This is only the start for Reds: Klopp

MADRID • A first trophy in seven years for Liverpool, and a first win in seven finals for Jurgen Klopp.
The European Cup headed back to Anfield for the sixth time yesterday and their manager is confident there is much more to come, warning the rest of football's big boys that "this is still only the start".
A beaming Klopp revealed after Saturday's 2-0 Champions League final victory over Tottenham in Madrid that he had received a congratulatory phone call from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
Three weeks ago, the Reds were denied a first English league title in 29 years by City, despite losing just once and racking up 97 points - the most by a team finishing second.
However, winning the Champions League has made up for disappointment in the Premier League, with Klopp admitting it was "maybe the best night of my life".
The German told BT Sport: "I'm so happy for the boys, I'm so happy for my family, they suffer every year when we go to a final... they deserve it more than anybody.

  • No player has dribbled past Virgil van Dijk in his last 64 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions.

"Did you ever see a team like this, fighting with no fuel in the tank any more?" This is great for our development because it's always like we'd be doing good steps but people say, 'So what? You didn't win anything'.
"I'm interested really in development, but I get it, we have to win things and so it's really important that people don't ask now all the time about not winning things.
"Now we won something, and we will carry on, we want to win things, 100 per cent."
Of his brief exchange with Guardiola, he said: "We promised each other already that we will kick our butts next year again. We will go for everything (next season) and we'll see if we get something."

  • This is the sixth Champions League or European Cup won by Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp also ended his run of six straight Cup final defeats with Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.

It was a sentiment shared by Virgil van Dijk, who was named Man of the Match. The Dutch defender said: "Obviously, we want to challenge for every trophy if possibl`e.
"We have the squad for it, but you've also seen it this year, you still have to do it and, hopefully, we can challenge City again next season for the title because I don't think they will go anywhere, so we won't go anywhere either."
Liverpool's celebrations moved to their home city yesterday as tens of thousands of fans lined the streets ahead of the team's trophy parade, which began in the suburbs at around 4pm (11pm Singapore time) and worked its way towards the city centre.
The Hodgetts family - dad Mark, 47, son Shane and daughter Keira, 16 - were in place holding special edition flags.
"We wanted to get tickets for Madrid but, obviously, this is the next best thing," said Mark Hodgetts.
"We just wanted to feel the atmosphere. We've been waiting so long - my daughter was only two when we last won it."

Football: Atletico close gap on Barca with win over Celta

MADRID (REUTERS) - Atletico Madrid reduced the gap behind runaway La Liga leaders Barcelona to nine points by seeing off Celta Vigo 2-0 on Saturday (April 13) with goals from strikers Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata either side of halftime.
Barca beat Atletico in last week's top-of-the-table clash to close in on another La Liga title but the Catalans offered the merest chink of light to their pursuers when a largely second-string side drew 0-0 at bottom club Huesca earlier on Saturday.
Celta, hovering above the relegation zone and without top scorer and talisman Iago Aspas, also made things difficult for Diego Simeone's Atletico and forced goalkeeper Jan Oblak to make three impressive saves in the first half.
Atletico took the lead against the run of play in the 42nd minute thanks to an unstoppable free kick from Griezmann, who smashed the ball into the top corner past Celta keeper Ruben Blanco.
The France forward turned provider in the second half, playing an incisive pass up to strike partner Morata, who coolly rounded Blanco before hammering into an empty net in the 74th minute.
Barca lead the standings on 74 points while Atletico have 65 with six games remaining.

Football: Liverpool upbeat over Firmino's fitness to face Barcelona

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool are increasingly confident Roberto Firmino will be fit to face Barcelona at the Camp Nou in Wednesday's (May 1) first leg of their Champions League semi-final against the La Liga giants.
The Brazil forward missed Friday's 5-0 Premier League win over Huddersfield with a small muscle tear, but was still included in the 23-man squad selected by coach Jurgen Klopp and took part in team training on Tuesday before flying to Spain later in the day.
"We all knew from the beginning it would be a race," Klopp told Liverpool's website when commenting on Firmino's fitness.
"We don't have to make a decision today because there's no game today, we can wait.
"It looked good so far, but I have until tomorrow to make that decision," added the German, whose side are also battling Manchester City in a title race that looks destined to go to the wire.
Meanwhile Fabinho was passed fit after the midfielder missed the 5-0 thrashing of Huddersfield following a head injury sustained in the previous game against Cardiff.
"Every human being needs time and he needed that time, but if the Huddersfield game had been a day later he could have played," Klopp said.
Mohamed Salah also appeared to confound rumours of an injury scare by taking a full part in Tuesday's training session.

PARIS (AFP) - Neymar has paid a visit to Brazilian football legend Pele, who has been in hospital in Paris since April 3.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward posted a photo on his Instagram account on Monday (April 8) of himself alongside a smiling Pele in his hospital bed with the two holding hands.
A date for the 78-year-old's discharge has not been officially announced by the hospital which is based in the Paris suburbs.
The three-time World Cup winner was admitted to a hospital with a urinary tract infection last Wednesday, the day after appearing at a promotional event with France striker Kylian Mbappe.
Brazilian news website G1 reported that Pele had intended to come out of hospital on Saturday to return to Brazil but had been delayed by further tests and would stay under observation until he was 100 per cent.
The infection was not serious and was under control, according to members of Pele's entourage.
Pele's advisor told AFP on Sunday that he would spend one more night in hospital "as a precaution".

Football: Guardiola hopeful De Bruyne fit for crucial Liverpool clash

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Kevin de Bruyne could return from injury as Manchester City bid to inflict Liverpool's first Premier League defeat of the season and put pressure on them in the title race, City manager Pep Guardiola said on Wednesday (Jan 2).
The return of De Bruyne would boost City's hopes of beating Liverpool and reducing their lead at the top to four points.
It would also be a filip to their title defence which suffered a serious blow with three defeats in their last five league matches.
The 27-year-old Belgian midfielder, City's player of the year, has endured an injury-affected campaign, restricting him to just six league appearances.
He was out of action from August until late October with a knee injury, then suffered a calf problem in early November that sidelined him for more than a month.
Having returned again in mid-December, he suffered a muscle problem during the defeat at Leicester on Boxing Day.
Guardiola, though, is hopeful De Bruyne can feature on Thursday as City look to drag themselves back into the title race.
"He trained today," said Guardiola at his eve of match press conference.
"Tomorrow (Thursday), we need another check in the morning but he is much better."

'THE BEST TEAM IN EUROPE'

In contrast to City's indifferent recent league record Jurgen Klopp's side have won nine league matches in a row, and have the best defensive record, conceding eight goals in 20 matches this season.
During that nine-match winning run, Liverpool have kept six clean sheets and conceded just three goals, and Guardiola acknowledges his own team have to improve their defensive record, as well as becoming more ruthless in attack.

"You have to see how many chances we concede," said Guardiola.
"We are the second-best team in Europe in terms of the chances we create, so we are not precise enough.
"In the past few games, we have conceded more goals than usual but the number of chances we have conceded is not too much."
Guardiola has tried to play down suggestions defeat on Thursday would effectively end City's chances of retaining the title they won with a competition record of 100 points last May.
"The reality is clear. We are seven points down, but it is the second game of the second half of the season, so there are a lot of points to play for," said Guardiola.
"I have the feeling it is a big opportunity for us to reduce the gap.
"Everybody is asking what will happen if we lose but we are going to try to win.
"It is our chance to fight for the Premier League, to go as far as possible," added the 47-year-old Spaniard.
Liverpool have dropped just six points all season, and Guardiola believes they are currently the most consistent team in Europe.
"It is Liverpool, the best team in all England in history.
"We can beat them. I know today nobody trusts us but it is what it is.
"They are in the moment the best team in Europe, in their consistency, the way they control the details in their game."

Football: Impressive Lyon plunge Thierry Henry's Monaco deeper into crisis

PARIS (AFP) - Lyon dominated struggling Monaco from beginning to end on Sunday (Dec 16) to climb back into the Ligue 1 top three and bury Thierry Henry's side deeper in the relegation zone.
Lyon kept pace with Lille, who won 3-2 at Nimes earlier despite playing much of the match with 10 men.
Lille are three points ahead of Lyon, who have a game in hand, and five ahead of Montpellier, who did not play for a second consecutive week, and have played two fewer matches.
The French title race is all but over with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain 10 points clear, but a young Lille side are eyeing a return to the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2012, while Lyon, who squeaked into the last 16 in Europe in midweek, are seeking to ensure they will be back next year.
"This match was one of our most dominant performances in the league," said Lyon coach Bruno Genesio. "Even with superiority, we continued to play simply, to work for each other." Lyon took the lead in only the sixth minute with a goal by Houssem Aouar, his sixth of the season.
Nabil Fekir added the second in the 34th minute. Kenny Tete shrugged off a timid challenge to pull back a low cross which Fekir attacked while Monaco's Jemerson hesitated.
Monaco managed only one shot all game. They played almost the whole second half with 10 men after Aleksandr Golovin raked his studs down the back of Fekir's calf in the 47th minute and was sent off.
Ferland Mendy added a deserved third for Lyon just before the hour mark.
"The match in Kiev on Wednesday made us realise that we had a strong group," said Genesio. "And that we had to stop the childish attitudes that we have seen on some matches."
Monaco, the only team in the bottom half of the French league table to play this weekend, meekly wasted a chance to gain ground on their rivals.
"We have to look at the first goal we conceded and especially the second goal which summed up this game," Henry said. "Winning without desire is hard.
"We have to try to put this game behind us, we have a big game against Guingamp next week."
Earlier, in-form striker Nicolas Pepe scored what proved to be the winner as 10-man Lille won at Nimes.
"What a match, I'm really proud of my players," said Lille coach Christophe Galtier. "We must not forget that we played for more than an hour and 20 minutes with 10 men.
"With the added time, it was a very long and hard match physically." Portuguese teenager Rafael Leao headed Lille into a fourth-minute lead, but Galtier's men suffered a setback when former Southampton centre-back Jose Fonte was sent off in the 16th minute.
Jonathan Bamba's deflected effort doubled the advantage shortly before the interval, though, and Pepe appeared to have made the points safe midway through the second half with his 12th goal of the campaign.
"After the PSG strikers, Pepe and Bamba are the best," said Nimes coach Bernard Blaquart.
The 10 men finally started to tire late on, but Lille held on for victory despite Nimes goals from Rachid Alioui and Clement Depres.

Jorginho warming to Blues' tactics

Jorginho warming to Blues' tactics

LONDON • Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta insists the much-maligned Jorginho will eventually silence the critics because he is reaching peak form ahead of today's crucial Premier League home clash against Watford.
The Italy midfielder has endured a difficult first season after his ponderous displays made him a target for the club's frustrated fans.
Blues boss Maurizio Sarri brought Jorginho with him from Napoli in the close-season having identified Chelsea's midfield as a weak link.
He believed the player was the right man to help implement his tactical game plan after they worked together successfully in Serie A.
It has not turned out that way as Chelsea, with N'Golo Kante pushed out of his preferred defensive midfield role, struggled to adapt to "Sarri-ball", leading to criticism for both Jorginho and his manager.
But Azpilicueta pointed out the influential performance of Brazil-born Jorginho, 27, at Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday as proof of his importance.
Even when patched up due to a bandaged head wound, he was the key figure in their 1-1 draw in the Europa League semi-final first leg.
Azpilicueta said: "It was an important game for him. He grew into the game by getting more control, creating more space for the two attacking midfielders where he could find them in very dangerous positions.
"He can create that pass and move forward. It also meant we could enjoy more space in front of us."
Jorginho's performance gave the platform for fellow midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek to give one pf his best club displays, including the assist for Pedro's equaliser.
Now the Blues return to Premier League action as FA Cup finalists Watford visit Stamford Bridge.
Sarri's fourth-placed side are guaranteed to qualify for next season's Champions League via a top-four finish if they win beat Watford and Leicester in their last two games.
Chelsea, two points ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal (66), can also reach the Champions League by winning the Europa League.
Should the Gunners not win today at home to Brighton, the Blues will be assured of a top-four spot with a victory over Watford.
Following his impressive performance, Loftus-Cheek could be an important player in the tail end of the season but Sarri believes he should not overexert the player.
He said the 23-year old will never truly overcome the back problems that have frustrated his season and his senior career, and will always need to follow a personalised fitness and training programme to maximise his game time.
The midfielder, who has a curve in the spine in his lower back, has suffered muscular spasms since he was a teenager and, along with a specific training routine, has taken up yoga to manage the problem.
"I don't think he will need surgery," said Sarri. "But we have to control him.
"In the last month he has been able to train every day so, for us, it's really very important."
