Football: Bayern miss chance to seal title after Leipzig stumble

BERLIN (REUTERS) - Champions Bayern Munich stumbled to a goalless draw at RB Leipzig on Saturday (May 11), missing their chance to seal the Bundesliga title as Borussia Dortmund kept their hopes alive and closed to within two points with one game left.
Bayern, who needed a win to make sure of a record-extending seventh consecutive league title, are on 75 points and will now face a final day examination against Eintracht Frankfurt next week.
Dortmund, who beat Fortuna Duesseldorf 3-2, are on 73 and face Borussia Moenchengladbach next week.
Leipzig are third on 66 and have secured their Champions League spot for next season.
“We want to win this thing next week,” said Bayern’s Thomas Mueller. “We have battled back from nine points behind (late last year). We are very greedy.” The Bavarians missed several good chances with Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski failing to hit the target and also had a Leon Goretzka effort in the second half ruled out after video review.
They face Leipzig again in the German Cup final on May 25.
It was an even more nervous affair at Dortmund, where goals from Christian Pulisic, Thomas Delaney and Mario Gotze eventually sealed a win for the title contenders.
The hosts suffered with a blunder from keeper Marwin Hitz that allowed Duesseldorf back into the game at 1-1 before the hosts then had to sweat it out after a Duesseldorf goal in stoppage time reduced the deficit to 3-2.
Hitz, replacing injured Roman Buerki, also brought down Dodi Lukebakio for a second-half penalty which the forward fired wide.
Hanover 96 and Nuremberg were relegated while VfB Stuttgart beat VfL Wolfsburg 3-0 to hold on to 16th place and will go into a relegation/promotion playoff with the second division’s third-placed team.

Rampant Bernardo Silva is undroppable: Pep Guardiola

LONDON • With an FA Cup semi-final tie against Brighton just three days later, Pep Guardiola must decide how best to shuffle his star-studded Manchester City line-up as they host struggling Cardiff in the Premier League today.
But, despite the embarrassment of riches City possess, one player has remained an almost automatic selection.
Bernardo Silva has appeared in 30 of their 31 league games - starting in 26 - with only goalkeeper Ederson turning out more times for the first XI.
While City forward Raheem Sterling and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk appear to be the front runners to scoop the Player of the Year honours this season, the Portugal midfielder has also made a compelling case to be considered.
Guardiola believes that the form of Silva, who has been a model of consistency all season, "is a consequence of the way he accepts his role".
The Spaniard added: "He works so hard and the rewards are there. Right now, with the way he plays, I cannot do anything else but put him on the pitch and let him play.
"He's so important for us. What he's done for us is the best."

ROLE MODEL
He works so hard and the rewards are there. Right now, with the way he plays, I cannot do anything else but put him on the pitch and let him play.
PEP GUARDIOLA, Manchester City manager, on the impressive contributions Bernardo Silva has made to the team.

ALL FOR ONE
It's most important for the team to keep winning. If it's me scoring or Kun (Sergio Aguero) or Raz (Sterling) or Leroy (Sane) or Riyad (Mahrez), it doesn't really matter.
BERNARDO SILVA, City midfielder, on playing as a team.

Despite having already equalled his personal best of six league goals with seven matches to play, the 24-year-old Silva is not gunning for individual records as "what matters is three points".
Ahead of the game against the Bluebirds, he said: "It's most important for the team to keep winning. If it's me scoring or Kun (Sergio Aguero) or Raz (Sterling) or Leroy (Sane) or Riyad (Mahrez), it doesn't really matter."
However, his manager will certainly need him to be at his creative best after Aguero, the league's top scorer on 19 goals, was ruled out of the meeting with Neil Warnock's men.
Admitting that he "will (have to) see the evolution of the next few days" to determine if the Argentina striker will be fit to travel to Wembley to take on the Seagulls, Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference yesterday: "He didn't train last two days, he is not able to play.
"Aguero and Fabian Delph (are the only ones who are injured). The others are quite well."
The 48-year-old also urged his players to keep their eyes on the remaining prizes, with City still on track for an unprecedented quadruple, although "beating Cardiff is our main target".
He added: "No one said it would be easy. We know it. Everyone is excited about the next weeks, but we also know we can lose everything. It's not complicated. It's amazing to have this opportunity, to be there.
"I saw how good Arsenal are playing (against Newcastle). We have an incredible distance (from them) because we have done so well.
"Then we go to Wembley and we want to win a trophy I have never won, the oldest one."

Football: Sane, Reus seal Germany win over Belarus in Euro 2020 qualifier

BORISOV, Belarus (REUTERS) - Germany eased past hosts Belarus 2-0 with goals from Leroy Sane and Marco Reus on Saturday (June 8) to make it two wins from their first two Euro 2020 Group C qualifiers.
The three-time European champions, who suffered a shock World Cup first-round exit last year before being relegated in the inaugural Nations League, were desperate to build on their opening qualifying win over Netherlands in March.
They took a 13th-minute lead when Sane shook off his marker and fired in from close range.
Belarus responded by forcing a fine save from Manuel Neuer, who punched Nikita Naumov's 30th-minute header over the bar for the hosts' best chance in the game.
The visitors struck again with Reus in the 62nd minute after a clever assist from Matthias Ginter and hit the post through Sane's 84th-minute header.
The result lifted the Germans to six points, three behind leaders Northern Ireland who beat Estonia 2-1 for their third win in three qualifiers.
Belarus suffered their third straight loss and are in last place, having scored only one goal.
"It was a solid performance on which we can build. We want to develop as a team," said Germany assistant coach Marcus Sorg, who replaced Joachim Loew as head coach for the game.
Loew was briefly hospitalised days ago following a sports injury.
"The win was above everything. We had to overcome some challenges against a very defensive opponent. Overall, we did it well," said Sorg, who will also be in charge in Tuesday's qualifier against Estonia.
Earlier on Saturday, Northern Ireland came from a goal down to beat Estonia 2-1 in Tallin.
Conor Washington cancelled out the hosts' lead through Konstantin Vassiljev's low first half free kick and fellow substitute Josh Magennis completed the turnaround in the 80th minute to keep Northern Ireland top of the standings.
They next travel to Belarus on Tuesday.

Football: Mbappe comment hinting at 'somewhere else' throws spanner into the works at PSG

PARIS (REUTERS) - Despite Kylian Mbappe pledging his future to Paris St-Germain following yet another early Champions League exit in March, the France striker is now casting doubt on his intentions for next season.
The 20-year-old added Ligue 1 player of the year to his already impressive list of honours on Sunday (May 19) and took the opportunity to say he wanted "more responsibility" in the future, adding it would be either at PSG or "somewhere else".
The 2018 World Cup winner, who has scored 32 goals in Ligue 1 this season, has been sharing the front line at PSG with Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani and Brazil's Neymar.
"It's a turning point, it was the moment to say it," Mbappe was quoted as saying by L'Equipe on Monday.
"I am whole. When I say something, I mean it. I said it. If it is at PSG, that's good, if it is elsewhere, it is elsewhere."
Mbappe, whose influence at the French champions grew when Neymar was sidelined with a foot injury this year, has always said he would love to play at Real Madrid.
Mbappe's departure would be a huge blow for PSG, who were knocked out of the Champions League last 16 by Manchester United in embarrassing fashion this season.

It would, though, allow them to stabilise their finances after they were probed for an alleged breach of the Financial Fair Play rules.
Proceedings in that case were halted in March when the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld an appeal over a procedural error from continental governing body Uefa.

Football: Corruption-scarred Indonesian football grapples with new match-fixing scandal

JAKARTA (AFP) - Indonesian football's long-running struggle against corruption has been reignited with authorities promising a new crackdown after a senior official was caught trying to bribe a coach, the latest scandal in a league scarred by mismanagement and deadly hooliganism.
But, dogged by years of match-fixing, violence and corruption rife at all levels of the game, analysts say the Southeast Asian country needs to do more than "lip service" to tackle the endemic problems.
On Dec 3, an executive member of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) resigned after a popular television talk show broadcast a recording of him offering the coach of Madura FC a bribe of approximately US$10,000 (S$13,673) to throw a second division game.
Hidayat, who like many Indonesians only uses one name, has been handed a three-year ban from football and fined by a PSSI disciplinary committee.
"Match-fixing exists everywhere, in league 1, 2 and 3. The problem is that the match-fixing issue has never been solved and (perpetrators) punished properly," football analyst Akmal Marhali told AFP.
The PSSI announced the establishment of a special task force to address allegations of match-fixing following the scandal, promising firm action against cheats.
But critics like Marhali say there needs to be more than just "lip service" to solve a problem that so far seems to be out of the grasp of Indonesian authorities.
"Perpetrators feel like they have impunity because there is no law enforcement," Marhali said.
Allegations of match-fixing have swirled around Indonesian football for decades.
Indonesian defender Mursyid Effendi was given a lifetime ban by Fifa after scoring a deliberate own goal in a Tiger Cup match against Thailand in 1998.
The manager of Borneo-based Bontang FC, Camara Fode, received a lifetime ban for ordering his team to lose against PSLS Lhokseumawe, from Aceh, in a Premier League game in 2013. Players from both teams were also suspended.
The following year, several players from both PSS Sleman and PSIS Semarang were banned for life after scoring five deliberate own goals in the final minutes of the match to avoid a playoff clash.
Long-time fans have become so used to mismanagement and corruption in the game that match-fixing is considered an "open secret", Dex Glenniza, managing editor of website Pandit Football, told AFP.
Players, referees, and club administrators are all involved in rigging matches, he said, adding that although gambling is illegal in Indonesia, fans often bet through international gambling websites or local bookies.
Glenniza said funding shortfalls for player salaries and club operations, conflicts of interest within the PSSI and weak law enforcement have all made the game an "easy target" for crime syndicates.
Azwan Karim, who served as secretary general of the PSSI between 2014 and 2016, said the PSSI could not tackle the problem alone.
"The PSSI can only use its football judicial procedures," he told AFP.
"To have a deterrent effect in place, the government should be involved - the police especially."
While it has a low international profile, Indonesia has attracted some Premier League players, including former Chelsea star Michael Essien and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Didier Zokora.
But Indonesian football has been tarnished on the global stage by a host of problems over the years - including months of unpaid wages and the deaths of at least two foreign players who were left unable to afford medical care.
An explosive row between the domestic association and government prompted Fifa to ban Indonesia from international competition in 2015. The ban was lifted last year.
As if to underline the game's struggle with corruption, former PSSI chairman Nurdin Halid once ran the organisation from his jail cell where he was serving time on unrelated graft charges.
Indonesia has in recent years also gained a reputation as Asia's most violent football nation.
In September, 23-year-old Persija Jakarta fan Haringga Sirla was clubbed to death by supporters of arch-rival Persib Bandung outside a stadium in the Javan city of Bandung.
PSSI vice chairman Joko Driyono said the association had a zero tolerance approach to match-fixing, and was ready to work with law enforcement authorities on the issue.
Yet, some observers of the Indonesian game are dubious this will result in firm action.
"No more cherry-picking, anyone who breaks the ethical code and integrity of football must be punished," Marhali, who runs football watchdog Save Our Soccer, said.
"The PSSI should no longer shield those who are involved in match-fixing - we know that some of those involved are PSSI people."

Football: Diehard Malaysian fans sell prized memorabilia to fund trip for AFF Suzuki Cup final against Vietnam

HANOI (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Two die-hard Malaysian fans sold their prized Ultras Malaya memorabilia to fund their trip to Hanoi to watch the return leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup final between Malaysia and Vietnam.
Sallehuddin Mohd Rabani, 35, said he saved some money for the trip by selling his shoes and mufflers used during match days in Malaysia.
"Those memorabilia are really good memories to me. Selling them was painful but I badly wanted to watch Malaysia play in the final in Hanoi," he said, adding that Hanoi was his second away trip for the AFF Suzuki Cup.
In the first leg final on Tuesday (Dec 11), Malaysia came from behind to draw 2-2 with Vietnam at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
Having followed Ultras Malaya since 2010, the technician from Shah Alam said the memorabilia, such as muffers which cost RM200 (S$66), were worth their money because they were limited editions.
"Four years ago, I could not go to Thailand to watch the first leg final in Rajamangala. This year, I told myself I did not want to miss the final match," he said.
Auditor Shahrul Izuan Abdul Kahar, 30, said Ultras Malaya have brought a new culture to Malaysian football and has brought the term "12th man" to a whole new level.

"I used to watch the game like a normal fan but I wanted to be part of Ultras when I saw how spirited they were. Now, I'm with them for every game day in Malaysia. I have been with them since 2012.
"With the Ultras, the atmosphere is different. When we were trailing 0-2 to Vietnam in the first leg, we continued to cheer them on.
"They felt our presence and fought back to draw against Vietnam. We can make the players play better because we motivate them instead of insulting them."
Shahrul too had to sell his memorabilia because he could not save from his salary due to other commitments.
"I had to make sacrifice to here in Hanoi. To me, as long as I get to see Malaysia, I'm happy. Win or lose, I don't care. We're here just to support.
Sallehuddin and Shahrul were part of hundreds of hardcore Malaysian football fans who boarded a special chartered flight to Hanoi by AirAsia on Friday.
AirAsia arranged two return flights for fans.
In total, 345 seats were sold for both flights.

Football: Atletico title bid suffers with defeat at Betis in Morata debut

SEVILLE (REUTERS) - Atletico Madrid fell to their first La Liga defeat in five months as they were beaten 1-0 at Real Betis on Sunday (Feb 3), missing a golden chance to close the gap with leaders Barcelona and slipping six points adrift of the Catalans.
Alvaro Morata made his debut for Atletico after completing a loan move from Chelsea, but it was another former Real Madrid player in Sergio Canales who made the difference.
He scored a penalty midway through the second half to give Betis a victory which took them up to sixth in the table.
Atletico coach Diego Simeone was without five regular starters but was still able to field what looked to be an exciting, attacking lineup with pacey wingers Angel Correa and Thomas Lemar and Morata partnering the talismanic Antoine Griezmann up front.
Barca's 2-2 draw with Valencia a day earlier had given Atletico the opportunity to move within three points of their title rivals yet they struggled to get a hold on the game, and it took a spectacular save from Jan Oblak to prevent Zouhair Feddal heading Betis in front midway through the first half.
Filipe Luis gave away the penalty which decided the game, striking the ball with his left arm as he attempted to chest it down, and although Oblak dived the right way, Canales' spot-kick was too powerful and inflicted a first league defeat on Atletico since they lost at Celta Vigo on Sept 1.
Barca lead the standings on 50 points after 22 games, Atletico are second with 44 while third-placed Real Madrid, who play at home to Alaves later on Sunday and visit Atletico next week, have 39.

Alvaro Morata's debut ended in disappointment as Atletico Madrid missed a golden chance to cut the gap behind Barcelona by losing 1-0 to Real Betis in La Liga on Sunday. Morata made his first start for Atletico at Benito Villamarin but it was an unspectacular opener for the on-loan Chelsea striker, and a big opportunity squandered for his team.
