Football: 'Spineless, shameful' PSG stars face fury at training, Balotelli hits winner against old club Nice

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain players ran a gauntlet of hate and abuse after they invited 500 of their die-hard fans to witness a training session on Sunday (March 10), having earlier been blasted as "shameless" and "spineless".
Just days after their last-minute exit at the hands of Manchester United in the Champions League, the French giants' decision to invite some fans back to the Parc des Princes spectacularly backfired.
The squad's first get-together since Wednesday's last-16 defeat was switched after the words "Shameful! Spineless" and "Respect us" were graffitied at their Camp de Loges training base on Friday.
The 500 or so PSG 'Ultras' allowed into the ground two days later then screamed "Bunch of bastards" and "Show us your balls" towards the players on the field, according to videos posted on social media.
Captain Thiago Silva and defender Marquinhos attempted to calm the crowd by pleading on the public address system but their pleas were drowned out by further verbal abuse, newspaper Le Parisian reported.
The taunting, as well as the noise of firecrackers and smoke bombs, echoed around the stadium and could be heard outside the ground.
PSG's game at Nantes last weekend was postponed, although they remain well clear of second-placed Lille and all but assured a sixth Ligue 1 title in seven seasons.

'We spoilt the party'

Earlier in the day PSG's star striker Kylian Mbappe said he was left "stunned" by PSG's gut-wrenching midweek exit.
"I'm stunned. I haven't been able to sleep," he told TF1 in an interview.
Thomas Tuchel's men are also through to the last four of the French Cup, but Mbappe admitted it was hard to look ahead to the rest of the season with the pain of the defeat still raw.
"Honestly, it's hard to give it too much thought because the Champions League was our goal. The stadium was full for a magnificent occasion, we spoilt the party. We didn't want to ruin it but in the end we did."
However, the 20-year-old allayed any fears among PSG fans that his immediate future could lie elsewhere in the wake of the club's latest European failure.
"I think I will be here, that's guaranteed even," he said.
"With this elimination and all the problems it's going to create, there's no point in my personal situation being added to it. So there, that's clear and precise."
Meanwhile, in Ligue 1 on Sunday, controversial figure Mario Balotelli scored the decisive goal in Marseille's 1-0 win against his former club Nice for his fifth goal in seven matches for the side he joined in January.

Lille trail far behind

Lille kept a firm grip on second place, 14 points behind PSG, as Nicolas Pepe scored his 17th league goal of the season to beat nine-man Saint-Etienne 1-0.
Stephane Bahoken scored a 92nd-minute equaliser to claim a point for Angers at Montpellier as it finished 2-2 and Toulouse overcame Guingamp 1-0, thanks to Yaya Sanogo's first half effort.
Rennes followed up their 3-1 Europa League heroics against Arsenal on Thursday with a repeat result against lowly Caen.

Champions League return is Emery's first priority

Champions League return is Emery's first priority
LONDON • Arsenal manager Unai Emery knows that the top-four battle is out of his hands, with his team on 66 points and two behind fourth-placed Chelsea with two matches left in the Premier League season.
Still, he has urged the Gunners to carry on fighting because playing in the Champions League again following an absence of two seasons is the club's "first objective".
They host Brighton today after losing four of their past five league matches before a trip to Burnley for their final game of the season.
Said Emery: "If we win against Brighton, we are going to the last match against Burnley with the possibility to be in the top four.
"It's not in our hands, but we need to win our matches and the first is Sunday. It's not easy to win each match, for us and for other teams, but the focus for us is to win against Brighton for different situations.
"We are going to play the last match at home and we want to finish at the Emirates with a victory.
"The first objective is to finish in the top four."
They have another route to Europe's top club competition - as winners of the second-tier Europa League, which Emery won three times in a row with Sevilla from 2014 to 2016. The Gunners lead Valencia 3-1 after the first leg of their semi-final last Thursday.
Despite doing things the hard way and his recent hiccups, the Spaniard is happy with his first season in charge at the London club.
"Our progress, I think - when we started the season, we lost against Manchester City and Chelsea and we worked for this process, little by little and, at the end of the season now, we are with this possibility," he said.
"I think when we started we would have been happy to have today these two opportunities in the Premier League and Europa League to reach our target."

Football: Liverpool are Champions League contenders: Klopp

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp has buried the hatchet of his old rivalry with Bayern Munich but wants Liverpool to prove they are Champions League contenders by beating the German champions in the first leg of their last-16 tie today.
Bayern have won the Bundesliga title for the past six years since Borussia Dortmund claimed back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012 under Klopp, who also lost the 2013 Champions League final to the Bavarian giants.
The animosity between both sides was further heightened after the five-time European Cup winners picked off some of his best players in Mario Gotze, Mats Hummels and Robert Lewandowski.
But, at his pre-match press conference yesterday, Klopp claimed "it was nothing" and he no longer had any hard feelings.
He said: "There were never any negative things with Bayern but, when we played them or when they bought our players, how could I be happy and say, 'Great, I'll bring him in my car'. In these moments, I was not happy, but it is long ago."
While Liverpool have not won the Champions League since 2005, they came close to adding to their five crowns last season, only to lose to Real Madrid in the final.
Klopp feels the fact his side are now thought of as European heavyweights is an indication of their progress since he took over in 2015.

HIGH HOPES
Being not only part of the competition but people thinking we can beat Bayern, that's a big thing. The story so far is a nice one but not finished yet.
JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, on the Reds being resurgent in Europe after making it to the Champions League final last season.

HAIL THE 12TH MAN
In Germany, a lot of people talk now about the atmosphere at Anfield. There was a lot of talk that we are maybe the most emotional club in world football.
KLOPP, on the effect of the Anfield faithful on opposing sides.

He said: "The best thing of all the things we did so far since we are together is that we are a real competitor again.
"Being not only part of the competition but people thinking we can beat Bayern, that's a big thing. The story so far is a nice one but not finished yet."
The German is also not the only Reds member who has a past history with Bayern, with Xherdan Shaqiri relishing the opportunity to lock horns against his former club, where he enjoyed 21/2 "amazing" seasons from 2012-15.
Joel Matip and Fabinho are expected to form a makeshift centre-back pairing with Virgil van Dijk suspended and Joe Gomez out, although Klopp is prepared to "wait minute by minute to see if there is a chance or not" for Dejan Lovren.
Niko Kovac also has his own concerns, with Jerome Boateng, Arjen Robben and Corentin Tolisso all sidelined and Thomas Muller banned, but Franck Ribery will play a part after travelling to Merseyside on a later flight after becoming a new father.
However, Klopp is confident their famed "12th man" can spur his side on as they seek to overcome their less-than-ideal defensive situation to take a lead to the Allianz Arena on March 13.
The 51-year-old added: "In Germany, a lot of people talk now about the atmosphere at Anfield. There was a lot of talk that we are maybe the most emotional club in world football.
"Emotion, in my opinion, is a very positive thing, so let's show that tomorrow."

Football: Tottenham climb to third, Cardiff near drop

MANCHESTER (REUTERS) - Lucas Moura's first Premer League hat-trick helped Tottenham Hotspur climb above Chelsea into third after a 4-0 victory over bottom side Huddersfield Town on Saturday (April 13).
With Chelsea not in action until Sunday when they take on title-chasing Liverpool, Spurs cruised past the already-relegated Yorkshire side at their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to move on to 67 points, one ahead of Maurizio Sarri's side.
Spurs also forged four points clear of their neighbours Arsenal, who travel to Watford on Monday.
Two Paul Pogba penalties earned a lethargic Manchester United a 2-1 victory over West Ham United and lifted them above Arsenal into fifth place.
"They played better than us, it is fair to say, I don't think anyone will disagree," United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after his side secured only a second win in their last six matches in all competitions.
"We got away with it, sometimes we have lost when we should have won, so over a season it evens itself out."
At the other end of the table, Cardiff City edged closer to the drop with a 2-0 defeat at Burnley, while Brighton & Hove Albion's third successive league defeat, a humiliating 5-0 home loss to Bournemouth, heightened their relegation fears.
In the absence of the injured Harry Kane and the rested Son Heung-min, though, Spurs still made it three wins out of three at their inspiring new home, Victor Wanyama's early goal being followed by Lucas's treble, which featured two late strikes.
The victory was an important one for Tottenham, who face a daunting trip to league leaders Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday, before the same fixture takes place in the Premier League next weekend.

"After the game when Harry got injured everyone believed Sonny was going to step up and is going to be the man, but we have seen today Lucas got a hat-trick and it was an unbelievable afternoon for him," Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said.
"It is going to help and bring him confidence. We have ahead a very tough period, two games against Manchester City and then Brighton."

CARDIFF EDGE CLOSER TO DROP

Five points from safety, Cardiff travelled to fellow relegation candidates Burnley knowing they need to start picking up points with time running out this season, but they found themselves behind just after the half-hour mark.
Chris Wood's close-range header did the damage, with the New Zealand international making sure of the win in stoppage time, inflicting a third successive defeat on Cardiff, who have just five games left to avoid the drop.
Brighton are anything but safe in 17th after slipping to a third successive defeat of their own, with Bournemouth's comprehensive victory moving them onto 41 points with safety in sight.
Brighton and Cardiff meet on Tuesday at the Amex Stadium, where victory for Brighton would leave them eight points clear of the effectively doomed Welsh club.
Elsewhere, 16th-placed Southampton also moved one step closer to survival with a 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, while relegated Fulham secured just their fifth league win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Everton. Sunday's action kicks off with second-placed Manchester City facing a tough trip to Crystal Palace - one of the few sides to have beaten Pep Guardiola's men this season.

Football: Kyoga Nakamura stars as Albirex Niigata thump Home United 4-0 in the SPL

SINGAPORE - Birthday boy Kyoga Nakamura was the toast of Albirex Niigata, as the White Swans thrashed Home United 4-0 in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) at the Jurong East Stadium on Saturday (April 27).
Home had no answer for the former Japan Under-17 midfielder, who turned 23 on Friday (April 25) and scored a brace on Saturday, with all four goals coming in the first half.
White Swans coach Keiji Shigetomi praised his No.10, saying: "He can score, dictate the game, and help in our build-up play.
"As captain, his presence in the team is very important, especially in attack."
Nakamura models his game after Manchester City playmaker David Silva and former Barcelona schemer Andres Iniesta, and plays in a similar role to the two, drifting between midfield and attack.
And just as the two Spanish maestros often do, Nakamura provided the cutting edge in the final third for his side, which ultimately decided the outcome of a match that was otherwise fairly even.
With just over a minute into the match, Nakamura's tricky feet fooled Home defender Faizal Roslan into tripping him inside the penalty area. He dusted himself off to fire past goalkeeper Nazri Sabri and put his side in front.

Daizo Horikoshi then stole in at the near post to put Albirex 2-0 up in the 21st minute, before he turned providerin the 39th minute, when his shot was parried into the path of Daniel Martens, giving the 20-year-old Singaporean an easy tap-in for his first SPL goal for the Japanese side.
With six minutes added to the first half - during which referee Edwin Lee fell and injured his arm - Nakamura then grabbed his second and Albirex's fourth, winning the ball in midfield and jinking past Faizal before firing a shot from distance that went in off the post.
"After we got the penalty and goal in the first minute, Home had to attack and left gaps behind for us to exploit," said Shigetomi.
Home saw most of the ball in the second half but could not conjure a clear scoring opportunity. The closest they came to pulling a goal back was through substitute Hafiz Nor's shot from distance, which Albirex goalkeeper Kengo Fukudome tipped wide despite being out of position.
Home interim coach Noh Rahman said Nakamura was one of Albirex's players he had singled out before the game as a danger man, but also described the goals his side conceded as "giveaways".

The Protectors have no time to sulk over the defeat, though. They leave for Indonesia on Sunday morning for an AFC Cup game against PSM Makassar on Tuesday, before returning to Singapore and then flying off again to Brunei to take on league leaders Brunei DPMM next Saturday.
"We need to review today's game and look at the areas we can improve, but as you know we don't have much time," said Noh, who added it was frustrating to watch his side dominate possession but not score.
"We're travelling tomorrow for a different competition which is equally important, and it is a question of character now for the players.
"Today is obviously not a good result for our boys but we are looking for them to bounce back from this."

The former Barca captain, who made an all-time record of 767 appearances for the Spanish champions while winning 133 caps for Spain, confirmed he would be hanging up his boots in an open letter sent to members of the Spanish media on Thursday.
The statement read: "This is my last season as a player, but I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds for me as a coach.
"It has been a privilege to play football until 39 years of age and now, I would like to finish the season on a high by winning the Emir Cup and getting to the next phase of the Asian Champions League."
Revealing that his coaching style would reflect the way he was known for playing the game, he added: "I love seeing teams take the initiative on the field, play attacking football and return to the essence of what we all love from our childhood days - possession football."
Xavi made his debut for Barcelona in 1998 after coming through the club's famed La Masia academy and soon became the heartbeat of the team's midfield, winning eight LaLiga titles and four Champions League crowns before joining Qatari side Al Sadd in 2015.
He was one of the key players when Spain won their first and only World Cup in 2010 as well as their European Championship triumphs in 2008 and 2012, before eventually retiring from the national team after their early 2014 World Cup exit.
Last month, he helped Al Sadd win the Qatar Stars League, the country's top flight, while the team have also progressed to the quarter-finals of the Emir Cup.
His former teammates and clubs also paid tribute after news of his impending retirement broke, with Barcelona hailing him as a "football legend" on their Twitter account.
Andres Iniesta, who combined with Xavi to become one of the game's greatest double acts, called him "the best partner".
The midfielder, who now plays for J-League outfit Vissel Kobe, tweeted: "A privilege to grow and share at your side all my career and the best moments. Thank you for everything you've taught the world of football."

Mata could add to Spain's bite

VALLETTA • The stark contrast between Spain's embarrassment of riches in midfield, which has long been the envy of most European teams, and their well-documented woes up front remains a curious tale.
It is a problem dating back to the 2014 World Cup when then national coach Vicente del Bosque turned to Brazil-born Diego Costa to lead the line.
But the Atletico Madrid striker, excluded from the squad against Malta owing to injury, has never fully convinced in the role, nor the likes of Iago Aspas, Paco Alcacer, Lucas Vazquez and Alvaro Morata.
Their paucity in forward options was again evident in the 2-1 Euro 2020 qualifying opener win over Norway, when Spain needed a Sergio Ramos penalty to edge past Norway on home soil.
The hosts missed a hatful of chances last Saturday, with Morata particularly culpable, and while La Roja are unlikely to be troubled today when they travel to lowly Malta, coach Luis Enrique has a conundrum - that neither del Bosque nor predecessor Julen Lopetegui could solve - on his hands.
While many are expecting the former Barcelona boss to keep faith with Morata, who he defended over the weekend, there could be a place in the team for a second striker, with their opponents not expected to put up much of a fight.
Getafe forward Jaime Mata is a late bloomer, having never played in his country's top flight before this season.

MIDFIELD TALENT
He has been very good, he's an ice-cold player and he is intelligent.
LUIS ENRIQUE, Spain coach, on Valencia midfielder Dani Parejo.

However, as LaLiga's leading Spanish goalscorer this term with 13 goals, the 30-year-old has played an integral role in his fourth-placed side's unlikely push for a Champions League spot.
Having made his international debut from the bench in Valencia, Mata will likely figure in Enrique's thoughts as Spain look to rack up the goals against the likely Group F whipping boys, who have lost all seven of their previous meetings.
Thankfully for the Catalan, creating opportunities has never been an issue for the 2010 World Cup champions, who can call upon the likes of Sergio Busquets, Rodri, Dani Ceballos and Sergio Canales.
Dani Parejo is another player who has staked his claim to be in the starting line-up.
Despite the Valencia midfielder having just a single cap before the Norway meeting, Enrique declared he was "very happy that (Parejo) is with us. He has been very good, he's an ice-cold player and he is intelligent".
The 48-year-old coach also hailed former winger-turned-right-back Jesus Navas, who before the weekend was last capped five years ago, adding: "It's key to have players in a squad that overflow, and he has been at a spectacular level."

Football: Last-gasp Norwich creep closer to Premier League

LONDON (AFP) - Norwich City needed an equaliser in the seventh minute of injury time to salvage a 2-2 draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Friday (April 19) as they edged closer to the Premier League.
Mario Vrancic was fouled just outside the area by Marco Matias and stepped up to curl the resulting free-kick past Cameron Dawson into the top corner.
The result leaves Norwich five points clear of both Sheffield United and Leeds with three games to play in the Championship.
Marco Stiepermann's long-range shot gave Norwich a 19th-minute lead at Carrow Road before Fernando Forestieri equalised before half-time with a long-range drive.
Steven Fletcher gave Wednesday a 53rd-minute lead before Norwich saved themselves at the death.
Marcelo Bielsa's hopes of taking Leeds United back to the Premier League after a 15-year absence through automatic promotion suffered a huge blow with 10-man Wigan beating them 2-1.
A Gavin Massey double saw the tier two strugglers come from behind to silence the 30,000-plus home supporters and leave Leeds third behind Sheffield United on goal difference with three matches remaining.
Sheffield United had earlier moved back into second after emerging 2-0 winners against 10-man Nottingham Forest.
Leeds looked to be well on their way to three points when Wigan's Cedric Kipre was red-carded for handling the ball on the line.
Even though Pablo Hernandez's penalty was saved the hosts went 1-0 up soon afterwards with Patrick Bamford scoring.
However, Massey levelled for Wigan a minute before the break with a stunning strike and added a second with a header just after the hour mark.
Massey's double gives Wigan a five-point advantage over third from bottom Rotherham - who lost 4-3 to Swansea.
Second-half goals from Mark Duffy and Enda Stevens gave Sheffield United a vital win - after Yohan Benalouane received a straight red two minutes into the second half - to end a run of two draws.
"They (Forest) are a good side with an experienced manager so it was good to get in front, close the game out and get back to what we do," United manager Chris Wilder told Sky Sports.
"It's been a great effort by everyone and we are not done yet. It's been a tough week but we came roaring back," added the 51-year-old Englishman, who was voted Championship Manager of the Year by his peers.
United had looked blunt up front in a goalless first half with their talismanic leading scorer Billy Sharp sitting out the game with a hamstring injury.
However, once Benalouane was sent for an early shower having brought down David McGoldrick there was no doubt about the result.
Duffy's brilliant curled effort beat Forest goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon to put them 1-0 up, but the Romanian international saved his side from going further behind a minute later as his brilliant reflex save denied McGoldrick.
However, he could do nothing five minutes from full-time as Stevens slotted home into the far corner for his first goal at home in over a year.
At the other end of the table, Bolton's nightmare season saw them join Ipswich in the third tier after they lost 2-0 to Aston Villa.

Football: Liverpool back on top as Shaqiri sinks United, Arsenals unbeaten run ends

LONDON (AFP) – Liverpool powered back to the top of the Premier League as Xherdan Shaqiri inspired a 3-1 win over bitter rivals Manchester United, while Arsenal’s 22-match unbeaten run was shattered by a shock 3-2 defeat at Southampton on Sunday (Dec 16).
Jurgen Klopp’s side made it six successive league victories thanks to Shaqiri’s late double after United’s Jesse Lingard had cancelled out Sadio Mane’s opener at Anfield.
Shaqiri’s superb substitute cameo allowed Liverpool to reopen a one point lead over second placed Manchester City after the champions had knocked the Reds out of first place with their win against Everton on Saturday.
Liverpool’s first win in their last six meetings with United ended a frustrating streak against the Old Trafford outfit that dated back to March 2016, while also extending their unbeaten start to the league season to 17 matches.
While that was cause for pre-Christmas revelry on the Kop, more significantly, Liverpool’s refusal to be subdued by a United team set up by Jose Mourinho with five defenders was another statement of intent as they chase a first English league title since 1990.
Senegal winger Mane put Liverpool ahead in the 24th minute when he broke away from Ashley Young to meet Fabinho’s sublime pass with a nimble piece of chest control before shooting past David De Gea.
United equalised against the run of play in the 33rd minute as Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker made a hash of catching Romelu Lukaku’s low cross and Lingard finished off the rebound.

Alisson’s error didn’t prove costly as Switzerland midfielder Shaqiri struck within three minutes of coming off the bench, his shot flicking off the hapless Young into the roof of the net in the 73rd minute.
Shaqiri ensured Liverpool would return to the top in the 80th minute with a stinging strike that clipped the foot of United defender Eric Bailly on its way past De Gea.
United are now 19 points behind Liverpool in sixth place as the pressure mounts on Mourinho following another wretched display.  Meanwhile, Unai Emery admitted Arsenal need to fix their leaky defence after Southampton’s Charlie Austin punished a howler from Bernd Leno to stun the Gunners.
Austin settled a thrilling clash at St Mary’s when he headed home with just five minutes left after Arsenal goalkeeper Leno misjudged Shane Long’s cross.  Southampton had twice taken the lead through Danny Ings, only for Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s brace to draw Arsenal level on each occasion.
Leno’s mistake handed Arsenal their first defeat in 15 league games and brought a stunning halt to their longest unbeaten run in all competitions since 2007.
Emery’s fifth-placed team had not lost since a 3-2 defeat at Chelsea in August and the north Londoners’ first setback since the close-season leaves them three points behind the fourth-placed Blues, who won 2-1 at Brighton on Sunday.
Conceding Arsenal need to tighten up at the back, Emery said: “We haven’t conceded a lot of chances but today they scored three goals. That is a lot so we need to improve with this.
“We need to do some analysis on how we can improve and do better.”
Chelsea put a week of negative headlines for the behaviour of their fans behind them on the field thanks to an inspired Eden Hazard at Brighton.
The Belgian provided his ninth assist of the season for Pedro to open the scoring and then chalked up his ninth goal of the campaign, but first in 13 games for club and country.
Solly March pulled one back with his first goal of the campaign, but Chelsea held on to restore some positivity after Blues fans were involved in alleged racist abuse of Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and anti-semitic chants during a midweek Europa League tie.
“He’s very able to come out and play with his team-mates, very able to create spaces. Now, in that position, he has to improve in attacking the box,” Sarri said of Hazard’s display as the spearhead of Chelsea’s attack.

Football: Watford's Andre Gray strikes late winner to spoil Brendan Rodgers' Leicester debut against former side

(REUTERS) - Watford's Andre Gray scored a stoppage-time winner as Leicester began life under new boss Brendan Rodgers in underwhelming fashion, suffering a 2-1 defeat at his former club in the English Premier League on Sunday (March 3).
Watford clinched victory in the second minute of added time as Troy Deeney latched on to a poor goal kick by Leicester custodian Kasper Schmeichel and fed substitute Gray, who held his nerve to score.
Watford had taken the lead through Deeney in the fifth minute, as the striker got his body across Wes Morgan and rose well to head home Gerard Deulofeu's whipped ball from a free kick for his first goal in 10 matches at Vicarage Road.
Leicester responded after the break, as Jamie Vardy ran onto a fine through ball from midfielder Youri Tielemens and dinked his finish over Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster for his 10th league goal of the season.
Despite conceding early, Leicester looked lively as the first half wore on but were unable to convert their good build-up play into clear chances, as Watford comfortably maintained their defensive discipline.
Watford began the second half on the front foot as Deulofeu combined well with Roberto Pereyra to tee up Abdoulaye Doucoure, whose curling shot from distance was swatted away by Schmeichel.
Vardy, who endured a heavy collision with Foster earlier in the match, was substituted minutes after scoring as he appeared to suffer a delayed reaction to the knock.
Watford, eighth on 43 points, are at champions Manchester City next, while 11th-placed Leicester (35) host second-bottom Fulham.

Football: Klopp insists 'the tie is not over' as he backs Liverpool to recover from Bayern draw

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool are still firmly in contention for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals despite their dour 0-0 draw against Bayern Munich at home on Tuesday.
Klopp's side were frustrated by a disciplined Bayern display in the first leg of the last-16 tie at Anfield.
The usually free-scoring Reds now face a daunting task in the second leg at the Allianz Arena on March 13.
Bundesliga champions Bayern have lost only two of their last 26 home Champions League games, winning 22 of those.
But Liverpool boss Klopp is convinced his side have nothing to fear in Germany.
"The positive is of course the result is OK, the best draw we can get. Yes we can play better, we should play better," the German said.
"The tie is not over. We said that. We had to create the basis tonight that we can use in the second leg.
"It was a big fight. We had the bigger chances. It's not a dream result but it is a good one. We can work with that."
Liverpool's progress to last season's Champions League final was marked by a series of swaggering displays at Anfield.
But Klopp admitted the well-drilled Bayern defence did not allow Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane to click into gear.
"It was not a day when we clicked in the first minute. Bayern are physically very strong and it was difficult to come through," he said.
"We made our lives more difficult with the last pass today.
"I don't know how often, at least 10 times there was a promising situation or a good counter-attack. We immediately shot into their legs, it doesn't make much sense.
"We had our moments but in these moments we have to score. Then the game can change completely."
Klopp had expected Bayern, hit by injuries and suspension, to adopt a cautious approach and the result was a hard-fought but hardly action-packed encounter.
"When Bayern are in trouble, they get really serious like this. That was how it was. I didn't expect them to play attacking football," he said.
"We played against an outstanding side. I'm not over the moon, but I'm completely OK with the result.
"It was not a game we will remember in 20 years."

Football: Neymar, sponsors suspend some ad campaigns after rape allegation

SAO PAULO (REUTERS) - Brazilian soccer star Neymar's agents said on Friday (June 7) that he and some of his sponsors had agreed to suspend some advertising campaigns following an allegation that he raped a woman in Paris last month.
NR Sports, which holds the rights to Neymar's name and image, said in a statement that no sponsorship contract had been cancelled and it did not provide details on what ad campaigns had been suspended.
"All the partners, for obvious reasons, are alert and aware of the unfolding events," the NR Sports statement said in part.
Najila Trindade de Souza accused Neymar, 27, of raping her at a Paris hotel last month.
Sao Paulo police are investigating the accusation against Neymar, who plays his club soccer with French champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The Brazilian woman told investigators that she met Neymar on Instagram.
Neymar suggested they meet in person in Paris and he paid for her flight and her hotel room.
After media reports on the allegation, Neymar posted a video on Instagram, in which he denied the accusations, said he was a victim of extortion and shared messages he exchanged with the woman, including racy photos he had received.

Neymar denies rape accusation

On Thursday, Nike said it was "very concerned" about the rape accusation, raising questions about its sponsorship of one of the sport's most famous players.
A press representative for Mastercard in Brazil confirmed to Reuters that the company had planned an advertising campaign to coincide with this month's Copa America tournament but she did not confirm reports in Brazil's three biggest newspapers that Mastercard had decided to suspend Neymar's featuring in it.
US press representatives for Mastercard did not reply to requests for comment.

Football: Neymar heads to Qatar for medical assessment

PARIS (AFP) - Neymar will travel to Qatar to undergo a "complete assessment" six weeks into his recovery from a fractured right foot, the club said on Thursday (March 8).
The Brazil forward watched on forlornly from the stands at the Parc des Princes as PSG crashed out of the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday to Manchester United on away goals following a 3-1 defeat.
"Neymar Jr will travel to Aspetar (sports clinic) in Qatar for the next 3 days as scheduled in the initial recovery plan," the club wrote on its Twitter account.
"He will undertake a complete assessment after six weeks of his injury. He will be accompanied by a medical team from PSG."
The 27-year-old damaged the fifth metatarsal in his right foot in a French Cup win over Strasbourg on January 23 and was ruled out for 10 weeks.
PSG were hoping he would be healed enough to get back on the pitch in time for a potential Champions League quarter-final in April, but the French side suffered a humiliating exit as United sensationally overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit.

Spurs' New 'Superhero'

Spurs' New 'Superhero'

LONDON • On June 1, Tottenham have a shot at the ultimate prize.
If they overcome Liverpool in their first Champions League final, there will surely be statues erected, not just for Lucas Moura, but for all the players and manager Mauricio Pochettino.
As it stands, Brazil forward Moura is in line to have a bust outside their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium alongside one already planned for Bill Nicholson, the club's most successful manager with eight major trophies, including the 1961 double.
Christian Eriksen led the calls for his teammate to be enshrined after his hat-trick ensured Spurs went through 3-3 on away goals after the second leg of their Champions League semi-final tie with Ajax on Wednesday.
Having lost the first leg 1-0, Spurs got off to the worst possible start in Amsterdam, going 2-0 down on the night to goals from Matthijs de Ligt and Hakim Ziyech.
The reverse leg turned on its head after half-time, however, as Moura scored twice in quick succession before netting a 96th-minute effort to complete his treble - only the fifth player in the competition's history to do so in the semi-final stage.

  • 5th min
AJAX 1-0 (AGGREGATE: AJAX 2-0) An early goal like the first-leg winner by Donny van de Beek. Captain Matthijs de Ligt gets away from Kieran Trippier into the box and outjumps Dele Alli to plant a header that leaves Hugo Lloris rooted.
    35th
AJAX 2-0 (AGG: AJAX 3-0) Hakim Ziyech's wicked left-foot curler, set up by Dusan Tadic, comes as Trippier fails to track back after looking for a foul in vain for a Tadic high foot. Game over?
    55th
AJAX 2-1 (AGG: AJAX 3-1) Not quite. A sweeping Spurs counter-attack, started by Danny Rose who nutmegs de Ligt, ends up with Lucas Moura reducing the deficit after exchanging passes with Alli. Game on.
    59th
2-2 (AGG: AJAX 3-2) A goalkeeper-defender mix-up, created by the hugely influential substitute Fernando Llorente's point-blank effort, allows Moura to make space in a crowded box to set up a grandstand finish.
    96th
SPURS 3-2 (AGG: 3-3) As the clock just ticks past the five minutes of added time, Llorente knees the ball to Alli, who lays it off cleverly for the charging Moura to slot into the corner for his hat-trick. Spurs go through on away goals.

The Denmark midfielder Eriksen said of the 26-year-old: "Today it was non-tactical, more of a fight and heart performance and Lucas Moura. He deserves it.

CAST IN STONE
Today it was non-tactical, more of a fight and heart performance and Lucas Moura. He deserves it. It has been a roller-coaster of a season, for him to get us in the final, I hope he gets a statue in England after this.
CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN, Tottenham midfielder, on Brazilian teammate Lucas Moura.

"It has been a roller-coaster of a season, for him to get us in the final, I hope he gets a statue in England after this. We are blown away."
Ironically, Moura, whose January 2018 arrival remains the last player Spurs have signed, would probably not have started the second leg had injured striker Harry Kane been fit.
But Pochettino has instilled an ethos that "the team is more important than any name".
The Argentinian, who has yet to win a major honour as a manager, can now end the term with the biggest prize in European football.
With the endgame close, Pochettino was understandably in tears, branding Moura a "superhero".
He said: "To have brought the club to the final of the Champions League is very close to a miracle.
"No one believed in us at the beginning of the season, we are so close, almost in the top four and in Madrid, playing the final.
"This amazing season in our new home and this chapter that we are going to close now, to close the chapter playing a final, and if we win, it would be an amazing book."
Pochettino also spoke of "no pain, no gain" in the aftermath - in reference to his five-year stint since arriving from Southampton, a period in which he has fought to establish the club as a top-four force in the Premier League and regulars in the Champions League.
Rival fans have long mocked his team's history of perennial underachievement as "doing a Spurs".
However, that has changed under Pochettino despite the lack of silverware. The 47-year-old has worked wonders with a comparatively smaller squad to the other "Big Six" teams and a non-existent budget; they are the only club in league history not to have bought any players in the last two transfer windows.
The possibilities for the future are endless. They are overwhelming favourites to finish in the top four again for their fourth straight Champions League campaign.
And while Spurs have won just one of their last 14 matches against the Reds, there will be no shortage of belief from Pochettino's players.
They might even have Kane back for the trip to Madrid, with the England striker telling BT Sport "rehab is going well".
For now, Pochettino will bask in the glow of a "50-year highlight" for Spurs, saying: "There will be time to talk about Liverpool.
"They are heroes too, and it's going to be an amazing final between two English teams."

Football: Atletico make Barca wait by squeezing past Valladolid

Football: Atletico make Barca wait by squeezing past Valladolid

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona were made to wait to retain their La Liga title on Saturday (April 27) as closest challengers Atletico Madrid scraped past strugglers Real Valladolid 1-0 after surviving late VAR penalty drama.
Ernesto Valverde's side would have been crowned champions for the eighth time in 11 seasons ahead of their home clash with Levante later had Atletico lost to relegation-threatened Valladolid, but Joaquin Fernandez's own goal was enough to seal the three points and delay the Barca title party.
However they had to endure a nervy final few minutes in which Jan Oblak had to be at his best and they survived a late VAR check over what looked like a clear Santiago Arias handball in the area.
"It's controversial, a ball that hits the hand and the referee's decision is to see if it's voluntary or not," said Saul Niguez, whose cross led to their fortunate winner and who gave away a penalty in a similar fashion during Wednesday's 3-2 win over Valencia.
The victory means second-placed Atletico are six points behind Barca, who now have to beat Levante at the Camp Nou later in order to take the title with three matches to spare before they host Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals.
Should Barca win as expected, they will hold their nine-point lead over Atleti, who will no longer be able to overtake the Catalans thanks to their inferior head-to-head record.
However Diego Simeone's side will be satisfied they are nine points ahead of local rivals and reigning European champions Real Madrid, who travel to Rayo Vallecano on Sunday amid increasing speculation they will respond to a disappointing season by swooping for Eden Hazard and Neymar.
"It's what we deserve, no more, no less. We've come so far," added Saul.
"There were moments when we wanted to be first and others that I would say no, that's what we deserve."
UNDER-PAR ATLETICO
Valladolid meanwhile stay 17th, just one point and a place away from the relegation zone after a match they will feel they were unlucky to lose.
Atletico were far from their intense best, and the first half was a drab affair enlivened by a few Valladolid pot shots and a fine save from Jordi Masip, who did well to tip away Antoine Griezmann's free-kick.
However they upped their game early in the second half and got the breakthrough in the 66th minute when Joaquin launched himself at Saul's cross from the left and headed the ball past Masip into his own goal.
That didn't stop Valladolid though, and the away side thought they would be given a chance to equalise from the spot with just four minutes left when Arias appeared to handle a cross, only for referee Mario Melero Lopez to give a corner following a long VAR check.
They then forced saves from Oblak before Fernando Calero hit the post with a header two minutes into stoppage time, but they couldn't make their late flurry count.
Earlier on Saturday, Athletic Bilbao and Alaves did their chances of European football next season no favours with a 1-1 draw in the Basque Country.
Seventh-placed Bilbao are five points away from the Champions league places - with Alaves a further three points back - and could also see Valencia and Sevilla take the Europa league further away from them when they take on Eibar and Girona.
