD OLE UNITED WAY
It's about always believing in yourself. If you asked other managers who played against Sir Alex (Ferguson's) teams, the pace and the tempo going forward were key. I have three good forwards myself. They can challenge PSG's defence.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United interim manager, confident that his rejuvenated side can pose a real threat to Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League last-16 clash.

While his managerial record in domestic competitions with United stands up to scrutiny, this will be his first test against elite European competition.
But he remains far from cowed at playing under the floodlights.
Recalling how "the biggest nights of my career have been Champions League nights", the 45-year-old, who scored the winner in the 1999 final which helped the club secure the treble, said: "Both the supporters and players have been looking forward to a night like this because they have always been special."
Solskjaer also dismissed suggestions that a PSG side without Cavani, Neymar and Thomas Meunier would be there for the taking, insisting it made them "more unpredictable".
He added: "Any team that are missing players will feel the effect, but that will give the others the chance."

New title sponsor AIA wants to promote active lifestyle

New title sponsor AIA wants to promote active lifestyle

Just hours before the 2019 Singapore Premier League (SPL) kicked off with the Community Shield last night, the country's only professional sports league received a boost with the unveiling of a new title sponsor.
AIA Singapore inked a two-year deal and the insurance group's logo will be emblazoned on the back of the jerseys of all nine clubs.
AIA, who are also the shirt sponsors of English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur and had appointed David Beckham as its ambassador, takes over from previous co-title sponsors Great Eastern and Hyundai.
Although details of the sponsorship were not disclosed at the signing ceremony at Jalan Besar Stadium yesterday, The Sunday Times understands that not only will the company provide insurance coverage for SPL players, the deal includes a cash component as well.
Patrick Teow, chief executive officer of AIA Singapore, said: "This sponsorship is not just about the money, we want to put in time and effort to help the Singapore Premier League reach its objectives.
"The FAS' (Football Association of Singapore) values are aligned with ours, so it was a natural choice for us to work with them."
AIA, which is celebrating its centennial this year, will work with FAS for opportunities to leverage on the SPL clubs' ties with the communities and schools to encourage youth development and conduct other outreach activities to promote an active and healthy lifestyle.
FAS president Lim Kia Tong said: "With AIA Singapore's existing ties to football and notable presence in the Asia-Pacific region, we believe that this partnership will help us to achieve our goal of improving the vibrancy of local football and raising the standards of football in Singapore.
"In line with the FAS' objective of increasing participation at the grassroots level, there are plans to work together to reach out and target the community, especially the youth.
"I am certain that, together with AIA Singapore, we will be able to do more and we look forward to having a fruitful partnership."
